Let me summarize D4 versus PoE2 succinctly: One feels like a weird action MMORPG while the other feels like... Diablo 2 with A LOT of new bells and whistles. Want an example of that MMO feel? I can't tell you how disappointed I was while playing D4 for the first time when tremendous creatures just crawled out of the ground. I felt like I was in a simulation box -- totally breaking my immersion. What about PoE2? Well, you enter a stage. There are creatures there. Creatures run from off screen much like how it happens in real life if it were to happen. The small details like that separate a low quality game from a great one. So many other things I could mention too like how the random terrain that takes on dozens of actually different environments versus D4 where everything is a cave or a dungeon in a medieval castle. I think D2 had more environment variety than D4... To sum: PoE2 feels like I'm a hero journeying through a real world whereas D4 feels like ctr + copy pasted zones where I keep entering simulation boxes. A few different types at least! To guess at the cause: Everyone working at Blizzard was working a soulless corporate job. Clock in, clock out. Remember that faithful day when some D4 devs showcased some kind of feature -- I think coop or controller support? Everyone who likes ARPGs spotted a nonsensical build. Their devs, THE ONES CHOSEN TO SHOWCASE A FEATURE, clearly hadn't even put a dozen hours into the game. GGG is renown for having actual gamers leading things and making things. Not all need to be that way, but it helps. Director of Diablo Franchise = I could never see him turning on a PS5 to chill willingly... or even to check out competition. He rules by entering his office and reading a stack of reports from experts and designers. A non-gamer making the final call on a game. Director of PoE2? He's been playing early builds of PoE2. He said his last game played was that Prince of Persia game. The dude can make a better gamer product by being a dang gamer. Who would have thought? Feature after feature in PoE2: "Wow, they aren't listening to us, because they did it before we even spoke about it!" Feature after feature in D4: "Yeah, we did all this stuff because our psychologist did a study where if you get a gamer invested up to 80 hours, no matter the quality, they come back season after season, buying skins! Release D4 NOW to get the money coming in. Lilith statues? OF COURSE put that in. It'll add 6 hours to time played. Redo all renown? Yup, that was the original design. Ferguson: "OKAY, we will transfer some renown, but you'll have to redo the side quests. I THINK THEY'RE FUN!" (aka "man, we have very little content, but we need to pump up hours played since the psychologist said so.) What happened? Such pushback that the programmers had to hack in a renown transfer system last minute. The programmers DID their job: They created code where renown does not transfer over, because obviously, non-gamer higher ups REQUESTED a complete redo. It was part of their corporate plan. Big push back? Oh, we can't go that far. Just slap a quick patch on that transfers renown. We got called out. Errr, yeah I see you might have to make a character, log into your old character, relog into your new character or whatever... yeah, that shows the programmers were hit out of left field with that feature request. What does it all mean? Ferguson wanted us to replay those lousy side quests that all felt like 1 of 3 types. HE thought that would pump up hours played and consequently pump up skins bought. But if he had just even the tiniest interest in gaming, he'd know how much those side quests stunk. He'd have ordered the programmers to implement a renown transfer system. I could go on for 10+ paragraphs. And work on it like it's an article for a few days, condensing it all down into a coherent message that PoE2 > D4. But if you read this, you got my stream of thoughts. Hopefully, they made sense. Thank you for reading.
@snowanddeathАй бұрын
The concern is that in Poe 1 there was a definite progression from the start being very weak and the endgame being a zoomy ball and lighting spewing nightmare killing 50 enemies at once. By the current endgame, which is like after half of the planned campaign to be fair, you still feel just as vulnerable as at level 5. That said, it's a good cross between souls and Diablo 2, but I can't really imagine playing this for countless runs like Poe 1
@AG-ld6rvАй бұрын
@@snowanddeath Yeah, IIRC, the director said he intends for the gameplay to be more cerebral, meaning tactical thinking and timely spell casts and good dodges. I believe that sense of feeling vulnerable will be part of PoE2 for better or for worse. I haven't gotten through the endgame, but I assume you MUST keep juicing up your challenge level if you intend to progress your gear. Or is it like Diablo 2 where you can kill a random, threatless creature and get a Ber rune? I suppose if you prefer feeling strong, you can farm in lesser challenges IF it comes with some chance of gear progression. That progression is a must though as the main reason people pump hours in is to find sweet gear. Well, that or to reach max level. At any rate, I think most people will be dealing with that feeling of vulnerability, because farming the greatest challenges for the best chances of getting great gear.

