Developer here: The reason why so many (particularly indie) games struggle with multiplayer is because it's fundamentally structural to your engine. It's not something you can "just do later". It impacts literally every part of how you build something. So if you hear about a game saying they don't have multiplayer yet but they are "working on it" or it's "coming after launch" NOPE, you can just toss that idea out, if it happens at all it will be garbage. To put this in perspective, there is one recent counter-example: Stardew Valley. He promised multiplayer in his kickstarter, he wrote an article on his experience trying to get 4 player coop into the game. He spend months on his own trying to learn network coding and such but eventually gave up. He then hired a network developer and they worked together for a year to implement it. In the end they had rewritten 70% of the code base and had pretty functional (though not great) 4 player coop. Needless to say, such a heroic effort to make good on a promise and implement a feature most people don't care about (for a game like Stardew) is exceptionally rare.

Exactly, very astute and accurate analysis. Any game that makes the sort of promises that Fractured Veil did (22:27) immediately raises my bullshit detector. Guaranteed this game is going to be a disaster when it releases in early-access, if it releases at all. Too many promises, too many features, and supposedly in a MMO style world. No way.

Honestly same. The only promising game right now looks to be Enshrouded and Dwarven Legend. Others either look utterly terrible (looking at you Shattered Veil, it's 2023 and the game looks like 7 days to die) or they just seem like HEAVY copying other games. Especially the last one, Grand Emprise, one developer? That amount of buildings and progress by one guy? It's either done in like 15 years, or it's released early and it's going to be shit as fuck. Buggy, low fps, trash mechanics, not working properly. That's what I honestly expect from that game if dev team doesnt get bigger. But if that game turns out great, i'm putting thousands of hours into that shit.

Epic is one of the worst anti consumer companies out there. They make exclusivity deals with other game companies, which technically should be illegal. Any small store that sells games, wouldn't even be able to do that, it's a practice which aims to make games stores go out of business. It's a monopolistic behavior. Steam is so successful not because they make exclusivity deals, but because they provide such a good service, there isn't a need to use another platform. That's because Steam is actually a private company not like Epic which they are a for profit company only. Any world where Epic gains market share, would be absolutely terrifying for games. Just fucking image, a pay to access features in Epic store. Oh you want to comment? you want to read/review a game? oh you want access to a cool profile. Guess you have to pay up. That's Epic. That's bad.

2 of the biggest aspects that, imo, modern games/game engines should be focusing on for immersion/entertainment would be physics and interactive environment. They may be content one in the same but the ability to use abilities items that affect characters/npcs and the environment and vice-versa is CRUCIAL. In some magic wielding game you should be able to pull fire from a torch and hit an enemy that burns them "stunning" them and affecting their look, or setting fire to the environment, trees/grass, or even buildings, affecting their look/efficacy, as well. Being able to interact/affect the environment be it structures or the "world" youre in "almost" every way imaginable based on the genre would be so immersive. What is more immersion-breaking than summoning a comet to strike, or launching some type of explosive just for the environment to remain unaffected and your enemy to "fall over" after grunting..?

I don't necessarily dislike them, but every game that has them runs into problems. Big enemies typically get stuck on terrain constantly. Or cannot chase you into a cave, so you just stand inside and shoot them to death while running out of arrows. Or you build a base and the monster just destroys every structure you've built in a few hits. It typically doesn't lead to great gameplay.

Asmons point with Valheim is the exact reason I dont get into survival games much when there isn't a clear goal. Valheim and The Forest/Sons of the Forest are some of the few that I enjoy for those reasons. His take on being able to change things is...odd though. He says he doesn't like games that let you change things and has everyone go through the same experience but says he doesn't like that about V Rising (which kinda has a set experience) while Valheim, although the order of the bosses I believe matter, the experience people have are going to be vastly different as it's procedurally generated so how close the next biome is or how abundant I am in resources is not the same.

The biggest thing holding Valheim back is that it's almost unplayable multiplayer. Unless you get lucky and have a properly modded server, it is impossible to actually play multiplayer without constantly dying to lag or rubberbanding while never being able to damage enemies.

