This might sound strange and it's certainly off-topic and maybe because I'm sleep-deprived but I just want to tell you that I admire you. And let me tell you why. You know what you love. You have found what you love and you have found a way to include it in your life. Listening to you is such a joyful experience. I actually understood Einstein's theory. And you know what, it blew my mind, too. And I can tell you enjoy doing this, and I get enjoyment from listening to your excitement in understanding a topic you're passionate about. I wish more people were passionate about something too. Anything. A room full of passionate people can change the world. Or at the very least, your own world. And if there's one thing I'm sure about is that those who love, and who love what they do, just make the world better. In every sense. They succeed. I love watching people succeed. You win at life, man. So when you apologized at 28:25 for the "long-winded" explanation, and later said it was very cool for you and enlightening, which is why you did it, it kind of bummed me out, man. Because I do that too, because when I'm on a roll and I start rambling about something I'm very interested in, sometimes I'm talking about it to the wrong person and I see their eyes just glaze over me, a universal sign of boredom. Or maybe they tell me to be quiet, lol. And so I quickly wrap it up and apologize for my rambling. And if that's happened to you, I'm sorry. But thanks again for your videos. I always try to be brief but end up writing paragraphs. I always get the feeling I annoy people when I do this. :P

I was never a good math. Once I understood its simplistic and formulaic continuum. I could work with it. I have a son who does math in in his head. He is ADD. ‘Inattentive type’. But he understands algorithms. Formulaic functions. And patterns in math intuitively. He does not need to write down formula. He solves formulas in his head. Without writing it down. It is amazing. I think there is a correlation between understanding and knowledge that can exceed some or our paradigms on what is intelligence.

It's interesting that the mathematical reasoning behind the theory is the prime factor in your understanding, whereas for me the physical model is the more important. Of course the mathematics are the more fundamental explanation. But it's cool to see how different minds work and what differing perspectives on life they take.

To me, in watching this video, you weren't looking for 'reasons ', because the reasons you stated were perfectly practical reasons we can't travel at the speed of light (for me they are). I think you were looking for 'proof'. For you, it seems that Math is your belief and once you saw the restriction illustrated through mathematical reasoning it was more than enough for you to stop looking. Just my opinion. As an aside, I am always deep in thought about the same topics you are thinking of. It has always been my belief that 'imagination' is the key to understanding, and I think that is what Einstein held above everyone else, his ability to daydream and wander with his mind to construct realities we can only dream of and read about in his papers. I really think the key to progressing is to work on massaging our imagination, to take that train ride as Einstein would frequently do. His visuals really allowed him to 'see' his solutions. Love the video!

As for your requests, for sure I plan on doing a lot more on infinity and the next video in this set is about gravity and acceleration - it won't be out until the summer though, I need to get some prep work done for it, but I promise it will be worth the wait. It's very much related to what I learned during this period and how it relates to the prescription of Time. As for more gaming videos, for sure i'll get some more done. If I understand you correctly, then, we cannot travel at the speed of light because W (the amount of energy necessary for any amount of mass to be accelerated to the speed of light) grows infinite? I get that, but could you explain why the mass of an object traveling at the speed of light would become infinitely large as well? Do you have a formula that we can fill in the amount of energy necessitated that gives us the resulting mass? I really want to understand, what you are talking about is so interesting. ^^

That is correct regarding energy. As for the mass, it's for the same reason as for energy, we end up getting a division by zero hence infinity. As for the formulas, I believe the ones you want are in Einstein's paper(s) that I've linked in the description of the video, the one that i'm showing in the video. The information is a mind twist that's for sure and I don't fully understand all the aspects, I was just able to learn enough of it to satisfy my curiosity and allow me to move on to my next goal, to have a better grasp and understanding of time. Just so you know, I do have a follow-up video lined up to do about this, about time. I should be able to get it done some time during the summer, just have to dig up a few papers and read a couple of chapters for review, I want to make sure I cover all the basis.

+Woodshatter OMG! I love Cowboy Bebop, I don't even know how many times I've watched it now. Love Samurai Champloo, Kids on the Slope, and wow what a treat Space Dandy was. For sure I plan on doing at least one video, most likely a set of videos on animation. The odds are that I'll probably do at least one on TV shows and one on Movies, and probably breakdown at least one of each. I consider animated works to be some of the greatest works of all time, some of the most intricate, and definitely in my world must watches. I'll share this for now, my favorite Cowboy Bebop episode, if I had to choose one, is 320, "Pierrot le Fou". Simply WOW! I my opinion it contains the greatest animated sequence of all time, the part where Jet tells us Mad Pierrot history. Wow! How about you? Favorite show, favorite movie, if you had to pick one? Or even top 5?

