Basic literacy isn't falling apart, look at how prevalent text is in social media. As Thomas Sowell put it: "The problem isn't that Johnny can't read. The problem isn't even that Johnny can't think. The problem is that Johnny doesn't know what thinking is; he confuses it with feeling."

No: Literacy is falling apart. If you have adults that are struggling to comprehend at what was a grade 10 level, and you have kids who struggle to put a sentence together by the time they are in grade 4/5, there is a serious problem. I never thought of myself as a reader but - sometime ago... I realized: I dig into white papers... for fun? Interest? curiosity? Critical thinking skills - that is a whole other problem, and it is related. Basic literacy is foundational to organizing complex nuanced thoughts - our minds don't hold onto a pile of data in active memory, and so what you need is a system of correlating and forming relations between idea's into a complex singular idea that can be held and processed along other data. The better you are at doing this, the more abstract of a problem you can handle and deal with.

Similar sentiment that I've always adhered to: Follow the Money. People generally don't do things for no reason, and the most common reason to do things that effect strangers is to make money. So if something sounds weirdly perfect with no downsides, try to figure out how someone could make money out of it. If you can't see a way for someone to make money from it, odds are it's either not real or the money is coming from *you* in a way they hope you won't notice. This works on determining conspiracies as well as scams, except with scams it shows you how a real thing is costing you money, and with conspiracies it shows you that since there's no money to be made, the thing can't possibly be real.

@Chuck854120 күн бұрын
Yup. Absolutely. No creators owe allegiance to Google. They just want that ad revenue. Just like how hackers and programmers slowly fight each other, the free market will decide what happens. Personally, if Honey/pie became a behemoth - what’s the problem? It’s ok if GOOGLE is a behemoth? lol No. they just want that ad revenue. The internet was way better before it became the primary ad medium. I’m all for Google losing footing in the race, and I could care less if creators actually get real jobs. Everything that honey does is already available without the drama. Brave browser blocks all KZbin ads. SponsorBlock plugin blocks all baked in creator ads. Twitch Adblock extensions are a thing, and there’s crypto currencies that pay to watch ads. And for the tech savvy, creating and installing a PiHole on their home network blocks ALL other ads - on every device connected.
@Arcidi22520 күн бұрын
At the same time this allowed it to replace legacy media. Don't get me wrong, my favorite KZbinrs are those who are making it as a hobby. KZbin went from 25 million in 2006, to approximately 2 billion videos in 2010 and then 14 billion videos in 2023. KZbin would have absolutely been shut down without some source of funding.

To be honest, something like Honey could potentially work really, really well. The main issue with Honey, from a consumer standpoint, was that it wasn't providing THE BEST COUPON DEALS. The consumer doesn't care that content creators were losing affiliate link revenue. That part is irrelevant to the vast majority of Honey's users. The only change Honey really needs to make is this: Stop working with online shops to limit user's potential savings. They can take all the affiliate link revenue they want as long as they're genuinely finding us the best working promo codes. Do not screw over your users. Go ahead and screw over influencers and online shops, but not the users.

Affiliate links inherently are a scam. Think about it: someone who isn't the marketplace or the seller is getting a % of your purchase while providing you, the consumer, nothing of value. I want that money! The internet would be such a better place without affiliate link revenue-sharing. Cut them out, and give me a discount on the product instead of paying some influencer or other entity. Btw, affiliate links are also why it's near impossible to find faithful and honest websites that offer product suggestions. It's always unreliable because websites are financially incentivized to shill whatever brand that offers the best affiliate link revenue share.

The problem with apps like this (even if they didn't advertise themselves as LA trusted, which is an instant no for me) is that they immediately give off the impression of an IRL money glitch. I can understand donation supported, indie ad-blockers who give you a service for free and only require enough money to keep afloat. I can NOT understand a for-profit company which *gives you money* for *shutting down ads.* They're obvious not doing this out of kindness since they're *for profit.* So there has to be something *really* nefarious under the hood for them to get enough money to stay afloat, enough money to supposedly pay *you* _and_ enough money to keep a company profitable. And chances are, they're not going to milk the multi-billion dollar companies or even content creators because that comes with _complications._ So what's left is the actual user.

The other thing is, honey is paid by buisinesses to not give you the best codes, They give you a 10% code, when there is a 30% code on the internet you could use instead, and the business pays honey so you don't know. "PIE" was also originally categorized as a FOOD advertisement. But after reports that changed for some of their ads. Other ads are still improperly categorized, seems like they are intentionally misleading Google.
@nej214719 күн бұрын
The idea of Pie will never work, advertisers will see that they get less return on their investments than the competition, start checking the service themselves and find that the only people that watch the ads are "Ad-farmers" (Trademark pending /s), that are not actually buying their products and stop using the service. Ad-farmers will also start using bots to get money and that will remove even more return for any potential "investors" (ie: ad companies). Unless they make the service into something that they are not advertising it as currently, the whole idea is pretty dead in the water. (IMHO)

i disagree on 12:47, literacy isnt falling apart, you can teach a child how to read, but you cant teach a child to understand what it's reading, and how it feels about it, and i think the basic understanding of what you read, it's based on experiences you seen through life, or through other people explaining to you, on how they feel, as a toddler you dont understand words, cuz you look at letters, form words, say basic words, as the years go by, your basic understanding begins to grow, people read books, not only to expand their vocabulary, but to also understand multiple sides of imaginary worlds, and feelings of fictional characters, sometimes a story is told, and as i read that story, i also want to understand every single thing from that book, that's why, people call it immersion.

While I agree that KZbin should be allowed to serve ads, I detest the way they go about doing it. A 6 second ad is more impactful to me than a 30 unskippable. In fact, I keep getting served a 4 minute unskippable “wellness” ad that forces me to reload the page to “skip”. That company is now blacklisted on my router. If KZbin continued to serve 6-15 second ads, and just left it alone, I wouldn’t go out of my way to remove them from my internet experience. Instead they got greedy, and now I’m a pirate. Argh.

I got a degree in Graphic Design which is closely related to advertising. I'd say about 80-90% of what a Graphic Designer works on is ads. So I know a lot about the importance of ads. Without ads it would be like opening up your store in the middle of an uninhabited desert, you'd be extremely lucky to get anyone to show up to your store. So to anyone who says ads are not important, I challenge you to open up a business without any form of marketing whatsoever, don't even tell your family or friends about it, and see how well you do.
