Great video - will be very useful to everyone when building sets. You also followed what I've personally done over the last year and I know can be useful for others to consider - and that is, take traditional lofted PW@46 to 4_iron@24 and remove an iron and stop the set at a 24 degree stronger 5 iron - all with bigger spacing. I spent 2 gapping sessions at TXG in Toronto with my Mizuno Combo set and came up with the following lofts (PW@47, 9@42, 8@37, 7@32, 6@28, 5@24, then to a 21degree hybrid) and it all gaps to 13 yards at my swing speed

Hi Paul, makes complete sense. Trying to ensure accurate gappings whilst having an increasing functional flight into greens as the clubs get longer is a recipe for better golf. Too many people still want to live in a matcho world and in the end they just punish themselves. Well done for doing it the right way 👍

Hi Jay, I have a set of Tom Wishon irons. The gap wedge to 8 iron are blades, the 7 and 6 are forged cavity and 5, 4 and 3 are hybrids. I think there are too many golfers who think that hybrids are not for them. With modern lofts we all need to re-evaluate our clubs. My first set of irons back in the 1980s had a pitching wedge at 48”. And my 3 iron was 23”. I still think of those Slazenger Irons fondly.

thanks. Really enjoyed that. It's helped decide I'm going Mizuno in my next fit. My objective is always to hang on to the best feel for as long as I can. That is, right to the point were there is a very clear performance advantage from the game improvement clubs.

Great video with blending becoming more available this was very good. Getting some fitters to buy into the idea can be challenging. I wanted a blended set of Srixon 565/765 a few years ago and let the fitter convince me to go all 565s. He thought it was just too much trouble adjusting lofts to blend. As a result of that I was having problems around the green wit the 565s being a little too hot and too chunky so I have been buying 765 heads off eBay to make the set work better for me replaced the PW, 9 and 8. The problem is how to decide where to blend when you can only hit one loft fitting irons. So glad you did this very informative.

Great video. I'm hoping to replace my whole bag this year (MP 18s, SC's, CLKs) and like "aggressive" blending. Looking at going the JPX route this time (getting older) but love my blades PW-8 so may go Tour in them, forged 7 and 6, and then.....whatever works best 😁
@AskGolfNut3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, the MP20 and Tour are so close that you could easily justify going the full hog anf having the 8 to PW in true MP20. The copper underlay introduced in the MP20 really brings the soft feel back that was lost a little in the MP18. Worth giving them a test 👍
@alfredthegreat95433 жыл бұрын
@@AskGolfNut I need that little bit of distance help tbh. My MP18SC 7 iron carries 140 yards, the JPX 919 7 iron was 158 yards and still with 7,500 spin. Will distance and gap test them.

Great vid on going to the extremes of the possibility of blending from different current sets of the same manufacturer which likes of Taylormade and Callaway seem to be going down the lines of as well. As you eluded to though this is extreme. Think for Mizuno you’d have to go Forged and Tour as a blended match and Hot metal and Hot metal Pro as a blended match. Looking at doing the latter over the next few weeks 👍

Just about to blend MP’s and HMB’s. See where the GCQuod numbers land possibly MP PW-7i blending to HMB 6i moving into 5i/5H (26*); 4H (22*) 3H (19*) to G410 5 wood knocked down 1.5* and set flat. Had previously blended Titelist 716 MB/CB.

I ordered the 921 Forged 4 to GW > 4,5,6,7 are made from Chromoly and 8,9,PW,GW are not made with Chromoly so there is already a blend in performance in the set of 921 Forged without mixing the set with other models 🤗 the Chromoly metal should help increase ball speed and the non Chromoly should give a more precise strike.

I got JPX 921 forged from pw to 5 iron at 24 deg - best clubs ever, but im going to get the 6 hybrid/25 deg to replace 5 Iron, 5 hybrid/22.5deg, 4 hybrid/20 deg. Might get my 24deg JPX 921 forged 5 iron bent to 22 or 23deg for windy days as a driving iron, but mostly play the hybrids
@AskGolfNut3 жыл бұрын
Definitely a good option to take, hybrids with roll and bulge and the Centre of Gravity being further back gives additional launch and forgiveness characteristics over the comparable iron. People shouldn't worry when they need to transition into hybrids as most golfers would benefit straight from just having more of them 👍

I just ordered the HMP 6-8iron, Forged 9-GW, thus far haven't blended the lofts...trackman data is indicating maybe 1/2 off the HMP 8iron, and add 1/2 to the Forged 9iron...but I'm going to final gap once I have them in hand.

