@Fa1nTy objectively, there is a major lack of innovation. There are not many new ideas coming out. When stuff was first coming out, it was all new. It's very hard to make new stuff after everything we made already. (Since people clearly misunderstood this, I'm talking about "There was a time when the first MMO came out". Massive shifts. New genres.) (Note 2: you guys are so dumb "blah blah that's an unrealistic expectation" Yeah, it used to not be, that's why it isn't as fun. Great job.)

I am about 70 hours into Chained Echoes, almost at the end. This is one of the better RPG’s I’ve ever played, and it’s an indie game made by one person. One person. And they did a better job with more love and care poured into their world than all these AAA companies producing garbage. It gives me hope, for individuals though, not for big companies

You have to remember that as we get older our brain changes, specifically younger people are programmed to enjoy new things and older people are programmed to enjoy things they are familiar with, and to enjoy things they haven't tried before less. This is where the term "settle down" often comes from, the psychology of someones brain changing to enjoy stability and familiarity. It's not a bad thing at all, but it's often the reason why people in their 30s and 40s will start to dislike things the younger generation enjoys. This goes for games as well, if you play games similar to that which you played when you were younger you are much more likely to enjoy them more than games which are new and just came out even when you remove any sort of objective quality differences between them, and vice versa someone in their teens is more likely to move from game to game enjoying each new experience more than if they were to play the same game extensively. If you want to read more there are lots of papers online about it just look up "emerging adulthood" or more specifically, "plasticity in developmental programming" which is the psychology term for this phenomenon.

Part of the problem is that a lot of games aren't made to be fun anymore. Most things put out by AAA studios are only being made to make money or be an esport. That being said, plenty of of indie developers have filled the void rather well. And despite their bad practices, a good amount of Nintendo games are made with fun in mind. If you're not having fun playing games, you're playing the wrong games.

I think there are still a lot of good AAA games. As a JRPG fan, there's been tons of really great new JRPGs like Triangle Strategy, Monster Hunter, Tales of, and Trails of games. There's a whole new genre of high production quality HD2D art style games that I love. And of course there is Elden Ring and God of War, which were phenomenal. Ironically, the best PC games are probably console ports, because they don't have live service/monetization bull.

It's actually very simple. When your younger, time doesn't matter. You'll do whatever as long as your having fun. When you get a little older. You realize how precious time is and the time needed to play the game becomes precision. Also social media has slowly fried everyone's attention span, so the video game has to be made a certain way to retain anybody. It's tragic. I can't even sit down and enjoy a game without thinking about how I'm not working towards my goals.

@@Thrall966 That means nothing, online games are only hard because there are tons of sweats in every single game who plays for 8 to 10 hours a day every day. The games you mentioned are NOT fundamentally hard, they are perceived as "hard" simply because of the community. As a working full time adult, I will obviously have troubles playing with teenagers who have tons of free time to dump on online games. Take Fall Guys, there are sweats in that game too, but I don't see anyone saying that Fall Guys it's a hard game. This is actually misleading. Define 'enjoyed'. Some people enjoy gambling or hurting themselves or taking drugs. That doesn't mean it wasn't 'time wasted'. It was time wasted. They are just mindless addicts having their brains controlled by chemicals via these powerful in-game systems. Means nothing. What matters is healthy time spent; hence, Harris' organisation, 'Time Well Spent'. The key here is 'well'.

After rath of the lich king came out, they finally convinced me to play. At first it seemed super fun but that soon ended. Even at that time they needed me to install and configure several mods. I got them installed and met up with them for the first time. We picked up a quest and instantly my friends were super mad at me for wasting time reading what the quest was. I feel like the two main issues with modern gaming are the following: one, a lot of games today are made for profit first, and fun second. Games originally were always something more niche and more about exploration and experimentation of new technology and ideas. It wasn't a super corp with 100 execs optimizing how to suck the most cash out of its playerbase and trying to cash in on already existing successful ideas. It was a couple of dudes who were having fun messing around with a cool new concept. This is evident with the popularity of Indie games, as most popular indie games are fun, interesting, and novel ideas and experiments first, with the making of money as an aside. The second issue is that given enough time, people will tend to optimize the fun out of things. In an environment where one strategy works better than another, players will tend to converge on this more optimal strategy. This can lead to stale, boring, and stagnant metas with non-dynamic interactions. It can also lead to situations where playing becomes work. You are no longer playing to have fun, and do things your own way, but instead, you are forced into working on becoming more efficient and optimal around a strategy or type of gameplay that you didn't get to choose yourself, as evident in competitive games, FPSs, and MMOs. This problem has always existed, but is more evident as you get older because you become smarter. For example, when you are a kid, tic-tac-toe is fun because you are an idiot, and you aren't smart enough to realize optimal play. As an adult, tic-tac-toe is boring as hell, because anyone with more than one braincell knows how to play optimally to always force a draw. There is no point in playing the game when you already know what the outcome will be, and the steps involved are always the same. Hopefully, with awareness of these problems, devs can try and build games that attempt to solve these issues in one way or another. Perhaps, with something like AI which can learn and grow itself, making games more dynamic, and making it harder to have the playerbase converge on singular optimal metas.

