Mer. is short for "Merkez" which means Centre. Gnays is not a Turkish word, turns out it is some sort of rock. "Gnays sütun taş" means a column like rock which is made from gnays. Atatürk is not from Erzurum but he's been there for an important congress. That column you checked out in Mersin is covered with black and white photos of Atatürk, must be a little symbol for the park since it's name is Atatürk Parkı. This video was really soothing, tnx! I was born in Erzurum but only lived there until I was 2 :D You can take a look at Ankara next time.
