Would love to see a more complete galaxy with expanded source books, like a complete location guide (“systems and sectors” or “systems and star ports”). Or a complete faction guide with all different groups of good and bad guys ( “groups and gangs” ) something to break down the group by objectives, composition, structure, location, tactics and ideology.

I appreciated the video and the straight forward questions asked and answers provided where possible. One thing I am confused about though when speaking of the FFG / EDGE Star Wars RPG catalog being incomplete and whether or not we would see the books that have been produced but are currently out of print and specifically not even listed in the Asmodee store… Sam’s answer makes sense: Edge cannot produce a product that a handful of people [in the hundreds or thousands] have expressed interest in. That makes for a bad business decision. I understand this. Sam says not until the many many distributors chime in with orders for the book(s) in question, THEN and only then, will said books be produced and then shipped. OK. But how is the distributor to garner demand for a product that is not listed to him or to his gamer / consumer customer base….?? These “missing” Star Wars RPG books no longer appear as even “out of print” on the Asmodee store pages. Amazon…? Nah. If the current Star Wars RPG enthusiast wants these books - but has no way of learning of their very existence - how can they express “demand” to the distributors in question? And how can the distributors order these same books that they no longer have a listing for in any catalog…? Not a distributor of game books. Just a consumer with questions. 17:06 I really have the feeling things are going extremely slowly for EDGE. Disney has produced so much content for SW (some good, some bad) but at least increasing media presence for SW. A “The Mandalorian” themed beginner box a year or two ago could have had a lot of potential to get new players in the door but they probably missed the window due to the corporate shuffle and pandemic, unfortunately. Especially if they could have gotten it into big box stores like D&D or Battletech just recently.

Thank you very much for this video. Kind regards from Germany, where many people are waiting for some dice... By the way: there is right now no publisher who translates the Edge RPG system into German, but there is a big bunch of German roleplaying community who would apprechiate the coming of a German Edge Version. The Star Wars RPG had been published under twice publishers while it was still in FFG hands, but the long approval timespans were responsible that the companies gave up any engagements, because it was not profitable. Which is very sad. I am very glad, that both lines are still alive and that reprints will come also. But the very best news is about the dice to come again in a few months. Count in to send a few hundret sets to German vendors. ;-)

Great interview!!! Love Sam! I got to meet and work with him when he came down to Houston, TX, for a Con- we were demo-ing FFG games and he ran 2 or 3 Edge of the Empire games over the weekend. Over the weekend and late night dinners he told some great FFG & Star Wars tales. I was soooooo glad when he made the move from FFG to EDGE Studio. The FFG Star Wars RPG system is the best RPG out there in my opinion. I've played in regular games and one-shots since 2014. I love the system. I'm currently playing in a D&D 5e setting and it is just not as fun to me as narrative dice game in Star Wars. I got a Starter D&D set back in 1980 at the age of 10. I've play RPG and tabletop games since then... Games Workshop, Mech Warrior, ect- I found the range for Star Wars games from FFG in late 2013 and have loved all of them- Edge of the Empire, X-wing, Armada, Imperial Assault, Legion, Destiny, Shatterpoint, Outer Rim (awesome board game), and Rebellion (another great board game). The great thing about all the FFG games is that you can use the miniatures, scenery, ships, tokens, and other bits from all the games in the RPG at most and scale! We have also used some of the old WotC Star Wars miniatures. I hope there is a new or reprinted boxed starter set for the RPG. That's that best way to get into the game- I bought a set of dice, then started getting the boxed sets as I grew in the game. This is a great channel- keep up the great work! Everything i heard in this interview, which is a great interview BTW, is how bad of a decision it was for Asmodee to gut FFG by stripping the rpg division from FFG and moving all of it overseas to a publisher that cant get simple reprints done. FFG never had these problems with any RPGs and it doesn't make sense why Edge Studios wouldn't have the dice molds when they got everything ftom FFG. Even some of the same writers. If only Asmodee would move the RPGs back to FFG. All these problems would be takwn care of.

The SWRPG games can't be PDFs due to Lucasfilm LTD rules that date back to like the 80s or 90s unfortunately. I low-key am looking into making some dice to sell, swapping out symbols (for copyright reasons). Can't promise anything yet,. But yeah, they really need to get their dice back on the market asap.

Okay, haven't gotten very far, but I'm genuinely curious why reprinting existing books would require reapproval from LucasFilm? I mean, weren't the current material approved? They can't just sign some document to say 'yep, we didn't change anything, just a reprint'? Sam’s take is a good one and has been the same take he’s had since his time with FFG. They don’t openly talk about ANYTHING unless it’s been announced. A good example was Twilight Imperium: Embers of the Imperium. How long did we have to wait for it to be released? How much bad press did Edge Studio get for that? By not announcing something before it’s ready saves headaches if things go pear-shaped.

