Hello! Welcome to my second teaching you about genetics video! It's been a super long time since I did one of these so I thought it was time for another. In this video, I explain a bunch of genetics concepts like dominance/recessive traits, X-linked traits, and epigenetics and tell you how a child can have 3 parents, fish can have clear blood, lactose tolerance is a mutation, sickle cell anemia is more prevalent in Africa, and men are more likely to be colorblind! I'm happy to have you here!

As a ninth grader who happened to stumble across your content about a couple weeks ago, I really appreciate this video. I struggle specifically with biology, and you've explained everything in a way I've been able to understand. I love your style of content, and the way I can fall asleep and wake up feeling that much smarter. I enjoy learning, and I enjoy ASMR. Thank you for putting these two things together. Thank you for providing us with your awesome content, and thank you KZbin algorithm for recommending me this asmrtist. You are incredibly underrated. I believe you'll be big one day. You can bet I'll be here the entire journey. Keep doing what you do : )

Another interesting cat fact, while calico cats are always female, orange cats are normally always male! This is because the gene for orange, as stated, is on the X chromosome. Male cats only need one of these genes to be orange, while females would need two to be orange ☺️

About the calico cats you could add that there are in fact some male calico cats (fewer than 1%) but those have a genetic disorder: They have 3 sex chromosomes: XXY (in humans this is called Klinefelter syndrome). Those male cats are, however, all sterile. On the other hand, 80% of all orange cats are male; the orange colour gene is recessive, so female cats only can be orange if they have it in both X chromosomes.
@pamelaasmr
@pamelaasmr Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I wasn’t even thinking about Kleinfelter syndrome in cats. I guess Turner syndrome female cats also couldn’t be calico

This was so soothing and relaxing but also really, really interesting. I learned loads! The only ASMR video I've come across like it. It definitely watch more like this, with interesting facts delivered in a soothing way! Just a note on the light skin/dark skin part. I'm pretty sure its the other way around. Early humans originated in Africa and dark skin was the standard for obvious reasons. Light skin only developed as humans emigrated north, where daily sunlight levels were much lower, and so vitamin D absorption became a problem. Lighter skin allows for more vit D absorption and so became a genetic advantage. I'm not an expert, lol, but I think thats the case.
@pamelaasmr
@pamelaasmr Жыл бұрын
Thank you!! I’m pretty sure it’s actually a mix between the two. The earliest humans didn’t have either extreme of skin color but lighter and darker skin evolved based on latitude

On the topic of defective genes, my dad knows this family that has a genetic disease so rare it’s named after the family. Every one born to the family gets it and they all die before they hit 60, I believe it is. On the topic of sickle-sell, I suspect that it occurs at higher rates in Africans and their decedents due to the fact that the African genomes mutants faster which I suspect is due to higher exposure to solar radiation, which is known to cause cellular mutations. As for Chimera Syndrome, I remember that from an episode of House back in the day. Somewhat on the subject of epigenetics, I have long believed that there is something to Astrology. Not that the stars dictate our futures, but the personality traits that go along with the different signs, to whatever degree they are accurate, could be caused by fluctuations in solar radiation throughout the year, so depending on when you were gestating, you were subjected to a different level than someone conceived six months later. I literally just watched something about the clear blooded fish, and yes, they are in Antarctica. The fish there have devolved to have clear blood. While this video in no way is going to help me sleep, I find genetics fascinating.

The thing about women with hemophilia raises some questions ... it seems the more we rely on medicine and technology, the more hereditary diseases prevail and get passed down through the generations. That could also mean that, should we ever encounter an alien species, they were possibly technologically extremely advanced but unable to even survive without their technology.
