The purpose of trademark law is to prevent brand confusion among consumers. It's to protect consumers from being misled. If the business is competing in the same industry *and* the logo looks similar enough to the plaintiff's trademark so that it may cause confusion among consumers *then* they have a valid case. Unfortunately this type of trademark bullying has become commonplace with the IP industry ramping up its protectionist mindset. As it can cost millions to fight a case in court most of the time the small business just caves in to such bullying, sad to say.
