a brush is used to get out big knots/tangles in the hair for everyday use and general untangling. a comb is used for many things besides untangling, as the teeth are too small and close together for untangled, dry hair. combs are great for combing through wet or fine hair to smooth it and do some final detangles, as well as parting the hair, smoothing out sections while styling, and lining up hair for cutting.

DUDE!! SLOTH!! I'd LOVE to do your hair. Brush it to get most of the knots or snags out; comb it to get it really smooth; wash it and dry it with a towel (no hair dryers allowed). Then brush and comb again.
