It can be pushed around based on the current pace of the class, unplanned cancellations etc. it’s not dumb if for example, the class is running a week behind so is the same assignment still due on the original date or is that going to be pushed back? This is why "Us" College students don't like professors like her, because no question is a dumb question. Growing up my mother always told me that if you are unsure about anything to ask questions, then you all wonder why so many kids have trouble with asking questions & learning or being open around their peers in a learning environment .. that's why, because of professors like her. To ask your teacher a question and she acts that way about it puts a huge dent on the way you learn & it may make you feel embarrassed and for her to come on the show and cast that is rude, unjust & disrespectful .. she should lose her job straight like that .

I agree. By acting this way they're just shutting their students out. Once before an exam I asked a professor for clarification on some equation and all she said was "I can't believe you don't know this yet." And just walked away. She would just go through the motions but never actually teach. I've had another professor that on day one flat out told us he didn't care if we passed or not since he'd still get paid. Talk about disrespectful. I can't stand people like that. It's part of your job description so do your job.

Im blessed to have some awesome professors in college and hope i encounter more on my new classes. Yes we ask those questions but the way my professor respond to it is mature. He/ she would tell us its on the syllabus, plus he/she would tell us the date either way. However, i dont blame this professor for having issue with these types of questions. In life, getting a job is handing a pile of papers with DOs and DONTs. You gotta read that, practice that and get the job (for me based onmy experience). Buying for classes in college is like buying a car. The syllabus is like the instruction maunual in a car's glove department. Everything you need to know about the class is in the syllabus just like everything you need to know about the car is in that booklet.

As an educator she should know about differentiated learning or different processing styles. There are short term memory issues and executive functioning issues. As a person in power and role model by default, she should be aware of the emotional impact her response can have. You're supposed to create a safe environment for them. Yuck.
@JekaTheWolf6 жыл бұрын
Treava M exactly. I have anxiety and am always worried about if I have enough time. I have trouble keeping track of time also and have depression that causes some cognitive slowing (issues with memory, slowed speech/reactions, etc) I always feel the need to have my professor actually confirm it for me. Or if I tell them “this is how I understood your instructions ____; is that correct” For me I work better if I have that extra reassurance. Especially after having a bunch of professors who’d make changes last minute and wouldn’t bother to send out announcements about said changes.
@Ms-Jones6 жыл бұрын
In the “real” world bosses are not going to jump through those additional steps you’ll do it or have repercussions. If someone is having those issues as an educator at the collegiate level I would expect her to point that student to resources for help with organization or anxiety as appropriate. I would not expect her to tell them 3 times about the same assignment 🤷🏾♀️
@JekaTheWolf6 жыл бұрын
msjones2831 “you’ll do it or you’ll have repercussions” part of that is being able to do it on time. I don’t see how it’s such a huge inconvenience to ask a professor for a due date or clarification on what is supposed to be done. If I’m a boss or educator I’d rather work be done right in the beginning than for the deadline to come along only to receive something done wrong. I understand frustration with asking for extensions though; that’s unacceptable especially at the last minute and wouldn’t fly in a work place. But damn, I guess I’ll never get a job if I’ll be fired for being given an assignment and asking “when would you like this completed by?” Or “would you prefer I use this or that?” Edit: I just feel there’s two sides to this. All we have is her side; we have no idea how she runs her class, writes her syllabus, or gives instructions. Maybe the student is a bit slow or she could also just be horrible at explaining things, bad profs exist 🤷🏽♀️
@Ms-Jones6 жыл бұрын
JekaTheWolf I'm just saying in my job contract I need to have my reports done in 72hrs or risk info going in my professional file, being required to use my PTO to complete reports, or being terminated. At some point the responsibility is on us. Thanks be to God my middle school teachers taught me this, so by the time I got to college I understood this principle---cause someone was paying for me to know that. We can coddle children or empower them depends on what school of thought you follow. I deal with children/parents daily and when kids are in grade school and middle school I talk to parents about identifying these problems and addressing them. For example a kid with ADHD can take a pill to help with focus, but he or she has to utilize their planner to track assignments and test, there is no way around it. Plus in 2018-2019 instructors put these things on line so they don't have to have 50 students asking when an assignment is due. Then they can use office hours to actually help students who are struggling with a particular concept. Just my opinion and my experience. Life is sometime unkind so we have to be as prepared as possible. If extenuating circumstances occur I do hope and pray others will extend grace.