I've become a bit skeptical now whenever I hear that a game is procedurally generated. Don't get me wrong procedurally generated maps can be pretty good like with Valheim. But procedural generated environments have an element of repetition, and lack of character when compared to the counter parts. Like Grounded or Smalland for example, the intentionality that you can pick up on in the map design gives it more depth to the environment than a game like Valhiem.

While I too wish for Asmon's suggestion to have 1000 people server's on survival games. It is never gonna happen or is viable just off the fact that each one of those players has the ability to build and craft large amounts of objects into the world.. That one fact alone is what will always have to limit the server population, the world would just be waaay too big and cause too much lag and instability once it becomes filled with added objects and buildings by the players. Take Rust for example, during the last week before wipes the servers usually get insanely laggy and unstable just due to the fact of how much bases have been created in the past weeks/days. What would be cool, is if there is a game that creates an instance/portal type area where all these players could possibly meet up, no crafting or building allowed in this zone. It's just purely for social gathering or possible pvp in certain zones.

I understand the argument about Steam being a monopoly and that its good that a competitor like Epic gets something, but the issue is simply that Epic has been around how long now? And they've done exactly what to provide a better service than steam? Epic isn't pro-consumer. The buy exclusivity contracts to try and force people to use their service. But they dont offer any support forums, reviews, or community tools. They dont have a workshop/modding hub, they dont offer any multiplayer server support... The dont have a system in place to flag cheaters and hackers so they cant ruin other games once caught... And NOBODY expects them to have all of these features. But they've literally not even tried to win over users by making their platform better. They buy exclusivity and give away crappy games for free every month and expect people to use their shitty store-front. That is why nobody likes Epic Game Store. They refuse to actually compete. They dont try to offer a better alternative to Steam.

It's pretty painful to see that 6/11 of these games just look like cash grabs, where the dev promises the world, the sky and even the moon and yet delivers an absolutely subpar version of one out of the three while constantly promising that the other two are coming as the game exists in early-access hell. Meanwhile, it doesn't matter if the other two are coming because the game is built on shit code, store-bought assets with no cohesive art style, mediocre combat and other systems, and 90% of players abandon after a few patches that try to fix horrific bugs that break the game or make the game a total jankfest. With that being said, the 5 that aren't cash grabs look promising!

Epic exclusives are always a complete pass for me. There's no good damn reason to make a game exclusive to a stupid launcher/storefront on PC. 6:05 It's because unity is not an engine for making actual video games. More of a learning tool than anything else. If you want actual well functioning multiplayer, not even unreal works. You'd have to just write your own server software. A reminder - when building the back end of a multiplayer game - the networking logic is at the forefront. You have to write your code with the idea that you'll be working with incoming streams from other players. In order to ensure good performance, you must separate the update engine from the rest of the simulation. As of, you must be able to run the work, whether you have the data about what the other players are doing and what not. You can tell that Valheim hasn't done their homework with this one, as the moment you have a remote user do something in the presence of a big grid, the entire simulation simply chokes, introducing lag for everybody. There are multiple reasons that is, but at the forefront we have the issue of the networking code being so rudimentary, one has to wonder if they even factored in the idea of having multiplayer, back when they decided to start this project. 23:55 Tmw this guy said he played the shit out of Diablo 2 back in the day. Do you, or do you not like complexity? Pick a damn side. 24:15 You don't need to think what it is, they told you what it is - 23:02 Last game is probably an asset flip.

As a gamer for over two decades, I feel server population size is a hindrance for some games that would benefit from upping the player count. Off-hand I can't remember which game it was, but it would phase players in areas together throughout multiple servers so there wouldn't be a huge lag spike from a mass population in one location. The idea behind the coding was genius and not sure why it wasn't implemented in these future games. Hopefully as technology keeps advancing this issue can get resolved. again

@@BIGmlemsnah... foxhole is split into multiple servers... Take one big map and split it into few parts i think now there is like 36 parts / hexes and each hex is like 100-ish players per hex Anvil Empires is close to this However... Star Citizen is working on it and will use it... as it NEEDS it

Its easier for one guy to make a game than a team of people who have to agree, work together, and work toward a common goal. Bigger teams just cause more code conflicts.

