There’s a product called Iron Off that is a paste and comes in a red and white tube. You turn the iron on, squeeze out about a quarter size on an old rag and scrub it over the paste. It kinda smells like baking cookies, but you just iron in circles over the rag until the bottom looks clean, then you iron over a clean rag to get the oil off the bottom. The paste will leave a grease stain if you don’t get it all off.

About the iron. This waterless iron is commonplace in Brasil (I'd assume most of Latin America, hence the plug). They're still manufactured but I do prefer the style that vaporises water.
