'Footy' can be used to describe rugby, but is most commonly used as the short term for Australian Rules Football (AFL) which is another completely different sport. you could be hearing people talking about either, but it's most likely AFL. :)

It’s actually state dependent. NSW, QLD and ACT will more likely be League, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania more likely to be AFL. Northern Territory is evenly divided between League, AFL and union by popularity ( a lot of ex pats from other states and countries).

I love playing rugby league and watching it where as in union I only like playing but not really watching it unless it’s a team I associate with. Union is a great game but can be boring to watch in my opinion due to long break down re-dos and referee stoppages. That’s just my opinion and apologies if any one is offended.
