Retire? Not necessarily. They can always move over to teaching in an apprenticeship program. That would extend their careers and transfer their much needed skills to a younger group of skilled tradesmen and tradeswomen.

I guess this is officially the beginning of the end for Ask This Old House. I am 32. When all the other kids were watching Barney and Big Bird I was watching the New Yankee Workshop and Ask this Old House on Saturday mornings. You guys are almost family. The show will not be the same, cant say I will continue watching with new cast members.

Nathan will obviously be a lead in the next few seasons. Slowly like the others. I love how they “rotate” new/real people in on This Old House. And this episode is full of KZbin content in 20 years. Haha.

:)...As someone that watched Tommy and Norm together back when Bob Villa was annoying everyone,And then did 30 years in the trades, It's so nice to see his son and to see what a good craftsman he is...His old man would have said he same thing back in the day; "Hey, it's swinging."... I remember when Tommy first came on the show and Norm was doing wood gutters, Tommy, scupped them out with a worm drive; Normy was cringing the whole time...:)...I guess Roger has been having some setbacks...SMH...I've seen these guys my whole career...You feel a kinship with them...I wish them all health and happiness.

In the door project with Nathan Gilbert, it feels like Tommy is suppressing some negative thoughts. Tom's in the same funk during the intro at 11:37 and the evaluation at 22:09 -- and both segments appear to have been filmed after the door project was completed.

While I would certainly be the first to say that a good quality tool is hard to beat, knowing which tool to use for the job and not misusing or abusing your tools to try to make up for a gap in capability is an extremely bad mistake. Trying to use a high-dollar wood chisel in place of a screwdriver is just begging for an accident. Between the choice of getting a single high-quality tool to start someone off and getting someone a mid-level SET of tools to begin their journey, the larger range of tools would likely be far better appreciated. Rather than have good tools that won't get the job done, you would at least be more likely to have the right tool on hand with the larger selection. Dont be afraid to gift multiple sets of tools! Having a small set on hand in the house saves many trips to the garage or shed, and having tools in the car can save you a big headache on the road. In addition, being able to loan out a small toolbox to a friend or neighbor is also good. A great idea might be to go down to your local Sears or other big-box stores and purchasing a set of hand tools in a case or toolbox. If they already have a good selection of hand tools on hand, you might like to upgrade with a set of power tools with matching batteries. Personally, I like the 20V MAX Matrix series from Black & Decker. I have the drill/driver, skill saw attachment, chainsaw, and cordless weed trimmer, all using the same battery packs. My next addition will be to get the jigsaw attachment. There are several great brand name companies out there with similar options available and in a reasonable price range, like Ryobi. Knowing your family members best also means you know their comfort level with their tools. Above all, try to stay within the bounds of reason. If they need saws for trimming branches, a band saw or miter saw is not going to help much, but a small battery powered chainsaw or some manual hedge shears or bypass loppers might do the trick.

Nathan is a talented worker. Isn't on the experience level as Tom just yet. However, as time goes forward, both This Old House and Ask This Old House will likely benefit from having Nathan and other new experts in the trades fill vacancies left by the original crew. We already see it happening with Jenn doing the landscaping segments after Roger retired. Nathan Gilbert isn't Tom Silva, but in the future Nathan could be the one giving projects to a new guy.
