In this video I show you how to sign the words NEED, REQUIRE and REQUEST.
I also include options for "must" and "should."
The sign for "request" has a few existing variations. I show the option that I use. You may also see this sign initialized with the letter "R" replacing the index finger.

Also on another video the sign for AGAIN can also be done with the closed five HS, palm orientation facing to the side the same way as when you sign REQUIRE.

Have you noticed KZbin has very few videos involving actual ASL conversations? I would love to see you post some videos (five to fifteen minutes) of you having a basic conversation with an ASL partner. Learning words is nice, but it might be even better to grasp the flow of how people actually speak.
@ASLLOVE

Very good point. I know it would be useful for people to observe a signed conversation in action but the video concept could prove to be a challenge. I will consider it and research it a bit. Thanks for the idea!

Hi! Would the sign for “need” also be used to say “had’? As in, I had to go to the store. Not as in you had something.
@ASLLOVE
@ASLLOVE Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I would sign “need”. You wouldn’t sign “had” or “have.” Must could also be used to show urgency or immediate need. Maybe you are out of food, Food - store - must!

NEED/SHOULD is done with a double movement and what you signed is MUST.
@ASLLOVE
@ASLLOVE Жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for checking out my page! I most commonly see NEED/MUST signed using a single movement with your facial expression and quickness of the movement determining the meaning. I prefer to use a double movement for SHOULD. I equate it with nodding your head yes - as in "yes, you should." Often times ASL is not that cut and dry in which a single movement means one word and a double movement means another (of course there are exceptions such as noun/verb pairs, etc.). More often than not, you will see a variety of options for a single word. Here are just a few examples of NEED using a single movement: asluniversity.com/asl101/pages-signs/n/need.htm. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoaQf4Bqn9Olask

@@ASLLOVE It must be a regional way of doing it then. I'm a native signer (over 50 years) and have never seen the singular movement used for NEED/SHOULD. I've only ever seen it used as MUST. A command, not a suggestion. If you look at what he states "The faster, "harsher," and more exaggerated you do this sign, the more of a "requirement" exists to "do something." If you do this sign with a "single, strong movement" must, have-to, "not much choice in the matter." If you use a double motion it means --> need as in: ought-to, should, "some choice in the matter." (This is more of a suggestion therefore using a double motion to indicate NEED/SHOULD). MUST/HAVE-TO with a singular movement is more of a command and you don't really have a choice. A much stronger meaning, vs NEED/SHOULD with a double movement and is more of a suggestion. Bill points this out in his comment up above.

@@ASLLOVE My friend who is trying to teach her husband signs as he recently lost his hearing, send me your video asking if these were correct, which of course I told her they were with the exception of the sign for NEED/SHOULD. I taught her girls when they were younger some sign and she's learned the hard way that just because people make video's saying it's ASL or even just sign language, doesn't necessarily make it true. Unfortunately there are far too many teachers who are having their ASL 1-2 students post final's on KZbin. Anyway, she will send me video's to double check or contact me asking for suggestions. I send Bill Vickars site and video's to her often along with a few others. Yours is one of those I will possibly be referring friends and prior students to. I need to watch a few more first though.

@@MusicInMotion_67 I completely understand the complications that can arise while learning ASL (especially online). It must be confusing for those who are learning and frustrating for those who already know. I appreciate your passion for the language. My goal has always been to inform, not to confuse. In many of my videos I try to show options or possible variations (regional too) so that people can be aware of the possibilities they may come across while studying.
