I haven’t talked to anyone else who felt the same way about the Barbie movie until I watch this video. It was like the movie said all the right key phrases (“you’re a fascist”, “that’s cultural appropriation”, “it’s impossible to be a woman”, etc) but then barely scratched the surface on what any of that truly means. Loved the ramble as always!

You’re the first person I’m hearing who shares similar thoughts about Barbie as me! I left the movie theatre with such mixed feelings. The “message” got entirely lost for me in the heavily convoluted plot and the only points that “landed” were super surface-level and have already been established in contemporary discourse many times. I also understand that Mattel’s role in the film dampened the potential nuance and depth due to commercial limitations but I was still disappointed. Obviously though the costuming and set design was incredible.

Specifally to address the facist comment in Barbie: there are groups of teens and even some adults use facist as a way to call out people or things they don't like online even when it has nothing to do with actual facism. I've seen it a lot in fanfiction/fandom spaces. It's terrible and frustrating but the people using that word so flippantly are usually looking for a fight which was supposed to be the inital personality of the daughter in the barbie movie. Bascially she's "too online." I enjoyed a lot of the Barbie movie but I also see/agree with a lot of the points you made. Your insight is always great to hear :)

Yes, I think that's right! I've heard it in real life and that was my takeaway. I was disappointed that the script writers included it as a joke, which could have been great if they had really picked it apart afterwards, sort of like you'd expect in hard-hitting stand-up -- but instead they glossed over it, which contributes to minimizing the importance of the word 🤷🏻‍♀️

Very much agree on your Barbie thoughts. I thought it tried to cover too much and then ultimately did it all in a really shallow way instead of honing in on something specific. Also it makes me laugh when people say it’s anti consumerist or capitalist cause it was literally funded by Mattel lol nothing groundbreaking would get past their rubber stamp

So glad to hear your thoughts on Barbie. I’m the only woman in my life that didn’t like it! Whilst there were parts that were fun, it just felt like they were trying to cover way too many things at once and could ultimately only make shallow commentary. The narrative didn’t feel cohesive, and I kind of left feeling… what was the point? With Mattel’s involvement and motivation to create another film franchise- you’re right, it felt like a cash grab and an opportunity to manipulate people into thinking Mattel is an ethical company because they are self aware.
@MauveASMR

Yes! The PR for Mattel is great on this one 😂 I was also confused on what the point was... for a movie being lauded as politically groundbreaking as this one, it's baffling to me that by the end of the story nothing material had changed

Mattel is a company that represents toys and entertainment and they should keep it that way. And if they’re listening to feedback on new toys to produce, then why don’t they actually make old lady dolls so girls can play Barbies with their grandmothers?

I think the problem with the Barbie is that it's being pedaled as a catch all: a blockbuster, a kids movie, a movie for adults, a satire, a social commentary, a feminist touchstone, one of the best movies of the year, a movie about a toy company that is self conscious that's it's about a toy company. When in reality it's impossible for a movie to be all those. The studios wanted it to be this all one "4 quadrants" picture that checks all the boxes a film can check but it feels convuluted because of it. In all honesty they shouldve dumbed it down instead of trying to approach serious topics because the self consiousness of it being a toy movie never leaves.

i thought the barbieland was an incredible display of what women truly want. to coexist with men with no fear, no judgement and no power dynamics, no feeling like we need to say sorry or are afraid to tell a man no. women don’t hate men, we just want to exist without the effects of hundreds of years of misogyny and sexism. i really loved the movie and got a lot from it about just being grateful for life even though it’s hard and it’s painful, especially for women, it is worth living.