It's really a bummer because from the distributor's perspective it's probably not worth printing old sourcebooks. if you print 1000 books for a selling price of $30 to retailers, that's 30K without accounting for shipping and printing expenses. So either they are gonna have to charge a premium to reprint it or they need a huge demand for it.

Hey just found your channel. I've been playing with the SW Narrative system for years and I am curious on how to balance high XP characters. Even after GMing all these years my games kind of fall apart since it's pretty difficult to balance combat encounters during high XP play. An in depth guide on combat encounters or tips would be much appreciated.

I balance it with larger scale encounters. Extra minion groups or, if appropriate, mass combat checks where they describe what they're doing during that round, roll their skill for it, and then I use the results to modify the next mass combat check. I've run two campaigns that got over 1,000 xp.

Its not being rewritten, it's just under a new studio now (even though it's pretty much the same people), so they are reprinting under a new license. The only change to the rulebook is the logo from Fantasy Flight Games to EDGE Studio.

I got into RPGs about late seventies, I started playing the original Star wars RPG with a d6 system in mid-80s, then when wizards of the bought the license I got into playing Star wars in the d20 system and then they changed it up a bit with the saga Star wars saga game system. But after that I lost track of the Star wars systems find out about by another company and now I know it's by another company. Never played Twilight but I saw the movie it kicks ass.

I really like the concept of the core mechanic for this system, but running a Mandalorian Wars campaign for at least 6 months made me realise several things about it. For these reasons, I'm running WEG d6 or a 3rd party game like Star Adventurer or Scum & Villany when we pick up again in the Jedi Civil War: 1: The dice kind of suck. Obviously they're proprietary and unique to this system, which is bad, but it goes deeper. Superceding pass/fail is cool but there are other ways to do this and building and communicating dice pools to players takes way longer than just rolling a d20. Next time I play this system, I'm rolling all the dice. 2: There is WAY too much weird crunch attached to a mechanic that's so open-ended and floaty. The core mechanic is great for a game heavily focused on rulings, not rules, so it's a shame that the book runs counter to that spirit by being so dense. 3: The injury tables SUCK and it is way too hard to die, even with vicious. Getting crit should always be meaningful. I want Pillars of Eternity style lingering injuries, not minor annoyances that last 1 turn or 1 encounter. 4: Mass combat, or even combat with lots of different enemy types, is sloggish. I gave up on using the dice mechanic for NPCs attacking NPCs and just threw d20s. It immediately improved my game. This was a huge downside for Genesys as someone who likes wargaming and really enjoys SW Legion. 5: Healers are too strong. SteveIsBoard has my back on this and you've probably experienced it too. This massively amplifies issue #3. 6: Equipment modding, crafting, and the economy as a whole really turn me off. This was a problem on both sides of the screen. As a PC, I always felt like it was a huge hassle to buy or sell things and as a GM, these sorts of interactions were hands down my least favourite part of the game. 7: Space combat is just bad in SWRPG. It's overly difficult for players to visualise what's going on and understand their options. It's hard for the GM to understand everything going on, even with visual aids. In addition to this, weapon ranges don't have enough variance and certain things like shields don't work in an interesting or intuitive way. I can't speak on Genesys but getting space combat wrong in the space opera RPG is a huge minus. There are things I really liked and moments that were great, but I felt like I was fighting the system a lot. I'm not trying to be negative for the sake of it, but I think we owe it to our players to be critical of the systems we play every week.

I don’t think anyone expects Star Wars rpg to ever attain its proper growth while the source books remain three times what the other books are. By making the entry level stupid high one generally guarantees horrid growth. We need to know when starter kits for $35 will be available.

I mean for 50 bucks you get a lot in the core rulebook. It's like a DM and PC Handbook, Monster Manual and pre-made adventure wrapped into one book for 50 bucks. Dice availability is the biggest thing holding back the game right now imo

The good thing with the beginner boxes was that you got all the stuff you need to run one or two adventures - including dice. The problem with Star Wars and Genesys both is they rely on proprietary dice to work. Yes there is the app, but most people want the actual dice.

Bullshit answer regarding dice, dice are cheap and not difficult to make, Indy 3rd party people are doing it faster

Well when you have to order thousands and thousands of proprietary dice, its a bit harder than an indy 3rd party or etsy shop just printing some dice.

You also have issues with the fact they’re PROPRIETARY DICE! Sure other people can make it, but I would imagine Edge Studio want to do right by their licensors. Sure, they could probably make the dice without their consent, but that might just piss off LFL enough to pull their license or just make things difficult for Edge to produce content. That’s something the secondary or ETSY market doesn’t have to deal with. They don’t have to maintain a relationship with LFL. Edge Studio does.
