They need to look at bc and wotlk, and start reverting as much as possible to that model. More sand box, less boundaries and hand holding systems and more fullfilling long term goals.

They need to look at vanilla. BC and Wrath worked so well because the core was still vanilla; the progression was the same, the talent trees were the same (just expanded), the gameplay was the same. What BC and Wrath got right was that they were *content* expansions, not game overhauls. The moment Cataclysm hit, WoW's expansions started redesigning the base game; retroactively changing progression. It seems strange, now that I really think about it - but that is the real crux of what Blizzard started getting wrong. With BC and Wrath, the expansions... expanded the game. They took what was already there, and added to it. With everything after Cataclysm, retroactive changes and core design changes meant that older content was actually being destroyed; they weren't expansions anymore. ST's a perfect example of this - they literally went back, and REMOVED dungeon content.

If you want to fix the reward system its pretty simple: revert it back to the way it used to be in vanilla and BC.

i myself stopped playing 2 weeks ago. sad to say that my high warlord isnt slaying anymore, cant stand the rewards

I stopped in MoP because my computer broke and I didn't get a new one until a couple months before BFA. throughout that entire time I've been thinking about wanting to play WoW again, I missed everything about it so much. I also stopped playing 2 weeks ago, literally the only fun thing to do is PvP with friends... That's it.. and the rewards I keep getting are just downgrades so I have no motivation to play at all. I stopped playing BFA to play Football Manager 2018.. that's how I know there's a problem with WoW

2 x 370 gear rewards from emissaries this week. I could barely bother to do 1. Yea, it was an upgrade.. the problem is.. who cares? What difference does it make? So i can wash myself in impulsive remembrance of what that feeling used to be. What those upgrades used to bring. There was always a goal ahead, something you were driving towards. I feel like we have to be all too creative to entertain ourselves in this game. Too much has been stripped away.

I don’t think cosmetic rewards is enough. It’s just not the same thing as rating requirements for pvp gear and attunments

It's not just more innovative ways to progress your characters visually. Most important to this concept, is the path to acquire them. When you saw someone with (input w/e rare awesome item) in vanilla, the visual component pulls you in. Acquiring the knowledge of how to earn it makes you respect it that much more because of the time investment necessary to earn it. This everyone wins mentality that has been transmitted like a virus into video games from western culture is killing video games as we know them.
