After watching back, I wouldn’t film with the settings that create such a blur like at 13:47 because I can see how that would be annoying on your eyes! I've played with it some more, and I'm feeling happy with settings that are somewhere in the middle of the "before" and "after" that I showed (so this video now feels so silly to post!) but I think we can strike the right balance that still feels natural with a better visual image overall

generally, the sharpest settings are about 2 stops from open. Sigma makes heckin good lenses though. i use the 50mm 1.4 for weddings and stuff. 2.8 to 3.2 will give you the best balance of depth of field and sharpness.

Make sure to also check, how light triggers (flashlights) look with the new lens. Some lens flares can be very nice .. other ones might be disturbing.

After watching the video, I agree f1.6 is proabably a bit too shallow with the depth of field. f2 or f2.8 might be a good middle ground. I have to say I never noticed any noise in your videos. The KZbin compression hides it pretty well. Have you ever thought of using a higher framerate? 60fps can look very lifelike compared to 25fps. Anyways I am perfectly happy with how your videos look. The quality is already very good. Sound is also great (which imo is even more important).

Whatever you think about the "imperfection of your skin", please forget very quickly, because the opposite is true.💚 My opinion is to keep the new lens as the image quality is better in low light. And they do have their very own atmosphere which can be really cozy and somehow "close" (not quite intimite - this would be too much but... its like sitting with friends in blurry light on a Friday evening and talking weird stuff but feeling just comfortable and safe). Maybe you can create even some sort of high quality lo-fi - hehe. Anyway. To try some iPhone-stuff again would be really nice.

Sigma lenses are so good for versatility! M50 was my first camera body and I paired it with the sigma 50mm for some beautiful results. You can always bump your shutter speed up a little to keep the iso at 100 and you will lose some of that noise in the back. Great video! Love seeing people get excited with new photo gear 😊

I think what we might really need is a camera test with all your lights! At least that is what I am into the most. I do really love the extreme depth of field focus with moving your hands close. Its something I like a lot in other people's videos. Its very relaxing to me. But I definitely am curious if the higher quality will do something to the light triggers that I adore.

Cameraman here. So basically the lower the number for the aperture (after the f) is, the bigger the iris of your lens is. This means it can take in more light, thus giving you the opportunity to have less lighting in the room. A lower aperture number also gives you more depth of field, meaning that the focus is more critical. This is how you background gets more blurry. Turning the aperture down, so the number up (confusing, i know) gives the opposite effect. You would need more light but the background will be more in focus. The ISO is a digital boost to your camera's lightsensor. It digitally enhances the light intake of the camera and gives you the opportunity to work with a lower aperture in lower light conditions. However, since it's boosting it digitally, this will always result in some loss of quality of your picture. Therefore I would always suggest keeping this setting as low as possible within the reach of the vibe you're going for and the amount of lighting you have available. Lastly I would suggest for you to check your shutterspeed. I see that there were some horizontal lines forming on screen. This is due to the shutterspeed of your camera and your lights not being in sync with eachother. Usually in Europe it's best to keep it at 50 or a multiplication of that. She already films at 25fps though. If there's any flickering I'd just get flicker-free lamps. That way she could also use 30fps or even 60fps. Also I think, if she sets the shutter to 1/100s, this can mitigate 50Hz-lamp-flickering even when filming at 30fps or 60fps. (For 30fps 1/50s would also be an option.)

Thank you so much for the info. Lots to learn still clearly :) Yes, I was filming at a shutter speed of 50 because of my lighting and being in Europe. If I switch to the US settings and film at anything else, they flicker a lot! Could try adjusting the brightness next time.

Cameraman's advice is sound, can support all those statements and explanations (love people who state something as well as explain it). I have the same Sigma 16 for SONY and I love the low light performance on it. Granted, I normally use apereture priority auto settings (i.e. you set the aperture, but the camera sets ISO and shutter itself) because I am more into photos on the go, meaning it is generaly a matter of changing the lens and getting the shot than fiddling with camera settings and missing the opportunity).

I really love seeing the effort you put in the background, so too blurry would ruin it a bit, but with the new lense I can definitely see you I'm better detail and I love the slow focus! Love the new lens! I like what it did with the background but also how it allows the highlights (e.g. hair, whites) to pop and stops the shadows from being as muddy. Also actually really liked how it looked with the darker room lights.

Great lens to upgrad too! Will definitely be sharper and brighter, but make sure to watch out for the shallower depth of field (meaning it will be easier to be out of focus, because essentially the width of the focus plane from the camera gets smaller)

I liked the video because it shows the process of making your videos and moving your channel forward. I liked the overall look of the new lens and the options it gives you when filming. Your current equipment puts out really nice video, but the image quality is brighter and sharper with the new lens. I love the difference with the extreme close-ups -- may come in handy in your eye doctor or dermatologist videos. I also focused on your hair and I can see more detail.

