Hello French Whisperer. What can you tell me of the Forest Sauvage and why it is considered a place where magic resides? The park with the wind going through its trees in Antonioni's film Blow Up evoked for me the quality of mystery that I associate with The Forrest Sauvage. Thank You!

When I got into ASMR originally, it was about experiencing the 'tingle'. Which wore off after a couple of months. I got frustrated with all the silly role plays, clucks, clicks, scratches (and those disturbing ear-cleaning/licking videos!) I started searching for alternatives and came across people such as yourself who are actually incredibly interesting. Whether history, physics, maths, astronomy or even cookery, there are so many out there who clearly put much thought and effort into providing incredibly engaging, interesting yet relaxing subjects for us all to enjoy. Thank you so much!

I never really knew or understood the historical context that the story of King Arthur fit into! I was already familiar with the characters and variations, but knowing about the reality of the receding roman empire and the subsequent chaos really adds a lot of richness to the idea of this legend. I love it!
@sadaqah1175 жыл бұрын
Jack Whyte's A Dream of Eagles series is one of my favorite retellings of the legend of Arthur because it is told from a realist point of view. Every part showing how this legend could have been reality. From Excalibur being nothing more than the discovery of better metal working to Morgana LaFaye being both magical and scary because she was an independent blind woman. To Arthur's castle being nothing more than the well planned estate of a retired Roman general. Peace the result of a treaty forged through marriage between this retired general and the Saxon leader. Merlin being nothing more than Arthur's tutor...literacy and knowledge itself was magical.
@MrTofy19745 жыл бұрын
Have you ever read Stephen R. Lawhead's Pendragon Cycle? Also follows the legend of Arthur
@alanataylor11064 жыл бұрын
I like “The Mists Of Avalon.” Morgana LaFaye is Arthur’s half sister by Gorlois and she isn’t evil; although Arthur does end up thinking she tricked him, she was still trying to do the right thing. 😏

Yes! I learned French from this series when I arrived in the French Pyrenees. "Ouias, c'est pas faux" saw me safely through my first few months and somehow landed me my first job, followed shortly by "Le gras c'est la vie", "CUILLÈRE" and "Pas changer assiette pour fromage", which secured me a place in society as the quirky immigrant of the village 😀

I wonder if Alfred the Great was the actual role model for Arthur. As a Saxon King of Wessex he represented the last force fighting an army of Danish vikings that had raided, invaded and conquered about 70% of England, and he succesfully stopped them in 878 AD. The unification of England under a Saxon king and complete repulsion of the Danish invaders was achieved by his heirs in 954. But kings of the newly kingdom of Denmark managed to conquer England again, and this time completely, ruling it from 1016 to 1042. The book History of Britain was published in 1136, several decades after the Normans established their dynasty (and their lineage, although diluted, still runs in the monarchs of Great Britain). Maybe this book was fuelled by the fantasy or wish that all foreign (=non-Celtic) rulers would perish, be it Angles, Saxons, Juts, Danish vikings or Normans. But no Celtic dynasty would ever rule over England. Actually a Celtic king of England sounds much like a Welsh or Cornish fantasy, because people in Wales and Cornwall had kept stronger ties to their Celtic heritage and experienced few to none immigration by non-Celts. (At the same time, the Scottish and Irish ruled themselves, but not as unified states). Historically though there was probably no unified rule over England by a Celtic king or anyone else between the Roman's departure in the 400s and the Anglosaxon reign by 954. People from the British islands including the English clearly trace back to the Celts genetically. The Anglosaxons main heritage is the Germanic language of English - they contributed little to the gene pool of England but much to its history.
