I lived in Naperville for 6 years. There ARE coyotes in the Chicago suburbs (and the south side of Naperville, especially). They are not that common, but people like this lady unfortunately are. This sort of thinking makes the parents blind to the dangers faced from indoors. Heroin has been a big problem in the high schools in Naperville for decades, unlike poorer suburbs nearby.

This woman is crazy... so many people want to wrap their children in bubble tape in order to "keep them safe" but what they fail to realize are 2 things: 1) this thought process has nothing to do with the child and everything to do with the parent. The parent needs therapy so they can learn to deal with their anxiety. Anxiety breeds a controlling personality a controlling personality destroys relationships. This is about HER, not the poor daughter. In the infamous words of Dr. Ian Malcolm... "life finds a way" and no matter how hard you grab onto the kids, you won't be able to protect them but instead will crush them. 2) When you attempt to control everything, you rob them of their childhood. We are only children for a very short period of our lives and it is a wonderful time. I grew up in a time where we rode in the back of pick-up trucks, went sledding down the middle of the street, road bikes without helmets, played hockey in the road until someone screamed "CAR", had sleepovers in a tent in the backyard, played in the woods ALL day building forts and such, had a BB gun at 10 years old, had acorn fights and used the trash can covers as shields, etc. These are things that would make this woman have a heart attack but they provided me with wonderful memories. Yes, I still bear the scar on my finger from taking off all of the skin while trying to cut a stick with my father's bow saw because I was trying to make a sling shot but I smile when I think about the fun I had doing it. Life is a risk and the some of the best things in life have high risk and being a child is a risk. Let kids be kids because soon enough they'll be adults and can never get that time back and I think that some of the best adjusted adults were the type of kid that thought they were a structural engineer when they were 8 and went through falling off a tree because they didn't have enough support on the floor of the fort they were building from recycled pallets :)
