Oh my goodness I love the actual, proper chaotic good (or at least neutral good with chaotic leaning) vibes here. Especially considering recent circumstances you wrote about in the community post, this is an awesome treat to listen to. ^v^ I could be wrong, but my hypothesis is that the book is a tool to let the magic in the key, probably with the help of the user's mind and intent as the main way to handle the math, calculate where the portal needs to end up. If that's right then someone of unusual brilliance, probably enhanced with plenty of magic, and with enough information about the key's targeting logic, could use it without the book. There's probably a master copy or master press somewhere to make sure that the code can't be lost so easily, and there could be multiple spare copies as well, but none of that really affects the plan. Just me having fun with thinking. That key could have a lot of uses if aimed in a less malevolent direction, though. Disintegration or a determined and narrow enough ray of heat could pop that chain, let the door be shut and the key taken without the drama of disjoining the item, but that's possibly a kinda big ask of a spell if disintegration ended up being needed. Rock to Mud-ing the attachment point on the cellar side is less extreme, but not by much, and then there would still be the thing of sending the rest of the chain through the gate.... I guess alternate options depend on character abilities here, which I.... think is max 5th or 6th lv spells, though it COULD be as low as 4th. I think at least 5th based on some estimates though.
