So I am a PGA student and I’ve been on a few golf teams, so I’m gonna rate my main man Matty’s performance here (apologies for all the nuances🤣) Uniform part was fairly accurate, most schools where I’m from (FL) wear shorts because it’s so hot out, shoes aren’t provided but ya know how Matty is with shoes, he’s gotta throw em in the vid Some practices you are explicitly on the range and some you go out and play. I would say that most of the on-course practices would be before tournaments, for the coach to see their scores and how they are playing to seed them for events. At the schools I used to play at, we took 5 players, and we had about 8-12 kids on the team, so everyone would go out to play, and the best 5 scores would ply in the event. Like a qualifier Players have their own warmup method. High level players won’t ever really warm up only using a driver, but will work their way up the bag. Never had a coach that specifically said “don’t warm up with irons” It is very important to clean your clubs! The grooves in your irons and wedges create backspin on the golf ball, so if there’s anything in them like dirt or grass it will result in a worse strike and no spin. While what he is saying is accurate, the coach himself won’t clean the player’s clubs for them, that’s all up to the player Matty for the love of Jesus Christ himself use the wire brush sparingly!! And definitely not on a driver face! Use the soft brush and a towel, and sometimes if there’s a lot of dirt use water to help clean it, and then towel it off As much as golf is an individual sport, in school the team aspect is very important! I never had a coach say to look for other players nuances, you kinda just pick up on them as you get to know your teammates. But having each other’s back is one of the most important things about being a part of a team One thing that was super off was actively coaching them on the golf course. That is not very good. Good Coaches will give players space on the golf course and especially not teach them in front of the other players, basically interrupting their play. This is where the individual aspect of golf comes in. There are two different modes when you’re a golfer: course golf and range golf. Range golf is when you work on all your fundamentals, course golf is when you just go out there to play. You don’t want to be coaching them during their ‘play’ mode, because that’s when players just go off of pure instinct. You fine-tune all of those misses on the range so they perform better on the course in future I also noticed that Coach Matty didn’t know the first hole they played was a par 4?? Lmao you would know the yardages of the holes beforehand as a coach Ok so my verdict is: B- I think Coach Matty would be an all right middle school coach, but you have absolutely no shot coaching a high school squad. The way that he’s positive is definitely one of his best traits, but he definitely needs to shut up on the course 😅🤣 i’d say the main thing he needs to work on is not following his players like a hawk and just letting them be autonomous, and obviously it’s OK if you check up on them once every couple holes but not every shot every hole. Definitely an entertaining video!