Mainstream Gamer: "Gaming isn't fun anymore." "Gaming isn't what it used to be." "There aren't any fun games." Literally everyone else: "Holy shit, every year gaming get's better and better, I can't wait to see what's next!" This is the most true for indie gamers. Which, I am so happy is on the rise. I play plenty of indie games. They can only change gameplay concepts they don't have the money to push actually technology of games WHICH IS WHAT I WANT. @@crazychainsaw007 I would say Boneworks, a rather indie team pushes the boundaries of VR. In fact, many VR teams continue to push how you interact with it. Haptic feedback vests, treadmills, gloves, peripherals, etc. Technology is on the rise. RTX was introduced in what, 2018? UE5 was last year and continues to improve to make environments look pretty much better than real life. Iunno - I feel like it's getting better every year. As far as simulated world - there are tons of player driven economy/world games out there. From 4x games like Universalis, to Hack and Slash Tacticals like Mount and Blade, to Dwarf Fortress which simulates basically everything you can think of.

@@infinityseven5924 I heavily disagree, again - this is if you're looking at AAA titles only and mainstream games. If you took a step back, you would realize that in for 2021 for instance, over 10,000 games have been released. Now, if you go back to... say, 2005, it's less than 50. Look at that difference. So I'm not blaming you for seeing a crap ton of bad games and thinking it's bad, it's just the SHEER VOLUME of crap has increased. Even if 5000 good games are out there, you'd have a hard time sifting it through without reviews/curators/YTers. I also disagree that resources are the issue. Look at Rimworld, Factorio, Dinkum, Prison Architect, Project Zomboid, 7 Days to Die and many more poopular indie games that are 1/2 man dev teams. The games are out there. People just DONT LOOK. For instance, 2022. What games came out this year that were amazing that revised formulas or made new ones? GhostWire Tokyo (new formula) Monster Hunter Rise (renewed formula) Borderlands Tiny Tina (renewed formula) Dofromantik (New formula) Rogue Legacy 2 (Renewed fomula) Plagued Tale Requim (Renewed Formula) Stray (New formula) Raft (Not true 2022, but was released, New Formula) Warhammer 3 (Told by many fans this is the best one, and was a very new take on the warhammer series, so I'd say new formula) Cult of the Lamb (New Formula) Vampire Survivors ( New Formula) V Rising (New formula) I could go ON AND ON AND ON man.

@@infinityseven5924 I was merely pointing out popular and rather innovative games from 2022 specifically, but I guarantee you people will be tlaking about Valheim, Terraria, Project Zomboid, 7 Days to die, Factorio/Rimworld, KSP, Powerwashing Simulator, etc. You can have conversations with people today who pick out their favorite games in the past and find indie titles in the mix from the SNES era and galore. I think you're trying to be so negative about this that you're overlooking that people who step out of their comfort zone and have a wider breath of gaming tastes tend to have many gems. Case and point - there are flash games from adult swim/newgrounds/cartoon network people can point out as being amazing. Flash games. I think resources are apart of the equation. I don't think they're the entire equation like you're saying. It's easy for you to stand there and point out a point I made is ridiculous for being on one end, when you're literally on the opposite with no proof of your own, whereas I'm literally pointing out games that are 1. Amazing 2. Severely undermanned, and 3. Run on extremely lite engines. I'm also not saying by having more resources you can't have a better game, obviously more resources means more at your disposal of course, but it's not the entire ingredient of a good game. I said "renewed formula" as in they improved on what was before it. Warhammer series in general includes large/gigantic units, flying units, heroic units, and spells. You're telling me Medieval 2 has any of these? Raft is a "slightly" different take on the survival genre" Okay, I'd like you to elaborate on how you came about to this conclusion and give me some comparisons on which games are like it. I'll give you mine. - Your entire survival depends on your raft. Most other games if you die or lose your base, you can start over. Or, it doesn't allow you to lose your base/vehicle. - The hook/fishing for resources mechanic has not been seen in any other survival game. There is fishing, but not fishing for resources actively.

