Every day, people all over the world post videos of themselves doing everything from slurp-ily eating Ramen, to crinkling paper, to playing Minecraft while whispering about the world that they’re exploring. In 2022 alone, videos related to ASMR received over 90 BILLION views on KZbin.
In this episode, MatPat searches for answers to all of his burning ASMR questions. Like, can he find the first ever ASMR video? What is actually happening in the brain when people experience ASMR? And can he finally feel the brain tingles?

Massageclips started in May 2007. We intended to put up massage videos for instruction purposes, but what happened next was quite amazing. The majority of comments centered around Lita's voice and the subtle sounds that were recorded as a result of her giving the massage. The concept of ASMR had not yet been introduced, but we were accidentally at the forefront of what is now the ASMR community. Massageclips grew rapidly based on the relaxing and tlngly effects of this.

Does anyone remember who the first ASMR'tist was that gave them tingles? For me it was Ppomo ASMR doing whispered Japanese trigger words. Someone in her comments suggested we close our eyes and imagine she's behind us, and suddenly, it was like someone was sweeping a feather up and down my spine. It was borderline overwhelming. Have you ever held the corner of a sheet of paper next to the outer corner of one of your eyes, and felt an intense tingling sensation on that side of your face? Imagine that all over your spine and brain stem. That's the tingles.
