just a little scientific explanation for those of you that are confused about the experiments he is performing (coming from a neuroscience researcher): he did a small cranial window on the patient before he got woken up since brain surgeries require for the patient to be conscious. He injects the soap-like substance on the temples and the top part of the head because he wants to cover all the prefrontal cortex (basically the whole temporal lobe) that functions as the main top-down brain region with functions such as memory, behavioral and emotional control. This substance possibly creates a double effect of partial citotoxicity and neuronal membrane permeabilitation with the final outcome of quickly inactivating the brain region. He checks the vitals of the patient because the upper injection is close to the frontal premotor cortex that could affect motor functions required for survival. Afterwards, he injects a substance that can be quickly destabilized, which is a cocktail formed by the "Yamanaka factors": it's a adenoviral preparation carrying the genetic sequence of four transcription factors that are able to induce neuronal differentiation from progenitor cells. This way, he would force the newly lesioned prefrontal cortex to regenerate fast once the chip is inserted. Lastly, after the chip insertion which is done through the open cranial window of the patient, he uses a mixture of topical antibiotics and analgesic to facilitate the suture of the window using the welding tool. The critical part of the experiment is the induction of the lesion with the soap-like substance because although theoretically it should not be lethal (you should read about Phineas Gage if you are interested), it could induce potential citotoxic responses that lead to brain death. A tip on the syringe, if you pull the plunger back before you insert into the Tide Pod, then push the plunger down, you’ll be able to draw back the contents much easier. Coming from a paramedic, so not a doctor but still. Well done
