If you don't wash your hair or add oils to it you might want to actually brush it more often though, in medieval times they had the "100 strokes" method of brushing their hair to help spread the oils from their scalp to help moisturise and protect it, in dryer climates such as ancient egypt they would also use castor oils and ash on their hair.
