I love ASMRtists who understand that “ASMR for people with ADHD” doesn’t always mean fast and chaotic. That “ASMR for people with OCD” doesn’t always mean perfectly symmetrical or in any specific order. And that “ASMR for people with autism” doesn’t always mean childish. I’m not saying we don’t enjoy that kind of thing. Speaking as someone with ADHD and ASD, I do sometimes like fast ASMR. Symmetry is visually nice even if I don’t have OCD. And childish ASMR gives me a comforting nostalgic feeling. My point is just that it doesn’t ALWAYS have to be like that. I feel like so much “ASMR for ADHD” assumes we don’t have the attention span for anything slow. And a lot of “ASMR for autism” treats us like we’re children. Meanwhile I actually prefer slow ASMR most of the time. The fast, chaotic stuff can be really overstimulating if I’m not in the right mood for it. And slow hand movements and speech are what actually help calm my brain down and put me right to sleep. I also find it easier to relax and engage when someone is having a conversation with me that is interesting and where I feel I’m learning something, rather than feeling like I’m being babied. Even if it is nice sometimes, it doesn’t mean it’s always what we want. And I appreciate when people understand that and give us a variety of different content :)
