You guys 🙃 I seriously had no idea hand oils alter rock formations. We were given a speech by a guide at the beginning of the tour which did not include “do not touch formations” I can’t prove that to you but that’s the best I can do. Also I showed signs the entire time of which nothing stated do not touch at least from what I remember. I promise i would have never touched and done asmr in a cave if this information was readily given at the time of going in :( It was an honest mistake paired with lack of education at the cave and lack of my background knowledge on rock formations. I understand why it seems insensitive looking in. hurts my heart because I may have been ignorant in the fact formations can be altered by hand oil but that does not correlate to insensitivity. Y’all I just didn’t know, I wish I did, I’m sorry :(

Girllll don’t apologize. Ppl just wanna pick at you but deep down, don’t care. They won’t even be alive by the time the alterations happen. If you’d have known I doubt you’d have been in there still touching them. ❤️

Hey, it's okay! Touching general rocks around that aren't the specific formations that are being displayed and blocked off, which are the unique formations being preserved, in a human-run cave like this where they don't tell you not to, is perfectly fine! It's very good information to know in the future though, so you know to be much more careful when planning out something like this if you go to another cave that isn't maintained and isn't specifically set up as such (some cavess are explicitly set up as such so that other caves are not touched). As for your comment about "destroying nature", heck, stepping on a hill "destroys nature" with the grass being bent and dirt depressed by your weight; it's just part of living, being part of nature itself. Such warnings primarily started because people would climb over guiderails and damage rock formations, often spraypainting them or trying to chip off pieces for themselves, or worse; for caves that have already experienced human interaction, there's little use in trying to minimize human-generated change in how the formations will continue to form over the next hundreds of thousands of years going forward, because those changes have already been made long before you, which is why these sort of caves that have railed off areas but still let you get up close and touch the rock elsewhere, exist. Certainly, you can always try to minimize how you impact it, maybe instead use the unique acoustics of the caves to create ASMR echoes or something if even the concept that you might have disrupted how the rock will form *really* bothers you, but you shouldn't let it get to you too much for this particular cave exhibition trip.

hi! crystal hoarder here. most crystals are safe to handle. if you were to rub your hands all over them every day then you'd start to see any actual alterations. most of these appear to be druzy stalagmites n such which are often super durable. I haven't finished the video yet but you doing this one video won't do much noticeable change. and i'm sure you're not the only one touching these as you're on a path. in some spots where it's smooth and shiny that's literally from water erosion and constant human contact. I dunno how much this means but as someone who genuinely devotes so much time to these things i promise it's not as harmful as you feel it was. even if it was an untouched cave it's so little contact to do much

