🧐Frequently Asked Questions About Our Online Lessons:
Q❓: I have no experience with katana. Will I still be able to catch up?
A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons.
Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully give you instructions on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons, so you can watch what every other student has learned in the past. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback.
Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use?
A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō that is at least two blocks longer than the standard length.
The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training.
Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style?
A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all.
The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. To have the Sensei check your progress, you can send us a video of you practicing.

It’s not quite what happened with Mr 1 but the Lion song he beat him with is a on sword technique. Personally I’m thinking his final battle will not be with Mihawk, but with a significantly weaker swordsman (maybe the elder with a sword) and it will be a mirror of Zoro’s fight with Mihawk, just with Zoro using one sword saying they aren’t worthy of all 3. And then there will be an ironic echo of “scars on the back are a swordsman’s shame.)

Reminds me of Leckuchner's concept of being 'freely unbridled', where when you sword is tied up you drop it to grapple the opponent. Going from an unarmed attack/grapple into a dagger draw works pretty seamlessly from what we've experienced. The two sword style as the initial start into the shooting in and dagger draw just puts together several parts that all exist, very nice.

@@nickaschenbecker9882I've seen that video and honestly it kinda irritated me. As far as pure steel on steel, it's not a bad representation. But the saya is PART of the weapon, and not allowing its use is disingenuous to the weapon IMO. A saya can be used as an emergency offhand parrying tool, and the fact I never see it done is just... irksome. ;p

I’ve seen other sensei’s talk about it. It’s technically doable, but it’s not like the anime because it’s simply a drawing technique. The main way to make it work would be to pull the katana further out from your body, so you pull back on the sheath at the same time as drawing to quickly draw. I’d love to see Seki Sensei also demonstrate it!

There's another character besides Zoro who fights with 3 blades...in fact he was likely inspired by Zoro. In the game Tenchu: Kurenai (in the US it's Tenchu: Fatal Shadows) one of the bosses you fight is named Shinogi and he fights with two full sized katana and carries a smaller blade..looks like a short wakizashi or long tanto, in his mouth. The game came out quite a bit after One Piece... One Piece started it's run in Japan on July 22 in 1997...Tenchu Kurenai was released exactly 7 years later, as it came out in Japan on July 22 2004. It's pretty interesting to see the things inspired by fantasy and how they can be brought into reality.

Thank you for the video. It's scary to see how such things would look from a martial arts perspective. It's also impressive that Seki-sensei could come up with new katas in such a short time. Part of me envies japanese culture over how people could see a crest and knew just from that if they could trust someone or not. In germany it's not rare for the problems to be inside the group. Do japanese people even have sibling rivalry? Thank you for showing a more realistic perspective on something like this. Lots of love from europe

I know they did it to show the katas better or because the lack of practice in this new movements, but sometimes in the timeframe of letting the katanas fall or picking up the tantō the opponent could have hurt him or escaped from the grip. On paper this looks very neat and practical, but I would like to see a fast demonstration where the opponent is also resisting and reacting to the blocks and grabs while the third weapon is being drawn out because in a real fight, they would not be standing still while that happens. Of the three shown in the video, the third seems to be the most reliable method because you're actually controlling the opponent's movement and posture.
@SirConto
@SirConto Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Looks especially problematic in the second kata (3:16) .. It takes him almost a full second after grabbing the opponent's hands upwards to draw his tanto and stab. If in the moment he gets grabbed the opponent was to step back while moving the arms downwards (especially putting force into the shoulders), seki's grip wouldn't have enough of a leverage to hold it there. It's the leverage of the shoulder moving downward vs. the end of an extended arm. And it gets even worse when seki actually drops the hold with one arm to go draw the tanto. So as a result, the katana would come down on Seki's head, opponent could probably even do a pretty good draw cut over the head while retreating backwards. But even if the opponent doesn't quite intuit this on the spot, just by panicking from getting controlled like that, one would probably try to tear himself out of this hold as quickly as possible by pulling off backwards or to the side. Which would quickly move him out of that tanto's range. And that leaves the situation as a katana vs. tanto fight with some distance in between the two, and that's not a very favorable matchup for the tanto guy.
@Bl00dyfist
@Bl00dyfist Жыл бұрын
This demonstration was not practices therefore was not fluid. But everything shown is fleshed out and when practiced to be fluid would be fast enough, a main point was surprise where the opponent would have pause as to how to react.