I'll say that games nowadays aren't made with the same design philosophies that the games we loved back in the day were. AAA Games nowadays feel like jobs rather than fun, focusing on lots of content rather than a refined experience. I never played the original God of War games for the PS2, so I have no nostalgia, but I went back and tackled them and they're absolutely amazing. I think the "things used to be better when I was a kid" mentality will always be present as people grow older. There were people in the PS2 era complaining about how much better things were in the SNES days and PC golden age. Like this guy said gaming peaked in 2014, which is a 1-3 years before Bloodborne, Overwatch, Dark souls 3, Divinity Original Sin II, Hollow Knight, BoTW, The Witcher 3, Stardew Valley, Civ 6, Persona 5, etc. etc. Amazing games that I'm sure were the peak of gaming for other people. It's all subjective, you can't objectively say Smite pre-2014 was better than Overwatch. I think it comes down to your life changing and not having the same amount of time to dedicate to a game. When I was a kid I would play Wow all evening every day after school with friends. Now I maybe have a few hours each week to play online with friends because I have so many more life commitments. Of course I'll remember my WoW days with rose tinted glasses, but that doesn't mean that a game like FFXIV, Overwatch 2, Sea of Thieves, Fortnite, Minecraft, or some other game fills that role for a kid now, and he'll have that same experience just with a different game.

something that isn't mentioned in the video is we lose dopamine receptor production as we age and dopamine stimulus hits from gaming lose its power and addictive qualities, couple that with change in priorities as we age, attention spans, available time, and just overall experience from playing so many games we generally lose interest because nothing is new to us, but it doesn't mean there isn't a whole new generation experiencing gaming like we first did as children

I disagree: Sports. Look at people who love sports... when they were young they loved sports and when old they still love sports. And these games themselves NEVER change. Age isn't affecting their enjoyment of sport at all. Why? I think because these things change: the competition gets better, skills and tactics shift. In most games, the AI is identical and predictable. If you've played games for years, games do, generally, become easy. If the AI evolved, employing different tactics and had varied behaviour, and could surprise you, we'd still find games just as fun no matter how old we get.

Easy… The gaming industry has been become a victim of its own success. How do you even top games like Skyrim, GT7, The last of us, Uncharted (just to name a few), without spending hundreds of millions and a decade to create something as new, novel and entertaining as the previous games? It’s an almost impossible task.

Man, thank you Asmon. Sounds really sad but you talking about the Nintendo prompted me to go looking for some of the older games I played on the original Xbox (my first console, from around 2005/6 onwards). Really funny thinking back on some of those games - and a quick shoutout to SW Battlefront II.

Everything is really a relative level of wasting time depending on how you look at it. If you enjoy the time you spent and aren't hurting anyone it's not a "waste of time" in my opinion. Although I do think having hobbies or pursuits that are somewhat productive or challenging physically/mentally is better than ones where you just turn off your mind mostly for hours and spend a lot of money without any substantive benefit to yourself or others besides the "fun" factor. Which is why I personally quit gaming but I don't really hold gaming against anyone or look down on them as long as they're doing something substantive with their life in other ways (which I wasn't when I spent most of my time online or gaming.)

It's usually during a time when you're burnt out on gaming and you need a long break to clear your mind. Either take a vacation, do physical activities, hang out with friends or just disconnect from it all. Time is precious ⏳