For those wondering what the signs say: 2:27 'As you look around, you will see many strange mineral formations on the ceiling, floor, and walls of the cave. These formations are made as water from the surface becomes slightly acidic as it makes its way into the void of the cave. The water dissolves and erodes the limestone rock, releasing calcite crystals that have been trapped in the limestone for millions of years. The water drops transport these calcite crystals into the cave where they are deposited throughout the caverns as stalactites, stalagmites, and on the walls and rocks as flowstone, which the Ice Cream Wall is a perfect example of. The mineral calcite is pure white, but as you can see on the Ice Cream Wall, many different colours are present. This is a result of other minerals and mud naturally staining the calcite crystals.' 2:47 'This compound stalagmite is a nice example of pure white calcite. Many people think it resembles the houses that the Smurfs lived in hence the name. The difference between stalagmites and stalactites is that stalagmites grow from the ground up and stalactites hang tight to the ceiling and grow down. Eventually if theh meet, a column is formed. If you look around you can see some examples of each right here.' 4:37 (shown clearer but I'll still put it down) 'This formation has stopped growing because calcite-rich water no longer drips onto it, so it is ok to gently touch the formation to see what calcite feels like. Formations grow extremely slow, and in this case it takes between 100-125 years to form one cubic inch of a calcite formation!' 6:39 'This column is a stunning example of pure calcite. The reason the formation seems to sparkle is because you are looking at calcite crystals, which reflect light. Columns form as a salactite and a stalagmite slowly grow together. Once the two formations touch they continue to grow wider and larger.' 8:16 'This column stands 40 feet tall and has a circumference of 25 feet. This is the largest formation in Lost World Caverns. It is estimated that this formation is 5 million years old.' 11:19 (shown clear as well) 'If you listen closely you can hear the sound of a stream. This stream flows down the right side of the room and disappears underneath the Snowy Chandelier. The underground course of the stream is unknown from this point until it eventually reappears on the surface at the largest spring in West Virginia, which is 8 miles away from Lost World Caverns.' 11:49 'For the adventurous type we offer cave expeditions that take you 1¼ mile further into the cave. Crawling, climbing, and scrambling over rocks, mud, and water awaits you deeper into the cave where there are no lights other than the one on the helmet we will provide you with. You will be led by our expert cave guides on a 4 hour trip through passages with names like The Squeeze Box, The Long Crawl, and The Birth Canal, so you can imagine the fun and adventure that waits for you on the wild cave expedition!' 12:48 (again.. same thing) 'This massive salactite is estimated to weigh 30 tons. This is the largest stalactite in the cave, and thought to be among thr largest compound stalactites ever discovered. As you can see, the Snowy Chandelier is directly above a large stalagmite bekkw, the formations grow ever closer to touching and then becoming a column.' 13:08 'In the late 1960s two teeth and a partial femur bone were discovered in the back section of the cave by members of the National Speleological Society. The bones were discovered to have belonged to the extinct species Arctodus pristinus, the short-faced cave bear. In February 2015 cave guide Kyle Mills climbed up to a high ledge and discovered a tooth, skull, femur, vertebrae, and other bones that were determined to belong to a second prehistoric cave bear. These bones were carbon dated to be 32,000 years old! If you want to learn more about the prehistoric cave bears found at Lost World Caverns, please visit our national history museum.' 13:35 'This stalagmite is approximately 500,000 years old and stands 28 feet tall with a base diameter of 2.5 feet and is 4 feet in diameter at the top. This formation is famous for being where in 1971 Bob Addis, a local cave explorer, secured a platform to the top of the War Club and set a Guinness World Record for 'stalagmite sitting' when he stayed on top for 15 days, 23 hours, and 22 minutes.' 14:53 (yet again lol) 'This formation has no name since it inspires many different images. Some people see a rabbit, some a ballerina. Use your imagination and see if you can come up with a name. We greatly appreciate your visit to Lost World Caverns and hope this was a unique experience for you.'

Bro every cave I’ve been too has numerous signs and tour guides saying not to touch the rocks it not only deteriorates the cave even further but is also dangerous to species of bats living inside the cave. Although it’s not as serious because it’s not deep inside the cave where little impact has been made it’s still disrespectful and ruins the beautiful atmosphere over time for future visitors.

This was a really cool concept! Another thing is I know hand oils can cause damage but I’m pretty sure nails would cause very minimal if any. As well as no guide or sign saying otherwise, so many people probably have touched the walls before. Either way I do think if guides are trying to preserve these places they should at least bar off or put up some sort of sign letting people know they aren’t to be touched. I don’t think it’s anyone who touched the walls fault if not properly informed. :)

honestly compared to the walkways and huge manmade systems in this cave, you're just another form of erosion like the water or anything else. i'm sure plenty of people touch the hell out of those stones, and honestly? they're just leaving marks on the history of the cave, like any other animal might. disturbing nature is one thing but just existing in it and interacting with it isn't something to be guilty over, unless it's actively harming another species.

I used to be a tour guide for a cave in PA and i can’t watch solely because my biggest rule was “DONT TOUCH THE ROCKS!!!” - that being said, it’s a rule because otherwise LOTS of people would touch it and the oil builds up over time the more people touch it. you didn’t know, and ultimately one person isn’t going to affect it drastically. however, the guides/leaders of the cave should have that rule, and if not then it’s on the owner.

Extremely original! I love it! There weren't any "no touching" signs. Ppl touch things in this cave all day everyday! If the ppl who look after the cave cared, there'd be signs. Just don't touch displays 🤷 it's only certain rock and things that will be effect by touching. It's rocks. Not living. Not scarce.

idk why ppl are saying you’re doing bad to the cave. it’s just like a wolf or an animal going into a cave and leaving a paw print. it’s literally just what would happen anyways. and the place didn’t say not to touch anything, meaning, they’re most probably fine with it. they also fitted the place with stairs, hoses, lights, rails, etc… i think someone touching a rock won’t collapse the whole cave in. and, just water sounds doesn’t mean there actually is growth in the cave. it could be manmade reservoirs of water connected to the, as mentioned before, hoses. they even put a red light to make it more ambient where it would look just fine not being there. i don’t think the cave owners really care about the cave being purely natural…
@nexSix66
@nexSix66 2 жыл бұрын
of course, i’m not accusing the owner of fake reservoirs of water.