The punishment mechanics on removing rewards from maps feels just as bad as depleting keys in retail wow, it adds nothing of value to the game and just makes people want to avoid the content in the end. I despised the end game map system in POE1 and it's ultimately why I stopped playing because I refused to farm 25 maps for a shot at boss that might 1 shot me from off screen and that was my only shot. If the content is hard enough and takes time to reach and you lose exp for failure, that alone is punishment if your character is too weak to pull off the win (talking about hundreds of accumulated hours)
@Proxi_ExАй бұрын
One thing that still was confusing to me as a new poe player was the quests. It doesn't clearly portray on the side of your screen which quest is for the zone you are in for example (found myself going to the map all the time to check which quest was for where I'm at). Quests for current zone should be highlighted or segmented from the rest of your quests. Next thing sometimes zones get highlighted as a zone which has a quest, but you actually only need to find the next zone in this current zone which then has the quest. Cmon just show me the zone which has the quest objective on the map in grey or something, instead of making it confusing like that. And the last thing is finding the quest in a zone, which can take literal ages if you path around it. Maps are huge and I would love to get like a directional indicatar after set amount of time spent in the zone to hint where I should go.

Having the mobs respawn on death combined with the lack of fast travel and minimal checkpoints makes it such a chore to explore. I actually liked the map design and mount travel system in D4 better. At the beginning you have exactly 2 options and afterwards you just go with the skills that match your playstyle. Worked just fine. The overview for the passive tree just looks so bad, but it really isn't, because for a normal build you only have to consider like 1/8 of it anyway. The search function is awesome as well: You need damage -> search for the 2 closest damage notes and decide which way makes more sense

42:00 Easiest fix would be a middle ground solution; set a specific number of attempts per map before the modifiers/bosses are removed. Limits cheese to maybe 2-3 times, and lets players decide if they are ready to try again, or farm up on another map before retry. Only loss to player is time on failed run, but benefits all players, even if there may be cheese. If you want to clear, you can come back later without feeling like you lost an opportunity. Edit: They could also add modifiers that grant extra retries as something to farm for if you're finding maps hard, or trying to re-spec. Edit 2: They could even make it something like a trinket you keep in your inventory that gets consumed on death, but keeps map from resetting.

To everyone complaining about rarity of orbs, there is an easy solution: Go and run the Mausoleum of the Praetor a few times. If you are higher level, you can breeze through it in a couple minutes, and collect a few rare items to disenchant. Do it a few times every day, and you’ll be swimming in orbs, and you get some decent coin too.

I got the same issue in regards on the exalted orb. One way to do it as well is to get an exalted orb when dismantling rare gears with 5 or more affixes instead of getting and 2 regal shards. That way it allows the players to get more orbs when changing gears and dismantling the old ones they have. It also acts as a rebate for crafting bad gears. And lastly makes the player feel nice when getting a rare drop even when its not suited for their build.
@joeblocher4946Ай бұрын
The drop issue is real. I didn't understand what people were saying about how to craft items largely because 20 hours in I have about 3 exalted orbs and 0 regal orbs so I thought the intention was that you had to go straight from a white item to yellow.

But if you've never engaged the league mechanic on the map, it shouldn't go away when you're killed.

Something people aren't talking about: Multiplayer scaling I've been playing multiplayer with my brother (I'm a witch and he's a mercenary), and the multiplayer scaling seems wrong. Fought a boss and it had a ridiculous health pool, took us many tries to kill the boss, we kept dying due to running out of potions because the fights were dragging on too long. I then decided to fight the same boss solo, and i killed it pretty quickly. So i looked online, and i found one post mentioning this as well. The post said something like, he was checking the numbers and it seems like the game is sometimes defaulting to 6 man party size scaling. Because even white mobs were taking a while to kill on multiplayer.

Honestly if all the revered games dropped today they would be mid, what made them so amazing is discovery. Watching a yt video and copying builds and looking up all the secrets a game has to offers just puts you in a state where you are just walking on a dotted line performing chores to get to an end result. With the state of everything you are at a massive disadvantage if you dont so everyone does and thus metas are born.

For sure, but for a new player to this game they will never make a strong build first time, due to the complex skill tree, weird abilities that aren't easy to understand, and lack of rare drops in single player (only one or two new rare items each level, good luck getting the rolls you need for your particular build). So most new players will look up youtube builds to do well

One good fix to the end game map problem would be to make it so all the rares are marked on the map overlay. That way they dont need to make them smaller as that would likely take more resources than to just make them appear on the map. This imo would fix 2 issues in one. Like asmon said you could have that 1 last one somewhere hiding in a corner that you never find cause you walked past him 7 times in the last hour. Having him marked would fix this and make the maps seem less huge as you have known POI marked for convenience.

53:38 i think Una should give you the quest to craft after unlocking the hooded one since she deals with disenchating, its early enough that new players would have obtained a bit of currency and maybe would've disenchanted some items. Or maybe after the first few quests when you first get to clearfell encampment she gives you the quest to make a magic item and how to disenchant and either after unlocking the hooded one or getting him out of the tree and during his recovery state you could do the crafting to rare item. And upon the completion of the first stage you get a regal and on the second stage you get a exalt or at the end of both stages you get a stack of 3 regals
@CosmicDeejayАй бұрын
I think the solution to the crafting problem is to have different versions of each currency that can be used on specific item level ranges (similar to map tiers). It would be more confusing than the current system, but it would allow for a huge boost in droprates for relevant currency (such as orb of anuulment). I'm not sure if there's any problem with this system I'm overlooking but theoretically this would allow you to craft your gear throughout the entire game without ruining the economy. Of course this only works if item level is very predictive of an items stats, but I'm pretty sure there are very few exceptions for this rule (maybe rings/amulets/belts/jewels can only be crafted with mid to high tier currency).

