What is the inherent benefit of this type of massage? I see that it is very popular but it seems painful. The broken blood vessels under the skin surely cannot be pleasurable while getting treatment. I have only had a handful of professional massages before and my last was this fashion. Made me not want to have another. Thank you in advance for your reply.

From what I understand the thought is that the blood vessels break when they are too tight/restricted. By breaking them down, the body will build them up again. Think like when you're exercising the burn is lactic acid breaks down the muscle, so the body builds something stronger to replace what was broke. Gua sha shows increased blood flow to these areas for a day or two. Which is up for debate whether increased blood flow helps. But the though it better blood flow helps carry body waste products away. It's kind of like a manual hot hold compress to manipulate circulation.