I generally prefer difficulty options (my main exceptions are Souls games) and I don't just mean easy, normal, hard, but more specific tweaks like number of mobs, more aggresdive AI, etc. The shared experience thing isn't such a big deal when you realize you can just easily modify the sentence by saying you beat X game on X difficulty setting. You can even do this with Souls games with leveling.

Yeah so I got Smalland. Ya know how it looks cute and easy? MOAR DEATH THAN VALHEIM. Go down tree? Die. Look at leaf? Die. There's a rustle? Die. I mean this is a good thing -I don't like cute -but the sheer amount of failure isn't apparent in the packaging. I am a failure as a Smallperson. An epic failure.

To be honest these new Unreal Engine 5 games looks nice graphically but to be honest looks like shit in gameplay and animations, probably because Unreal Engine 5 give you much more adventage in time, you just can make SAME game much faster than before with its technologies, thats why probably those games are made fastly and for people it looks WOW NICE GRAPHIC but they didnt took more effort than typical Indie Games in my opinion.

Survival base builder game devs: Why aren't any of you making darker more grim games? I love survival building games, but they are all uninteresting and boring in terms of theme. At least one indie dev or company out there. For the love of god can you make a grittier, darker and more brutal world setting? Please? Maybe one where your character is the villain. Like a failed humanoid experiment creature made from alchemy, that seeks to build powerful steampunk construct warriors to bring down a happy peaceful kingdom. I love survival building games. Especially ones focusing on mining and industry like Valheim. But most of them seems made for kids, or they have boring typical heroic stories or main characters. Someone please make a brutal, dark, gritty and hopeless world in this genre. Where you're the villain. Like some sort of living slime that can take the shape of humans and mind control them to mine and build for you. Just ... something which isn't creatively bankrupt from the get-go. TL;DR Survival base building games good. Themes and world settings usually boring.