One way to eliminate the gap between the 5iron and the 4 hybrid...drop the hybrid, add 1/4 -1/2 to the 5 iron, and potentially add a graphite shaft, same flex but 10gram lighter to the 5 iron. Your gaping would improve, and you would have flexibility around the 200 yard carry.

Awesome review. I’m a little late to the party but would be interested to see a review on the MP20 range. I have the MP20 HMBs from 4-PW and I hear they can blend with MMCs
@AskGolfNut3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry, better late than never 😊 They can be blended but just be aware that both are more helpful from differing parts of the face so necessarily don't just go by the fact that the lofts are close enough to blend but does your swing dynamics and more importantly your strike tendencies warrant them. 👍

Do blended sets cost more than a traditional set?
@AskGolfNut4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, they shouldn't. Each individual iron should be priced at a single divided by the normal group cost. For example a set of 4-7 Hot Metal Pro (4irons) and 8 - PW Forged (3irons) should work out total cost of HMP 7 irons divided by 7 multiplied by 4, and total cost for 7 irons in Forged divided by 7 multiplied by 3. Add both numbers together to give total cost. I know some places have used the more expensive irons as a singular price as a base cost for all 7 irons but in my opinion that's wrong and unnecessarily expensive for the consumer. Clubs are expensive enough so I don't see a reason to make them any more expensive by retailers using the excuse of set blending to make it even more so. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

I was thinking about doing this with my HMB’s and 921 Hot Metal pro’s. I wanna play my 5 HMB which is 25 degrees and order a HM pro 5 iron which is 22 degrees. Do you think it will gap enough. Or are HMB’s more explosive? I’m thinking no but interested in Golf nuts opinion.

@justinstephenson93604 жыл бұрын
Tried the ES21s and was not impressed with them, not even close to the feel and flexibility of my s18s. Like the concept of blended because whilst I think the 921 Tours are lovely (I wonder if the 919 Tours are available at a cheaper price?) the 5i is scarily small. Also tried the Mizuno 5w which was incredibly consistent and so easy to hit even in the cold. I even like the ST200 so I could have a complete bag of Mizuno's except for putter...not giving up my current putter. Back to the gapping results. In an ideal world I would weaken the 7i & 6i by a degree (maybe only 0.75 degree) and strengthen the fli-hi by a degree for close to perfect gapping

Lovely video, but isn't it complicated for the 'normal' Joe (myself included) to be able to test this set up. As amateur players often when getting fit for a new set, we only get to use 6 or 7 irons. So it is quite complex from my understanding to able to extrapolate at what club we (and I) would need to switch. Don't get me wrong I thought of this already and I'm already a big Hybrid user (got 3 in the bag) just so much easier to hit and go (P-6i in I210 to hybrid 26°/22°/19°)

Does bending a club after received from Mizuno to fix a gap negatively affect the integrity or performance of the club?

Great test! I got a full Mizuno bag, from driver (st180), 3+5 wood (EZ), JPX900 HM (5-LW). Have been really working on my gaps. Looking for an extra iron 4 in terms of length... with a hybrid/long iron replacement. Very good to know that those faces are that hot so a Fli Hi 4 would be far too much. Allmost went for a 4, so thanks for the extra tip there! Are these FliHi's still hybrid-useable from different lies?
@AskGolfNut3 жыл бұрын
The hybrid usability comes from the head design and large sole to body ratio, so the Fli His will be every bit as functional as a normal hybrid but with that little extra control from the shorter shaft. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

What do you think about 4,5,6 iron in 921 forged then 7,8,9,P in 921 tour? There’s a pretty decent gap in loft between 6 iron forged and 7 iron tour. Being forged how much play have you got with bending lofts and would you be altering too much with bounce etc?
@AskGolfNut3 жыл бұрын
Bounce numbers will be affected but not to the point where it will impact on turf interaction. Lofts can be bent about 2 degrees either side of standard. You have give or take 3 degrees to cover so I would suggest weakening the Forged by 2 degrees that will also reduce the offset and make them blend better with the Tour looks and then maybe strengthen the Tours by a degree, resulting in PW ending at 45 degrees which would then suit a 50, 55 and 60 T20 or ES21 depending on your strike pattern 👍

Hi Rick, unfortunately it's a purely business decision due to the left handed options sold each lifespan only just pay for the moulds and forging presses used to make them. I've had this conversation with many manufacturers over the years and the reasoning is always exactly the same. If there were more left handers to make it profitable then they would of course make all the range available. Still a shame for lefties and as a natural left Hander myself, I'm so glad that at a young age I switched to Rightie. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
