Something to keep in mind if you're going to use an espit stove indoor, is that those fuel tablets can have some pretty nasty chemicals in them, so you should try to use them in a well ventilated area. Great vid Lloyd, between you and Steve1989MREInfo I get plenty of ration content on youtube.

Forgive my ignorance but why do they provide so much unhealthy food for our soldiers? Most MRE items are loaded with refined carbs and sugar. Why don't they include healthy nuts such as pecans or walnuts? Instead of chocolate candy bars why not beef jerky which is a good source of protein? I generally don't bring up nutrition, in fact I am a junk food addict, but in this case it matters when we are dealing with servicemen who need to be in top shape.

I've always wondered that too, but I think that there are some mres that have trail mix or craisins. The reason for the unhealthy carbs and sugar, it's probably so that the body can digest it very quickly for an energy boost, while protein and fats digest a bit slower. it probably also provides a morale boost so the soldiers don't feel like they are eating too badly. also these are supposed to be used when there is no other food like front line cooks around so they would probably exercise it off pretty quick.

Veteran, here. Ok...so it's bcz food scientists long ago determined that certain foods preserve much better than others, and provide more of a nutrient dense energy base. They also have to choose low allergen foods. Amazing amounts of vitamin fortification is added to mre's before packaging. Salt. Sugar. (Not chemical preservatives.) So....Nuts, fruits, ect., are highly volatile. Nut oils go rancid fast, even when packaged. Fruit molds, even when dehydrated. They can be allergens. A LOT of work goes into mre's. The bread and crackers Lloyd opened up, is very carefully formulated to include fiber while inhibiting mold. Lastly, we soldiers need a GOBSTOP of calories per bite when deployed or in the field. So all of the food is coordinated to provide gigantic amounts of vitamins and calories, while trying to taste good. Tough job. You can trust that the govt doesn't want anything happening to the soldiers, either. It is well recognized that nutrition is crucial. The meals taste pretty good. (Except brownies.) But that's another story. Hope that helps.

Refined carbs and sugar have the most densely packed energy. MREs are not about nutrition, they are about getting the most amount of energy into the smallest amount of space and really just meant to be eaten in emergency scenarios. Obviously when they are on-base they have cooks who make them properly nutritional meals.
