I have a similar feeling and complaint even though my neighborhood is rather rural. I’m still not far enough out and away from traffic and noise pollution. I am aching to see stars.

When you think about, it's actually insane, if not insanity-making. The soul does not like the stars being obscured from it. We are meant to see the nightly heavens. And our bodies and imaginations respond to them. Sailors of old navigated by the stars, and the Polynesians before them. Other creatures, too, navigate by the stars -- such as birds. Humanity can make a difference for the better -- if we put our minds and hearts to it. Indeed, bird watching societies and ornithologists (scientists who study birds) are leading the way! Sad irony: there are satellite photos of different parts of the world at night. The darkest country of all is North Korea. You see almost no lights over that country. A shocking contrast to much of the rest of the world. Under NK"s dictatorship, the people are incredibly poor, and have very little reference to the world beyond their forced confinement. Their darkness is also not natural; but, for them, because they are not free to make a choice. I pray that, one day, they will be.

They are vital and filled with beauty, fun and delight. They lift our spirits.
