On Japanese treatment of POWs. My father & 4 brothers fought in WW2. The only one of them to not live past 80, passing at 53, had been captured at Singapore. My father said of this, it was being starved as a POW but he went on to say that the Japanese lower ranks did not eat much better than the POWs. Logistics. In the West the Germans were best at tactics, the Allies best at strategy which includes logistics.

A great episode. Like you, I started my military interest making Airfix models and loved the BBC series World at War and the Great War. I was also lucky my parents had a bookshelf full of military and history books. Ever since I’ve been fascinated by military history especially 20th century. I’m still learning but am no expert, just reasonably knowledgeable. What conclusion I have come up with is that military warfare is full of ‘what ifs’ and luck. Arnhem is a good example of that. People in comment sections who claim they know best are only fooling themselves, the best we can do from history is to learn from it.

Mulberry Harbours "We found that the waves at the American harbour were significantly larger than those at the British Mulberry - although both experienced waves larger than they were designed to withstand. This goes a long way to explain why the American harbour failed whilst the British one narrowly survived. We also found that a storm of the severity of the 1944 storm would only be expected to occur during the summer once in every 40 years. The Allies were clearly very unlucky to experience a storm this severe only a couple of weeks after D-Day." University of Oxford The storm that struck the Mulberry Harbours page

It was the seabed too - firmer on Gold, softer on Omaha. Plus, the American engineers who built Mulberry A were less familiar with the tech

@@WW2TV Just FYI "Undismayed by the destruction of their artificial harbour, the Americans applied to the development of the Omaha and Utah anchorages their tremendous talent for invention and organization. In defiance of orthodox opinion they beached coasters (LST's) and unloaded them direct into Army lorries at low tide... during July the Americans here handled more than twice the tonnage which passed through the British Mulberry." Chester, Wilmot , The Struggle for Europe page 387 "At the end of the year, looking back on its experience over 'Mulberry', the Ministry of Supply had to report that 'a great deal of work which had to be carried out to meet these programmes was only found possible by the granting of a real overriding priority which was used in some cases ruthlessly'. The report goes on to say that, by any ordinary methods, the task could not have been met and the deliveries to arranged dates could not have been achieved. No wonder other production had to be sacrificed, even if the industrial effort as a whole as not in any way set back. The war-stores which suffered most were gun carriages, tanks, jerricans, steam-boilers, ammunition boxes, and, above all, Bailey bridges. At one time the making of the floating-bridge units for the piers represented as much as fifty percent of the total production of military bridging. In addition, the fabrication of the pier-heads led to some --283-- delay in ship construction and repair, although no interference in landing craft was permitted. That these losses did no harm is perhaps due to the healthy condition of British supplies and stocks on the even of D-day; that the losses were no greater is evidence of the efficiency and elasticity of British war production in the fifth year of war." Hyperwar From Pearl Harbor to victory in Europe II the ebb and flow of munitions "The cost of the Mulberry Harbour which was built for the use of the U.S. Forces will be estimated and included in our Reciprocal Aid records. The costs of developing and producing the Pluto undersea pipeline and the fog-dispelling device have not been included in these records, since they were used jointly by the British and American Forces. Where, however, expenditure in connection with the use of these devices clearly arises out of American requirements, such expenditure is charged as Reciprocal Aid." Hansard Lend-Lease And Reciprocal Aid 23 October 45

33:25 one great example of this was described by lt. Spalding. A machinegunner caused several casualties to his group as they ascended the bluffs on Omaha. Seconds later he threw up his hands and surrendered, he turned out to be Polish. The only reason they let him live was because Spalding wanted to question him. Everyone else was ready to shoot him immediately.

Great video again. As for OMG, i think it attracts so many discussions, is because it is a big (mad) operation. Which if succeeded would be such a bad ass achievement. As for the one who asked why the Germans kept fighting. You should ‘study’ the time between 1918/40. Those German boys had a hard time growing up with all the sanctions and hyperinflation period. Read: When money dies from Adam fergusson. And then there is the government(ns’dap) bringing you jobs and a future’. Raising a generation which went to school/h-jugend which got ‘indoctrinated’ into this believes.

ALL who served on the arctic and atlantic convoys on the allied side deserved decorating and a pension-I have no idea how the crews of the open cockpit swordfish put up with flying in the atrocious weather of the Atlantic and the Arctic-let alone risking their necks when they land on those tiny escort carriers-there were lots of accidents-the avenger and hellcats were too heavy for the early escort carriers.I wonder why it took so long to incorporate escort carriers into atlantic convoys and building an airfield on greenland and building the paltry 70 long range variant of the liberator-god rest their souls

Excellent show once again. I gave it some thought why MG is so triggering. There might be an element of nationalism to it. A famous podcast recently did a series on it and it gave me a really bad taste. I got the impression I was being fed a narrative that the Brits were heroes and Gavin and Americans are to blame. The story was constructed in such a way that everything south of Grave was left out or misrepresented, I was so disappointed. Tbh MG is the only operation I know civilian accounts of, so I don't know if other battles are misrepresented in the same way. Luckily you had Edwin Popken and his excellent presentation to counter that. But sadly celebrity status will often be believed over actual facts and those narratives are repeated.