I imagine GGG where influenced by this system (FFX released in 2001). Who ever in Square decided to put that system in there deserves so damn much credit. Okay, so, you're playing Sonic 1, imagine having +70% chance to evade and spec into a node called "...and Protect me From Harm."? You could clear most games in most genres at that point, no?(pls do not nerf). So Poe2 needs to be tougher. I got my 7th and 8th ascendancy point the other day, the game is really hard. Highlight of my PoE2 experience is killing electrical construct boss in the temple in Act3 with negative lightning resists on 1st try, just being able to watch attack patterns and utikise dodge button. The negative highlight of my PoE2 experience is general itemisation - it's literally worthless to use "crafting (lol)" currency and by the end of act 3 I've had to just go back to beginning, to the pre-town location and farm guaranteed rares and unique enemies for Exalts because it was utterly impossible to progress in last section of Act3 with Act1 crossbow with no upgrades cropping up at any point from any source whatsoever. I've lucked out on a crossbow for lvl33 with 215physical dps and extra grenade implicit for 6ex after trying to grab one on trade site for 2 days straight. Even if I did hypothetically grabbed tons more currency, using it wouldn't be feasible either because desirable bases just do not drop. I've had grant total of 7 bombard crossbows dropping until the middle of act4, between raw drops, magic items that didn't come with literal garbage mods AND vendors after each lvl up. There are no scouring (please don't, they would be unnecessarily rare for no reason whatsoever too) and there is no way to wipe item clean and start anew, as there are no alts either. It's completely incomprehensible the layering of bottlenecks that work against everything that they've claimed in reveals. It's the worst kind of gamba, worse than Korean MMO grinders. Gear dropping is just garbage vendor fodder. And for the record I do identify ALL blue and yellow items. Regals are too rare, the options range is too wide - it's PoE1 2012 experience, literally the worst iteration of PoE crafting thorough the entirety of the franchise. You get few Exalted orbs and Regals thorough the entirety of the campaign unless you just grind location with rare/unique enemy close to waypoint/entrance for quick resets and even them, to craft a crossbow that I've bought on trade would take me anywhere between 1 and 10 000 (!!!!) attempts. TL;DR: giving currency to gamba addicts is better than using currency yourself. No good drops that would enable progression. Dodge doing HEAVY lifting so at least you can bypass most gear checks by timing your dodges right, no solutions to zero dps other than playing broken skills, that they will nerf in 2 to 5 business days 🙃

Regarding your comment about punishment vs rewards and why investment is bad, the way I like to think about it is "Rewards should be gated, access to the reward should not be". This was my biggest problem with PoE 1. For example, Sirus had some great drops and was a challenging fight. However, very few players got to experience him blind because access to Sirus required gathering 4 keys which could take up to an hour for a newer player to gather. If I need to spend an hour to just gain entry to the fight, I'm not going into it without watching a video beforehand. Gate the reward by all means, but allow the players to access the content so that failure isn't punishing. If the counterpoint is that, well, then there's no investment to access the Sirus fight, my response to that would be that the time investment is the investment that an unskilled player makes vs a skilled player. If a skilled player can do the fight on his first try in 5 minutes vs an unskilled player taking 30 minutes to complete the fight after a few tries, that right there is the investment; and it's a sufficient investment without having to punish the player further. As it stands, every failed attempt feels so punishing that the pressure of success and the fear of failure overtakes the excitement of trying it out yourself.

Lack of alteration orbs makes trying to get even 2 stats you want from an item very hard. In PoE1 I was crafting gear with 3-4 stats I wanted before the end of the campaign.

I am slowly learning how the passive tree works. At first it looked VERY COMPLEX. It sounds like instead of looking farther along the branches to see whats at the ends, stay only 1 or 2 points ahead and things will in a way work themselves out.

I think something no one has covered that is needed is being able to see what killed you when you die. Often there is so much going on and a lot of different enemies then your character just goes to zero hp in a second. Something that told you what it was that caused that would be useful so you can understand the game better. Also for the map losing its boss or delirium or breach etc when you die, that’s dreadful mechanic. To avoid abuse, if/when it is completed and rewards received then it goes away if you die. But if you die and don’t claim the rewards you shouldn’t be punished.

They should provide a feature to disenchant and dismantle an item in your inventory from merchant store that way you don't have to teleport back and forth to the town or settlement. I think players will buy this for convenience.

I just wish you could add two modifiers with orbs of augmentation. That way, crafting blues would be FUN. (A blue item with 3 useful stats is enough to make useful improvements.) But, crafting blues, knowing you're going to have to spend EXPENSIVE/RARE ORBS TO TURN THEM YELLOW is NOT FUN. I have thousands of orbs of transmute & augment. And like 20 regal orbs and 10 exalted.