Hi Abby , the Sigma lens is called "faster" because at f/1.4 it lets more light into the iris than the other lens. It gives you more flexibility in low light situations, so more control. The soft focus is a by-product of the wide aperture as it shortens the depth of field. A small f-stop (higher number f/3.5 - f/16) increases the depth of field. I think it's a good choice for creativity but you've just scratched the surface here. Keep up the great videos!

I don't know what it is about your tech videos, but they're so fun to watch. Maybe it's because they're a mix of asmr and education? I remember one of the first videos I watched being a video where you were talking about your new camera, I think. Testing out light triggers and such. Anyway, I think your content is lovely with and without the new lens. The sounds and visuals of your videos are already on point imo, but you should do whatever you think would make your channel better! ^_^

Part of determining if this new lens is a good "fit" for your channel will have to take into account the processing that KZbin applies. During production and editing, you will get to appreciate some subtler improvements that simply may not make it past KZbin compression and the lower bit-rates that some may be limited to when watching. I don't know if the "1080p Premium HD" mode is still limited to KZbin Premium subscribers. Even in that mode though, your background still has noticeable "posterization" (i.e. banding) which is just a limit of KZbin processing and this may be far more noticeable than any image noise you get rid of by using the faster lens. However, being able to capture more light will always give more more creative control and you might find this enough of a benefit to justify the purchase. Keep up the great work!

Personally i really do like the old lens's faster autofocus and ability to focus better on two planes (not a big fan of the blurry brush when it's up close) but i can see both options making good videos! Either way whatever you're comfortable with is fine

The Sigma 16 is a great lens. Excellent quality for the price. I think it looks good in your case as well. It doesn’t look like the M50 autofocus can keep up with depth of field below f/2.0. It needs to stay locked to your eye and it’s not doing it. I don’t think you need the DoF to be that shallow though, so it’s still a worthwhile upgrade even without using the full aperture range. Low-light noise isn’t going to get much better without upgrading the camera body.

Definitely your decision in the end but the quality is obvious much better and it lets you have greater control of your lighting, especially in dark environments. I always found having the extra room with the f-stop is invaluable. Even if you end up using higher values than it can do, having it there is a nice buffer.

You have the option to use the lower aperture when you want to do something a little more artsy with the super thin depth of field but in your normal work I'm not sure stopping it down all the way is as good thing. but it is another tool in the toolbox It seems to hunt and miss focus a little especially with thin DoF. The clarity and sharpness is much improved with the Sigma . All in all it's a better look and more options for getting the shot you want.

The background blur effect is called "bokeh" and the effect is increased the more you open the aperture. So at your max aperture of 1.4 will give you a nice background blur effect. Also if you want to reduce noise in the video then try and keep your iso as low as possible... ideally 100 iso as long as you have enough light...which from your test you didn't seem to have an issue. If your video framerate is 30fps then you would want a shutter speed of double that as a rule of thumb...so 1/60th, that should eliminate any light flicker...also go manual mode for full control. Stick with the sigma lens it is far better than the stock. Can't wait to see your next ASMR results 😀

You go with the setting you like best, but the blurred background works for focusing on what you are doing. The fingers closeup with you blurred would be good for dreaming role play videos maybe.

I think you should keep it :)) but I don’t think you should use an aperture les than 2.0, you can not focus your face without get your nose or neck blurry. I usually use 2 - 2.2 in similar situations :))

The one fairly makor dislike i have for the new lens other than the super blur is that your background "fuzz/pixellation effect" seems to move around a lot more now when you do. It does move on the old lens but looks to be a lot more stable generally compared to the constant wave like effect following your head around on the new one

The autofocus is definitely slower. Not sure if anyone else picked up on this or if it's just me, but your face looked fine but your hair was fuzzed out with the background a little bit with the low ISO. I'm sure with the right settings you can fix that though.

I know nothing about cameras, so maybe this was a settings issue, but I noticed with the new lense if you shifted backwards too far, your face went out of focus - like at 12:43. I found it happened a lot while you were playing with the aperture, and it was a little hard on the eyes

The color saturation levels are more or less the same, but 16mm brings the brightness up. If only I had more mental energy today I'd do a deep dive assessment and have much more helpful observations ... but I hope you're happy with the results of your investment. :)

The 1.4 f stop is so shallow a depth of field that sometimes one hand is blurry when they’re both up front eg the mushroom. I wouldn’t use that low a depth of field, you could achieve just about as good an effect without being so severe

Definitely have a little mess around with the settings - you're getting a bit more frame stutter - it's obvious with your lips and eye lids. Experiment which highest F number gives you the best video performance at your room brightness. Increasing the "F-stop" decreases background blur. I have the Mk 1 with zoom lenses from 11-600mm, so I'm more than happy to assist.