Great and very informative video. Seeing how you have a love for mathematics and comics you should find a copy of Einstein for Beginners. Published 1978, text by Joe Schwartz and illustrated by Michael McGuinness. This book has about 170 pages and is awesome yet a little hard to grasp for me on a few levels. I believe in one of the steps we have a square root, and in the Real Number Set, we can not take the square root of a negative number so it is a restriction from that end as well... someone correct me if i am wrong on this please... that said, the question remains open in my mind, is it possible to go beyond the speed of light if we allow for complex (imaginary) or other yet not understood number sets, are these the equivalent of wormholes?

Probably a dumb question, but why can't velocity equal more than the speed of light, thereby nullifying the division by zero state? I understand the progressive nature of velocity and that it would seem to necessarily equal c at one point in order to go beyond it, but wouldn't it be mathematically possible? Thanks.

If I remember correctly, because then we would have a negative number, which is okay to deal with when squaring it but becomes an issue when taking the square root of it (even root of it).... and by the way, there is no such thing as a dumb question, seriously. The greatest ideas and inventions in the world have come from the simplest questions and concepts. Simple questions are the mortar that bind everything together.

I postulate that we can travel at twice the speed of light. If one spaceship is going light speed and another is going light speed what happens if they happen to collide in space? Hypothetically we have a collision speed of 2x light speed. Then again I could be wrong.

You comment toward the end that quantum physics is easier to understand in Swahili... I have a Kenyan neighbor who explained a few weeks ago that Swahili was basically a combo of ancient Greek and ancient Arabic. So I wonder if quantum physics would be easier to understand in those languages too.

Question: if V is higher then C, u would be dividing by a negative value which is possible in maths. Would that mean u are going back in time in the equations, theoretically speaking? Suppose u dont cross that barrier but already started at higher then C speed.

It's an interesting thought experiment, but I believe in a previous step, if we have V higher than C, then we will be taking the square root of a negative number, which doesn't have a solution in the Real Number Set, so V can not be greater than C. That said, I would love to know what happens if we step outside of the Real Number Set, physically that is. Maybe that's when we travel back in time, possibly as an electromagnetic pulse?!? One can dream :)

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe these equations were set up specifically so that there would be an asymptotic bound as v approaches c. Ergo, it's not really a reason WHY a massive body, since the equations were an attempt to explain observable phenomena. But enough from the peanut gallery; great video.

Actually, and I don't know if you know this, but it's theorized(THEORIZED) we could travel FTL. You should look into the "Alcubierre drive". It's basically the warp drive; warp the universe instead of just pushing yourself faster

I am a bit lost with this topic but LOVED it. What I think I learnt was, if v>c then you could write out that function. So you could travel faster then the speed of light or indeed slower than the speed of light? But just not at the exact speed? Um. and this made my brain hurt...... In a lot of cases, the 1 represents 100% of something. So for example, if you ate half the apple it would be equal to eating 50% of the apple which would mean that 1 - 0.5 = 0.5 of the apple is left. I like apples :)

According to the math, I think that's one of the problems, the others being that we would need an infinite amount of energy, and the length of any object would shrink down to zero while it's mass would become infinite.

If we traveled at the speed of light our mass would become infinite (i.e. more than than mass of the universe). As far as the math is concerned, nothing that has mass can travel at the speed of light. Now if we were massless beings, made be just made up of energy, then we could travel at the speed of light.

I don't think we can really since everything in the universe is in motion. WE can freeze things to near absolute zero but that doesn't stop their motion, i.e. rotation around the earth, around the sun, around the galaxy, shooting across the universe. Also keep in mind that everything has a vibration.

+bellaaneke It's not a stupid question. In the equations "c" represents the speed of light so that doesn't change. "v" is the speed of the object and that can change but if "v" equals "c" then in the equations we get a division by zero, and we can't do that in math so based on the math that we know we can not travel at the speed of light - or more than the speed of light - so far anyway :)

Love the video, however, I'd just like to point out that equations are just ways for us to describe the mechanisms of the universe in terms (numbers) we can understand. So, it's not entirely accurate to say that the division by zero is the REASON that nothing can travel at the speed of light, it's just a way of describing the problem that arises. Equations and numbers DESCRIBE real world phenomena, they don't GOVERN it. So, it's more accurate to say that based on Einstein's theoretical model of relativity, superluminal speeds are impossible, but it's not "because" there's a 0 in the denominator.

I think you should be able to, but you would need to either compress the space between particles, or move each particle individually at the same time to initiate the mechanic of kinetic energy without pushing the object. You can also emulate it by just moving the particles around the person instead of the person. Math is broken, so the whole "zero" thing is just Math's holes. I wouldn't rely on that as proof. Also, particles smaller than light should move faster than it, so I think Einstein was a bit lost.
