Yes and no. In general yes, but on the other hand it is here a rather protected space at university. In everyday's life it might be tougher.

I think this is a good idea to better understand "the other side." I understand it may be a little scary to be in front of class but at times I felt that the young ladies may not have clearly understood the questions being asked? I would like to make some additional clarifications. The reason why Muslim women cover is simple: because God commanded it in the Quran, which is sent as a guide for all mankind. Same reason for not eating pork or drinking alcohol. The "whys" could be extended to modesty for hijab. Another part to this is the Quran says "there is no compulsion in religion/faith." So when a woman makes the decision to cover or not, it must be her choice. And God knows best.

I have a completely different perspective on the hijab now. The modesty explanation at the end made a lot of sense. It makes me wonder if Western women feel a lot of pressure about “being on display”. It would appear there is pressure but also prideful vanity at play. It makes sense that covering yourself for modesty removes not only the pressure, allowing you to be more naturally yourself but also the sin of pride and the bravado and hubris that goes along with that pride. I learned something valuable from this video, thanks for posting it.

No, it does not make sense except you suppose morality depends on such random thing as clothing. But as clothing styles strongly depend on culture, profession, climate etc., it is obvious that concluding from clothing to morality is highly questionable and arbitrary and illiberal.

We had a nice lady who wore a Hijab at my apartment, and I asked her if she ever got hot in it. She was really nice and we had a talk about it. Her Hajab was a gift from Kuwait so it was made with really cool and breathable fabric, but yes, she did get hot as the room she was in did not have AC. Both of us were also suffering from Hot Flashes at that time in our lives and we laughed about how the only thing that would cool us down was cool showers. It was nice to speak with her about it.

I'll tell you about the history of the hijab, which covered women's bodies to keep them modest and existed in earlier civilizations. The slaves and whores couldn't wear this in the former times so assuming that you think about essentially entire western dressed ladies are either slaves or whores in those days. It was available in all abrahamic religions and, surprisingly, in Hinduism. It's unobtrusive and concentrates on says it gives regard to the ladies from the male partner. And please explain to me the response that you discovered during your research.

My dad's family fled from Pakistan during the Partition of India in 1947 and moved to India. We are Sikhs, and when Pakistan was created to be a Muslim majority country, several of my family members were killed for refusing to convert. Thankfully, many of them got out safely and arrived in India. I think it is really sad when religion divides us, and I found it interesting that the girl from Pakistan did not meet anybody of a different faith until she came to the States. I am an Indian Swede, but my mum and dad grew up in India. India is a secular nation, and my parents grew up in communities with Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Jain, and Muslim families.

India with all the religions there wouldn't survive all these centries if Rilgion was dividing it .. I'm a Muslim btw and we've great relations here in the UK with our fellow Sikhs.. we do share a lot in common too.

We wear it for god, because god asked us to wear it. This is our belief. If god would’ve said we should not wear it then we wouldn’t have. We believe that god knows the best. If god told us to wear it then it’s for our own good and I personally see the many advantages. I chose to wear it even tho my country doesn’t tolerate me wearing it.

@@valfem because women’s hair is attractive to the opposite gender. You can see it everywhere in commercials and movies. And also in music, the way male artists describe how beautiful her hair is etc. It’s a gift from god. And for modesty you’d also wear sth if you’d be bald (it’s overall modesty, not only hair)

I find it incredibly interesting that the one who believes it is a choice would wear it whether it was required or not, and the one who feels it is required would rather not wear it, to me. It's suggests that it is a requirement and one can simply trick themselves in a way into believing the mandate is a good thing

Interesting conclusion there. I think this is the case sometimes but hijabs have always been interesting in Islam because as far as I know- there is no reference to them in the Quran itself. And this is where Islam is unique in that the culture and religion are so intertwined that you sometimes can’t tell the two apart. Some women in my family don’t wear hijabs and some do, I was raised to believe it is a choice, but not everyone is.

This was great! I am not religious. I love Jesus, but I'm not a Christian. I cover my head with a hat or a scarf when I'm in public. It's for modesty and spiritual protection. I felt led by God to do it, and I love it. I think it's a personal decision, and I implore anyone on a spiritual path to study it and consider the benefits. Modesty removes unwanted advances for the most part. People tend to show more respect when I cover. Thanks for sharing this. ❤

I think when she said that she feels safe being covered, I believe she means not sexualized because from my understanding that’s why it’s a requirement upon other things. Not to tempt men even though men don’t need some radicalized “green light.” Because men are aggressive and violent by nature.

These Muslim women couldnt explain it the way they should... Hijab is not just for modesty because you could be modest without being covered up from head to toe.. likewise the prohibition of eating Pork , its not because of any health reasons even if we could find some scientific medical explanations .. the main reason is God has made it obligatory to Muslims , whatever the reason, is beyond our knowledge .. an act of Obeying God gives Peace in our heart.. ❤

Hello , it seems that you are a Muslim ? With all due respect but how does a woman covering up from head to toe or just the head indicate that it is protecting you because as far as I’m concerned, you can still sin with your mind and have unclean thoughts and that’s not even included your heart condition and where it’s at. Modesty is not a headscarf it is something that comes from within… it’s a behavior. The outward appearance means nothing if your heart is not where it needs to be.

You have to understand that islam is submiting your will to the creator, whatever he tells you to do, you do it with surtenty that Allah knows you beter than yourself, so you trust him.. Hijab is obligatory and you can still sin whether you're a hijabi or not, but hijabi has more reward than the non hijabi.. And it's a fact.

It is always weird to hear that god commanded this as there are a dozen or so religions that believe in the same God and do not believe God decreed this. Not a criticism but I wonder if your comment could say something like " We Believe God......

The former can be accepted, the latter is proven not to work at all. Countries where women cover are not safer for women. That depends on other things. For example is rape a bigger issue in Afghanistan than in all Europe and in many Middle East countries more than in Europe and US or the rate of women killed differs strongly between countries with similar tradition in terms of clothing.

If women had created the 7th century rules regarding modesty, the rules would have likely required men to avert their eyes, not women covering up from head to toe(in a desert). Imagine a religious court that prosecuted men for not looking down when passing a women on the street as opposed to the current rules where women are punished for not blanketing themselves to keep the sexually infantile men from ogling them. We have to call out bad ideas, even really old bad ideas.

@@Siwahib There’s nothing equal about it. Nothing in Islam requires a man to cover his entire head and leave only his face (or eyes) showing, in contrast to the requirements for women. Modesty for men still allows men to go shirtless and wear short pants- only the body parts from a man’s navel to the knee must be covered. Shoulders, chest, stomach, face, neck, knees, ankles, feet and head can all be uncovered- makes for a very easy day at the public beach. Women, not so much.

They are only different in the sense that the rules that were adopted from Bronze Age dessert dwelling tribal cultures, treat them differently.