Seki-sensei is always very impressive. Even when he moves so slowly that he can explain what he's doing, you just KNOW every gesture is masterfuly calculated. His muscle memory is out of this world, you can see it in the flow of his movement : no hesitation, no need for eye contact, and he can replicate over and over again with the same pace and precision. To the average viewer it's just show and tell, but this is mastery at another level.

Once again, thank you guys for putting this stuff out there. It is great to see passionate people doing this. Leaving a comment here for the algorithm. As always, however, it would be really good to see these being done in protective equipment against a resisting opponent. In some of demonstrations I have seen from this channel, it relies on the opponent being cooperative or using very poor distancing. I say this meaning no disrespect whatsoever 🙏 My reaction is that these techniques will be difficult to do unless various things are altered.

It's not as flashy and definitely different from what Zoro does but I personally think this method is still cool af in it's own right What's Seki Sensei is doing reminds me of tactics I saw when I tried to better myself in a fighting game, You try to confuse opponent or make him move in a way that gives you the window to attack, and that makes me realize that a fight is a fight, and it does not matter if it's in real world or on a computer screen there's always a resemblance (of course if the game itself is well made and gives you space to maneuver)

The 1st sets of moves are basic martial arts. What I mean is that they'll only work, if- and assuming your opponent is going for the 2-handed strike overhead, leaving their core exposed. You'd be royally screwed if they decided to go for a side ways swing or even upwards or a lunge. So there you are, having thrown all your weapons away- willingly- getting chopped to pieces. And on the 2nd set, why the hell would you throw away both of your katanas, if you already have a grip on your opponent and got him facing away from you? Just seems unnecessarily risky, when you could just NOT throw your weapons away and finish the fight there and there with your existing weapon on your free hand. Reminds me a lot of about many self defence classes and sports, actually. Lots of flashy moves, scenarios that require specific sets of elements to work, when you could, in fact, most of the time just kick them in the balls/crotch as hard as you can and run away fast.

i love how the fighting style that uses more weapons uses so much grappling; there's so much creativity in making such a weird prompt work.

I wonder what Seki Sensein has to say on Hiten Mitsurugi from Rurouni Kenshin. Great video. The martial logic and the fluidity is incredible.

pretty curious reversal of the style: Zoro's fighting style relies more on powerful slices, but the one that your master do here use trickery to deceive your opponent. nice remake!

How about Saito Hajime's "Gatotsu" move from Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin on which he grips the long sword only from the base of the tsuka with the left hand.

This makes me think of how fighting games actually take from martial arts in concept, as manipulating your opponent’s actions based on strategic rhythms. I love martial arts, samurai, one piece, and fighting games. Consider me a new fan!

Please give us more medieval/English/Norse weapons in his hands! The long sword video was great. I think he’d be really interested in the Viking axe. Maybe a halberd/pike?

Nothing is more distracting in a fight than signs of impending victory. Throwing your weapons away is certainly a bewildering move in a deadly fight. I feel like this would most effective against experts as they would be the first to capitalize on perceived weakness.

Reminds me of Star Wars Rebels where Ahsoka deliberately dropped her double lightsabers to confuse her opponent, and then grabbed the opponent's lightsaber hilt to disarm.

The way I would use 3 katanas is to have one of the katanas for the dual wield be specially made to be partially hollow and reinforced at the hilt, which would have a secret compartment for the short katana for surprise attacks. A strong metal wiring would also be within the sword. Ensuring that the extra blade actually isn't separated easily from the main sword, while also allowing chain combos to force your opening back, to fight at range, to weigh down his sword if caught in the chain so you can let go of that one (not play tug of war) and attack with the free one

While researching Noh drama, I found the principles of jo-ha-kyu (beginning-break-rapid). The reference I used stated this concept was applied to many thing, including budo. Does Asayama Ichiden Ryu use this historical concept as well? If so, how is it expressed in this Ryu? TIA

Its also interesting that using 3 katana can also just be used for multiple utility. If say you needed a backup or spare, you can store one on your back or back hip to redistribute weight. It would be a pain to keep maintenance though
