Great video. I learned so much. Recently I encountered the work of Anil Seth, a neuroscientist. For a long time I’ve been wondering what evidence there is that the mind/psyche even exists? Anil Seth basically says consciousness is a controlled hallucination based on the physical experience of our biology. When a person’s particular hallucination doesn’t match the experience of those around them well enough, then we call that psychosis. Hearing about how childhood infections contribute to schizophrenia development strongly resonates with this. Many neuro-immune disorders that are considered physical diseases (MS, Parkinson’s) can be triggered by viruses. I wonder if calling schizophrenia a mental illness makes researchers focus on the brain instead of the immune system. 1/3 of people not responding to antipsychotics sounds like a lot to me. Well anyway you’ve given me so much food for thought.

Super interesting comment. The world is definitely not as we perceive it to be, since all we can perceive is bounded within the 5 senses. It is interesting to think about the fact that there are many more senses that exist (e.g. whales have sonar communication, bats have a 6th sense of sonic waves, etc.) - each sense that exists in reality is another way to perceive reality - so in essence I agree that reality is just our "illusion" because we definitely cannot see all of it. Tis a crazy place, this world. I wonder why we're all here 😂 - but we all wonder that at some point. Interesting how we all have similar thoughts at similar points in life. It's like we are all reflections of the same entity - copies, or different expressions of the original human DNA. 🐉

Thank you. That's some deep stuff, Waffle. I've never thought that the mind/psyche may not exist, could you explain further please? That's wild what was said about reality being a hallucination. That's neat, what you said about schizophrenia being caused by problems with the immune system. 1/3 of people not responding to antipsychotic is a lot, I agree.

@@Simple5005 about the existence of the mind as an entity: it’s an unfalsifiable concept, meaning it can’t be proven or disproven that it exists. We can’t see it or quantify it, it’s not an organ. Which doesn’t mean it *doesn’t* exist, necessarily, just that there is no evidence to prove it does. And that’s fine if we’re talking about spirituality or religion or just using it as a concept. I talk about my mind to mean the collection of memories and traits and skills and thoughts that define and motivate me. It’s a good concept that we all use. But in terms of science or medicine, to me an unfalsifiable claim is not good enough-there’s a higher bar for proof. We are made of cells which are made of atoms-therefore everything that happens to us must be physics or chemistry. Endless constant countless actions and reactions. Hunger is our word for “my experience of my body releasing gherkin.” Fear is “my experience of my body releasing epinephrine.” Love is “my experience of my body releasing oxytocin.” And so on. I’m being simplistic but cheese and crackers I’ve already written a wall of text. I’m inclined to think that whatever we experience as consciousness, as psychological, is in fact a result of those endless cellular reactions. I would rather ask what’s wrong with the cells than what’s wrong with minds as it seems like a more direct path to drugs that work better and with less-bad side effects. But I am not a medical researcher. As always thanks for the videos, they make my day better.