Educators that think any questions are dumb, do not need to be educators. I get it, sometimes people ask questions that should be obvious, but you're their teacher!!! You're literally there to help them and answer their questions. Her rate my professor points are about to go all the way down lol.
@prog31422 жыл бұрын
Exactly!! It’s teachers like this that make kids scared to ask questions and impede on their learning. Who? What? where? when? How? Why? Never be afraid to ask questions, because the ones who ask questions, never lose their way.

I'm a college student and I see no problems with this. All of my professors that I have had have very clear instructions. Here's the calendar where the assignments are due, so all I have to do is look at the calendar. If they say no extensions on homework assignments will be given, then I know my answer. It's as simple as that.

In 6th grade my teacher had a Staple's "that was easy" botton. Each time someone came up to her and asked a stupid question she would look at us stupid. Then she would tell us to think about what we said and if we answered back with common sence she would congratulate us then press the "that was easy" staple button.😂😂

I honestly don't see how asking for an extension is seen as "a dumb question." Nit everyone has rich parents who pay off their college debts so they have to work a ton and probably don't get time for homework, you should be thankful they're not cheating and are being true to you. If your concern is to teach them what the real world is like, then you'd give them an extension because they most likely will get one at their workplace.
@estheryema8 жыл бұрын
Dwyane Wade the thing is though in most colleges there's no extension on assignments. like sometimes it doesn't even matter the excuse. unless maybe you went to the hospital or something and have a note. Then again, since most assignments they give you a whole week or 2 to do it even that note might not excuse you based on the timeframe. So all of that to say she views it as dumb Bc we (college students) know there's no extensions on assignments but still ask. Not that I agree with it though cause As a college student myself, I would love extensions on certain assignment.
@reservoir_flow8 жыл бұрын
Dwyane Wade I'm honestly not sure what the standards and rulings are where you are, but in my university, unless you have a medical problem, they're very strict on extensions and make-up assignments. Even if there was a medical emergency, there has to be paperwork done by the doc and a form filled out and sent in before they even consider it. Of course, certain professors do it differently, as do programs and institutions, but the thing is that when they do, they have to give it to everyone, both in the interest of fairness and because it sets a precedent for everyone to base further discussions off. Tl;dr Most profs choose not to because it sets precedent and when they do, most give it to the whole class.

I don't remember how my freshman college teachers dealt with this, but throughout my other seven years at university the professors would generally refer students with these questions back to the syllabus. "When is the assignment due?" - "Check the syllabus." "Can I get an extension?" - "What does the syllabus say about extensions?" "What can I do to pass this class?" - "Follow the syllabus to the T." Steve is absolutely right. These are college students, they don't need coddled. They are adults and can be expected to act like one.

I work for a daycare and I have to answer ALL sort of questions. I would suggest she sits everyone down in the classroom ask them. She could say apparently no one knows where to find the next assignment, I would see if anyone knows where it is if they don’t she can show the WHOLE class 1 last time. Then from there on if some kids keeps asking her the same questions it’s now they’re responsible to accept the answer she gave them. I don’t know if she’ll like fail them or how far she takes it.

Answering the question would save you far more time than getting annoyed. Sure, tell them to check the syllabus next time, but not every student remembers the syllabus exists. Can admit I've forgotten it. Especially when professors put it online instead of handing it out anymore.

My cousin had one of her students to ask her a question " what page", with her being military kid , she doesn't mind telling them, her answer was," do I look like the index, look it up".