I felt this for such a long time. I always believed id finally be an old person when i stopped playing video games, and i started feeling that like 5 years ago. At the beginning of 2021 i specifically and intentionally switched two of my habits, firstly I chose to stay away or heavily limit myself from heavily monetized games (i personally never spent very much on these anyways, but its so easy to tell how much content is driven for sales rather than fun), and focused back on single player experiences, or games whos only extra fees were DLC (mostly nintendo). At the time, I thought this was the single most impactful reason i wasnt having fun in games anymore. Secondly, not a note from the video, I chose to *never* read a game journalist review, or at the least, not let it affect my excitement and/or disappointment with any new game i was personally excited for. A year and change later it incredibly spiked my passion for gaming again. I think both parts were big impacts, but a year later this absolutely and uncontestably was the real reason I wasnt having fun. I was reading reviews, seeings bugs i wouldnt even ever experience, or just see a tanked review because they assumingly didnt do a paid sponsorship or whatever. I didnt recognize that almost every gaming journalist is making content to argue about, critiquing every little thing rather than whether or not the game is just fun. I seriously cannot express how much childhood fun, joy, and wonder I've reclaimed for myself following those steps and playing games. 2023 has an absolute banger of game releases im excited for which I havent had since probably 2013. Already we've had forspoken, dead space, and harry potter (your own opinions on all three are your own), we also have star wars, baldurs gate, armored core, hades 2, and a TON of new IP single player games like wo long fallen dynasty and others to look forward to! Games i HAVE been playing and having an absolute blast throughout are most notably, splatoon 3 (ive enjoyed 1 and 2 before my habit change, but i seriously cannot express in a post how much better splatoon is than ANY other shooter on the market if you want to actually just have fun), baldurs gate 3 (just in early access, but i have 400 hours and cannot wait for full release), and even forspoken, which i know has terrible reviews and dashed expectations, but the farther i get in, the more it feels like im an earth avatar and have all these cool element abilities, regardless of the notable lack of cities, cringe dialogue (that gets slightly better but still cringe) and lack luster story, the gameplay is just fun! I hope anyone feeling the game enjoyment sink tries the two steps i had if they can relate, or if not, finds their own way to change their habits to rekindle the flame of their childhood sparkle that games bring ♥

In my case, I just don't buy anything new anymore. I often return to some of my old time favorite games and it's an especially good feeling when I replay them after more than a decade or so, it kinda feels like first time again and it reminds me why gaming was so great at that time. Of course, it doesn't really work with all games, some of them were only good in my memories, but a lot of them did age well enough that I could keep replaying them often, I don't need to buy new games.

I do the same but with games i never played, idk why people think they have to play what's new and i'm not talking about retro, if you just browse through steam for some time you'll find a lot of games that were released years ago and are still good. When nobody is talking about something is when you can judge without subjection from other people if you truly like that or not.

I picked up RuneScape over COVID and fell in love with the base game new content that harmonize so perfectly. This is because back before we had the Internet the disc would have to be absolutely complete, any game breaking bugs would essentially result in them having to refund copies and redistribute out new discs to the customers. When we got the Internet, developers and publishers became lazy as fuck because they can just patch their unfinished games overnight 👎 the Internet basically incentivises developers to make half finished games unfortunately.

I'm 36 now. Played games my whole life. Spent a lot of that time on mostly WoW and other MMOs. I'd recommend trying some of those exploration survival games like Valheim like he mentioned. It's the only kind of game that's really grabbing my attention anymore. I'm really enjoying Conan Exiles, and ARK as well. Exploring, fighting, building, dying horribly, rebuilding, etc. It can rekindle your love for gaming.

This is precisely why I barely use social media anymore, either. It's like I'm only reacting compulsively out of habit rather than doing something I actively enjoy. If anything this is a good thing as it's got me back into reading, which is both pretty much free and more useful a hobby anyway.

We grew up with the evolution of video games, remember how hard it was to connect & play original halo online? What was that called again, Xbox connect (XBC)? The magic was tied into our childhoods, and nobody will ever be able to recreate that. I hope I'm horribly wrong. I was young when I got my first hand-me-down GameBoy right before the gameboy color came out. Those were "core memories" because we grew up in the gaming culture.

We've reached a point to where games are made to be grind fests and/or monetized to hell and back. Gaming is a business, and business ties to negative practices for profit's sakes. It doesn't mean they all do it though. There's some solid games out there but will likely take looking outside your comfort zone to find. Indie games have been filling this roll for me for a while now. Also trying out different genres may help. I wasn't a big RPG guy until more recently that I've been trying them out.

I actually stopped gaming, watching livestreams and gaming videos to persue my new found love of crafting. Asmon is kind of the gateway that makes me remember what I used to do a year ago. With that in mind: I prefer to have something eternal in my hands, that I can give to my kids later in life and they can pass it on further, instead of sitting infront of the computer and ultimately wasting away in a game or investing time into someone else's product, I rather create my own. That feeling of accomplishment hits different in real life than it does in gaming. That is what made me quit gaming. Though, even if I see it like that, I wouldn't go around judging others individually, simply because I know where they are coming from and I understand it. Just because it's nothing for me, doesn't mean that everyone else has to feel the same way.