Wait re Barbie - I thought the "lesson" from the scene where the the men were in-fighting was that women in the real world (us) shouldn't fight one another, because one of the reasons why WE aren't able to "take power back" within patriarchy is because of our own in-fighting
@Erin-ho8qu

@MauveASMR
@MauveASMR 11 ай бұрын
Yes, I think that's right! The Barbies created situations in which the Kens (who, in the reverse patriarchy = women) felt insecure and jealous. My question is why was that the solution, especially after the Barbies supposedly "learned and grew"? I wanted a solution that steered Barbieland in the direction of real equality, respect, and community, but instead it reverted back to an us vs. them mentality

Ahh yes, I also noticed there wasn't an equitable "happily ever after"! I liked the movie because I liked the little jokes and commentary sprinkled in throughout, and I thought the plotline (charitable term) was just a channel through which to give us those little giggles / commentary. But I totally agree that if we take the plot as written, the moral of the story doesn't ultimately advocate for any society that is more fair than patriarchy is in real life @@MauveASMR

Something that I found fault with in Barbie was the inconsistency in the portrayal of the Kens. They were used to represent men/ patriarchy in the real world but at other points they were used to represent women/ the effects of misogyny, also in the real world. It made for a very confused message in my eyes. I don't think the purpose of the film was misandrist at all, with the ending of the Kens not receiving proportional representation being meant to show how women, despite having equal rights, don't have equality yet in the real world. But I can see why it comes across as misandrist because the film itself is unsure of who the Kens are supposed to represent. I had really hoped Barbie would bring a more nuanced feminist perspective into the mainstream, but the writing was too lazy/ too inept to do so. And as a result of the ideology being so unclear, it has created this massive confusion where people think the film is trying to promote misandry. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts! It was very interesting to hear your review.
@MauveASMR

I hear you! I guess I mean... if certain aspects of the movie come off as misandrist, then it's somewhat misandrist regardless of its intention, right? I don't mean to diminish the way misogyny plays out in the real world all the time. But given that this movie takes place in an imagined world where literally ANYTHING can happen, it was deeply disappointing to me that its ending didn't model what it might be like for the Barbies and Kens to coexist, with equal power and mutual respect. Also I agree! The writing was too lazy to add anything helpful to the conversation. The movie was fun but failed to clearly express its view on feminism, equality, consumerism etc. Would be fine except it didn't want to just be fun, it wanted to be MEANINGFUL. And on that count it was a total mess

Feminism is originally a movement that empowers women and defends their rights. I for one was glad the original meaning was the one they went with in the movie. There is enough support for men in the world to be included in such movement.

Barbie thoughts: they weren't humans, they were dolls assigned to a sort-of matriarchal society. Barbies were handed their jobs and the ones that sold well in the real world were depicted a ssuccessful in their careers in BL. Barbies didn't force Kens to work beach, nor did they oppress them. Main Ken simply gained self-awareness in the real world and saw that men did more things than beach (and were also on a pedestal of patriarchy) and he thought - men do more so why can't I as a male doll? But he flubbed it. All the Ken's did and made Barbieland into an oppressive society. The ending was a more democratic society, but the fact Barbies didn't want to give Kens Supreme Court power I think was because they had just been victimized by the Kens and Ken's never had a job other than beach so they needed more experience (lower courts and/or seeing how well these ken jobs sold in the real world) before gaining a high position of power again. Anyway. I'm glad Barbie brought the concept of patriarchy to the masses. It's up to the newbie audience to dig deeper and see how much further we can reshape systems of power to benefit everyone. Barbie was the first step.
@MauveASMR
@MauveASMR 11 ай бұрын
I like your take, and I think it's very generous. I'd argue that the Barbies didn't directly oppress the Kens (whereas the Kens directly oppressed the Barbies), but the Barbies DID occupy every position of power and by doing so withheld power from the Kens. It's an interesting point that the Kens might have needed more experience... but the Barbies didn't have experience either. Doctor Barbie on the beach? I don't think she had a clue what she was doing 😂 We didn't see Lawyer Barbie use logic to try a case, just give a superficial closing argument. We didn't see Writer Barbie read her work or write it, just accept an award. Imo they were all pantomiming roles, Barbies and Kens alike 💜
