Don't feel wrong if you're in the minority, the purpose isn't about finding an object correct answer. Some people believe when you pull the lever, you are actively making the choice to end a persons life, and that in itself is ethically worse than letting 5 people die to inaction. Though you may believe in saving the most lives you can, if instead the question was, "If you could stop a trolley from killing 5 people by pushing someone infront if it, would you?" You might be more likely to say no to this, yet at it's root, it's the same question. Of course, these are all hypotheticals and can't be translated to real life, but it is a good thought experiment for opening yourself up to other perspectives questioning your own sense of morality.

Was looking for this comment. When this topic comes up people like to entirely simply out the leaver and any agency or responsibility for their actions. And say it’s just choose an outcome. Pulling the leaver is murder, not pulling it is to be a bystander. Not using "murder" as a loaded term, but it is taking a life and it is not in self defense, nor is it an accident, its weather or not the ends justify the means. (just think the gravity of the situation presented is so easily glossed over by so many, and its treated as a maths problem instead of really trying to think about the ethics of the presented situation)

I think the reason there will always be people that dont pull the lever might be determinism (not sure if thats the right term?) but essentially not interfering with the trolley no matter whats happening. Because without your interference there is a clear cut path and they might think it should stay the way God/the Universe/Fate or whatever there is determined.
@Diopp.7 ай бұрын
Nope, simply when YOU pull the lever YOU are KILLING someone, where if the train wouldve just killed those 5 people it had nothing to be with you. So essentially the traditional philosophycal questions is Would you rather kill someone or let 5 people be killed?

Fate is more like what Vikings believed. They were not afraid of death as they believed their deaths was already fated. Pulling the lever might be in their fate and dying. The point in fate is you can’t change it anyways so you shouldn’t be afraid.

I think there was some misunderstanding of why people wouldn’t pull the leaver even early on. I think it’s a misreading of the situation to remove your agency and frame it as "save 5 or save 1". It’s not framed as you having two choices, but rather as having one choice. The leaver is you actively making a choice and taking a life. If you watch you’re scared by seeing that death in front of you, but you didn’t murder those people. If you pull the leaver your are actively deciding to kill someone and many people can’t live with that(and it’s something people often don’t consider when they hear a hypothetical, and don’t consider the gravity of the hypothetical). I personally couldn't live with myself if I took a life like that. And as you scale up, taking 4 innocent lives because the "you saved marginally more people" wouldn’t help me one bit. Maybe in the heat of the moment I might make a choice I forever regret out of instinct I don’t know. But giving my most deliberate answer would be I almost never pull the leaver (unless it’s like saving 100+ people or something, something so comically one sided that I don’t think I’d reasonably be able to be a bystander). I find the logic behind "I’d kill 4 people to save 5 in a heartbeat" terrifying. We don’t live in a word with perfect information, so if you’re willing to actively take lives because you perceive it’s marginally better, I find that scary.(and I personally chock it up not to people being ok with putting blood in their hands, but because they don’t fully grasp what it means to actively decide to pull the leaver). In a world with perfect information like a hypothetical I understand (not that I would) pulling the leaver, but it still freaks me out when I hear how many people say they would take lives if they thought it they thought was for the greater good/(net positive)

The point of the trolley problems are that since you are the one that is pulling the lever its your fault (under the law and morally) this is why in the 300,000$ vs 900,000$ you would be responsible for the damages of the 300,000$ trolley. This same principle is for all the questions for example you kill 1 person or the trolley kills 5.

i think only 61% pulled the lever to run the trolley into a brick wall because they believed there were people in the trolley. they could’ve also thought that they would be held accountable for the damage
@RealShlimee6 ай бұрын
I think the main thing you didn’t think about is the responsibility aspect of it. Like if you don’t pull the lever you’re not responsible for what happens as you didn’t do anything. If you do pull it you’re entirely responsible. Like the one that makes you decided between 1 or 3 trolleys. You’d probably have to pay for the 1 trolley but not the 3

something everyone overlooks~ I think its a matter of not taking the question seriously (because its ok to disagree with your logic, but so many people don't even take a second thought as to if they would murder someone{s} in this hypothetical). Its an incorrect read of the situation to say that the leaver and your agency aren't important parts of the problem. If you can't tell why this problem isn't "save 1 or 5 people" then you're not understanding the prompt.

@@benjamincrew8383 in the same way kids movies over look nuances~ I kinda find it disappointing he entirely ignored the concept of his own agency in these hypotheticals. Framing it as "saving 1 life or 5" isn't the question, its actively murder whoever is on the second track, or be a bystander as the ones on the first are killed. He talks about pulling the leaver so casually and as though there is no weight to to decision to take a life. Its ok to weigh those values and come to the conclusion you think its right to murder 1 person to save 5, but its not taking the question seriously to ignore the entire ethical quandary.