When star citizen succeeds in building their cutting edge server meshing game servers more games will begin to adopt the techniques and suddenly these large survival worlds will be doable it's similar to PSO2 but without the loading screen and each instance is on it's own server basically you could have loads of servers segmenting the world so that we have instances so untied that they can't crash eachother from the background but so intertwined play wise you can interact with players and objects across the server barrier and the best part you can't even see the barrier! This will make it more possible it will be seemless to the player and allow for these realistic graphics and physics while not totally destroying the server's optimisation in the process but most importantly! far larger playerbases per instance than if it was all a single shard think Ready Player One or SAO what it will mean for survival games though is unprecedented levels of physics and graphics beyond what we have now and too much happening might crash a small instance but once fully optimised you'll probably be able to have like 500 players all in one spot without killing the servers or the players pc's! It means the issue of bad network optimisation for mmo's will be a thing of the past and I think this is what's missing for survival mmo's and is what limits them check out the story of Everquest Next Landmark a game that started as a dev engine tool for the next everquest game but it became a survival game enshrouded is very similar probably the closest i've seen it's also grandfather of that plastic cel shading style fortnite adopted and one of the 2 earliest games to adopt voxels that wasn't entirely cubed and it was planned to have destruction mechanics but it should down in 2016 or 2014 something like that I was a founder it had potential but the server hardware/software and pc hardware wasn't there for it at the time it killed my PSU made it overheat... it was terrible optimisation at least thats what people said but I think it was due to hardware limitations they couldn't get it to run smoothly if they wanted to when it reached open beta the cause for the lag became apparent it couldn't handle the amount of players on each island roughly the size and shape of the pc pubg and fortnite maps and filled with detailed biomes something the br genre adopted later it's graphics were akin to what a modern graphics WoW would look like the style that fortnite adopted like I said before! Enshrouded isn't exactly the same the lighting is obviously more on the realistic side but it's still close to what I remember and it adopts elements that seem sci-fi too though not as much as landmark did, anyways with so many players voxelmancing the cubes a term used for using the smooth tool shrink the cubes that are the same size as the ones used to build in enshrouded beyond the developers expectations they were able to make microvoxels and get buildings down to a scary and intricate level of detail the top experts could make things like the towers in LOTR etc. or my favourite a HALO armada my sci-fi LA penthouse up on a mountain had a view of the sunset with floating ships players had managed to build with sci-fi luminescent light voxels but once it reached open beta the servers broke most people left and the game died most of the world moved on and forgot it existed... I'd dare say enshrouded is a spiritual successor but also became a warning to any developers trying to create sandboxes with voxels it's difficult to do when theres so many players engines and mostly the networking of old suffers these type of survival games are not networking friendly hence the limitation I just hope i'll see the day server meshing becomes widely available knowledge an experienced networker with 20yrs experience has been saying on youtube that what they are developing in the star citizen engine for networking code is above his head he grasps the basics like I can but the rest is some magic we don't understand and the rammifications are gonna be felt by the industry it's that cutting edge they got a test build working which is the magic he spoke of cause it apparently should be possible they just gotta scale that up to the wider verse and refine it and have players test it... beyond the basics i'm not even sure the ones making it know what it will be capable of once fully realised it's a seed a seed to the future of online gaming that will change the face of it forever and I assume that means future survival MMO's could utilise this tech but by then I think we'll all be playing them in VR the VR world or as apple is calling it Spatial Computing, so instead of a VR headset I guess we call them Spatial Computing Devices [SCD's a term I came up with I hope it takes, it sounds cool and futuristic and besides it's easier to remember] things are advancing quick and they are getting to 4k level with new chips coming out for their competitors and apples being 8k ready i'd say we are nearly reaching the refinement level where VR, AR headsets and other SCD's are advancing quicker and reaching the level where it's time for them to leave enterprise and become more mainstream, some companies have already started which means valve, sony, meta and the other companies are about to have competion, this competition and abundance of the tech will drive prices down on older models! it will become as common as a phone or as a gpu which means we are already on the precipice of a new age and it has begun to accelerate like AI did over the course of the past 2 years so I reckon in 2-3 yrs time SCD's will become mainstream like consoles especially with the increase just this month with 10,000 games being allowed vr support due to a UE5 plug-in developers will now be able to more easily add vr to their games! 3 yrs is plenty time for me to save up and pick out what my headset will be! I'm kinda considering the Beyond headset!

Non changeable mechanics/ difficulty options. Agreed not liking that. In fact I am gonna take it further. Mathematically it is simply not possible to optimally balance and tailor a game to many different options. You will loose resources doing that and it will always be suboptimal. Can not fathom why people like this boring, bad, and unfortunate ubisoft approach. It will always hit someone worse than others. Too easy or too difficult for some, however it allows the game to better equip players dealing with challenges. No doubt. It is also a lazy approach leaving some balance to the players resulting in an often sub par experience.

The armchair dev comments kill me. One dev is not making the entire survival game. They are probably a coder, and that's it. They buy tons of store assets, rip free assets, or on the rarity, hire contractors to make art, animations, HUD/UI, etc. The reason large teams take longer to make changes, is for a myriad of reasons, could be anything. Their codebase could be huge, with tons of systems. Modifying one sub system impacts 20 others, and those all need to be tested. Or it's just harder to search/resolve bugs and what causes them, due to the data size. More people also means more opinions. You have to have meetings to discuss ideas, resolutions, create a plan of action, scheduling, etc.

13:30 it isn't so much that we just want steam to have a monopoly. those are bad, I agree. it is just inconvenient. All my games are on steam, and I just like having everything in one library. When I get online with my friends, I dont want to have to open 3 or 4 libraries to see what I have installed to play.

It's not that steam should have and another store. And steam is a store. Shouldn't have. This isn't a different console type. Stores Should always be in control of the goods it can carry. And should never be allowed to restrict that which other stores can not. It's never in the best interest of a consumer to be controlled by a free market.
