I completely agree with Joker. I did not care for the first movie and I don't get the praise. As a movie itself, I think it's okay. It looks great don't get me wrong but I felt the very element of Joker from the comics was missing. I say this as a massive comic Batman fan. I think Joker works the best as the antithesis of Batman's nature and strangely enough an almost kinship that Batman doesn't want to admit. However, the Joker movie itself didn't feel like Joker at all to me. One thing about Joker is his scary intelligence and I didn't feel a hint of that in the movie. But that's just me.

I don’t think Joker is self indulging, I think you’re just picking up on the Taxi Driver inspiration which obviously had a much more complex character story. Joker holds its own but it’s hard to make distance from its inspiration for some.
