You don’t even need z. Since both the yellow and blue triangles have a height of x and the yellow triangles area is 1/2 that of the blue one. We can just put the base of the yellow triangle as y/2 and then instead of x-z we put x-y/2 and then it’s all in terms of x and y instead of another term z

That's very true! Love this alternative too. Depends what approach to take and how much you like fractions, I guess :)

you could have also looked at yellow triangle, 1/2ab=2 so ab=4 so the sides are either 2 and 2 or 1 and 4 but it cant be 2 and 2 as they arent equal so its 1 and 4, 4 squared is 16 and then take away the other areas

@@naoxi1 i dont know or care really because they arent in this specific question
@ASMRMaths6 ай бұрын
What Naoxi said is true, there are other values a and b could take in your explanation. But, given the simplicity of the numbers provided elsewhere it is a reasonable assumption to make of 1 and 4!

uhh 4 seems to work for x, so 4 * 4 = 16, 16 - 2 - 3 - 4 = 7
@user548406 ай бұрын
I overcomplicated this a lot but: 1/2 * sqrt17 * sqrt13 * sin(70.34617594) = 7cm^2 used pythagoras and simple trig rules for these values coulda done 4^2 - the other areas, but we don't know it's a square
