There's a super tender, vulnerable moment towards the end you need to see. I love this crazy totally real pioneer woman. Despite a horrible case of RBF in her pictures, she was a wild romantic, good to native peoples, a DA Survivor, and a great example of the scientific method at work. Go back in time with me and let Anna Pierce Hobbs (not Bixby) take care of you! Feat. fire sounds, soft spoken chatter, nature sounds, visual triggers, and Illinois history from actual diaries and academic journals. Comment which background has the error, if you find it. If you like my storytelling skills, and want to keep in touch with me, I can email you neat goodies (and secret downloads) at byjenfinelli.com/you-want-heroes-and-fairies That way we can stay in touch if my KZbin disappears. There's also a bonus medical video for you here: too: landing.mailerlite.com/webforms/landing/t7c1e8 The views in the video aren't necessarily mine; you may have noticed by now I try to capture little-heard perspectives in history, such as the position of mixed race people in Meiji Japan (kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZXaoGacoa2lnZI ) or aboard a pirate ship (kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4PTlnaujtydr6M ), or the unusual existentialism of Joan of Arc's "voices" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHbInGmoZrh-f6c ). That's what's up.

@justaboutsquare There was a time period error in one of the cave pictures. That's the actual cave, but the bigger picture is actually modern day (there are tourists hidden in it). There's also a slight perspective error with the wheat/grass at the end. And thank you! If you liked this one, I think the 1575 one was really tight.

At first I was like “Milk sickness? What’s that? What about pasteurization?” But then I realized this is 1847, and pasteurization wasn’t invented until 1862.
@realrogue Жыл бұрын
This is one of the major reasons pasteurization made a difference in health! Here in Paraguay I'm drinking unpasteurized milk because there's none of that snakeroot plant here. I'm all for personal choice in consumerism, like they do in Canada, but yeah, unpasteurized milk killed a ton of people and people should know that kind of stuff! You seem pretty knowledgeable, so you might dig the obscure historical stuff in the 1920s Malawi medical exam. Edit: new sources below! One of the ones I'd used for the video was wrong.
@madeleinekrule1520 Жыл бұрын
What do they do in Canada?
@realrogue Жыл бұрын
I love how in Canada there are a lot more food options. You can sell goat milk. Fiddlehead fern. Restaurants can serve home made cheese and hunted wild elk. All of those things are illegal in much of the US, where essentially the huge factory farms have worked with government to produce regulations banning food they didn't produce in the name of safety. It's a whole thing. Despite the US' reputation, there are actually more food bans and restrictions there than even some places in Europe. It's easier to sell red dye in your food than goat's milk. California has a bunch of laws that make it hard even to sell at farmers' markets--you have to pay for a bunch of licenses, so poor people just get wrecked. Some Canadians in the press have been wanting to model California to combat farmer market fraud--please, please don't. California's way isn't it, imho. I'm all for pasteurization, and I'm also for consumer choice, and the current arrangement in a lot of the US blocks that.
@DrCandyStriper Жыл бұрын
Wait wouldn't Pasteurization only affect it if milk sickness were caused by pathogens like bacteria instead of toxins in the milk?
@realrogue Жыл бұрын
@DrCandyStriper That is what I used to think too! Apparently the toxins get denatured somewhere during the process. You know like the way some enzymes change form at certain temperatures? Super weird and surprised me a lot.

Milk Sickness killed Abraham Lincoln’s mother. Lincoln would talk about how devastating of a disease it was. His mom was in agony for nearly a week until she passed. It changed him, seeing his mother like that.

@np7926 People in Illinois think she haunts her ex-husband's cave because she buried treasure there. They think he only married her for her money and when she realized that she hid it. People say they see ghost lights up there sometimes. I have seen pagan/Wiccan people saying they think she is a ghost because she is mad that people still call her Hobbs Bixby even though Bixby was bad to her and she escaped him. Lots of legends around her!

There's a lot more where this came from! I like some of the shyness in the most recent 1920s radium onsen in Japan video, and while it's a little hard-core (with a bit of a rocky start) I found learning about the first doctor in Malawi, Daniel Malekebu, to be so inspiring I cried while making that video and had to pause. I actually cried a little on camera during the one where you're Joan of Arc and I'm her "voices," copied from her testimony at her trial around her actual strange un-recanting overnight. That one used the most powerful primary sources (her actual trial was awful), and some depressing academic papers, so there's a lot of history crammed into it, but I think despite the fact that we don't really know what her "St. Catherine" looked like the video turned out deeply affirming to anyone trying to be themselves based on what they believe. So if you like inspiring, I'd go for one of those last two, either Malawi doctor or, better quality maybe, Joan of Arc.

I saw this a couple months back, and I really enjoyed it. Then I did a bunch of reading about Anna Pierce Hobbs, and then some research about milk sickness. Then I ended up telling my husband a lot of stuff I learned, culminating in us going to identify some white snakeroot. Then I came back to watch this, and noticed the stuff at the end about the shelter, and where to donate... I couldn't be more impressed with an ASMR channel, it's quite a surprise. So now I'm here commenting b/c I don't usually pay much attention to the algorithm, but this stuff needs to be seen by more people! Thanks for the detailed work, and sorry in advance for many future rambling comments... just trying to help :)
@lolomcspanky10 ай бұрын
Oh yeah, and I'll check out the Joan of Arc video you mentioned in other comments. I want to give a suggestion for future videos, but I reaaaaaally doubt I could think of anything interesting that you don't already know way more about than me :)
@realrogue10 ай бұрын
You'd be surprised, I don't know things about a lot of things! I just know how to research. And btw the long rambling comments are my favorite. When people on this platform complain about "not gonna read that essay" I consider them deficient in neurons. 9/10 times a long comment means the person cares. There is a 1/10 time when it means they have no sense of boundaries, are hitting on me, and need help I cannot personally give, but that is incredibly rare. Either way, it's always a good read. Long comments are my favorite and bring me joy.

oh my days this is such a cool and immersive video!!! love at first sight with your channel, you seem like such an interesting and creative person btw wonder if you think the story of Anna finding out the cause of milk sickness from that shawnee woman is real, or is it another example of American people back then exoticizing native people and portraying them as the source of all natural wisdom (hahaha the Disney Pocahontas effect), what do you think? I'd love if it was real
@realrogue Жыл бұрын
It's definitely real--Anna described it herself, and it's included as a result in several academic sources. The Shawnee people did have a lot of knowledge that pioneers and European Americans just didn't bother to gather. Anna was special in that she was willing to listen. There are less sources at the end of this one than at the end of some of my other historical videos, but on that point everyone generally agrees. And thank you! ^_^ Lots more historical videos on this channel (as well as some scifi, if you're into that). The Joan of Arc video is a guess at the inside of Joan's head the night she changed her mind about recanting, based on her testimony at trial, if you're into getting weird with history! Sources for that one are clearer because we have the court documents.
@lolomcspanky10 ай бұрын
@@realrogue I thought it was delightful that Anna made such a point of giving credit to the Shawnee when she could have easily claimed to figure it out herself (and it seems like that's what most people did then)

Hey thanks! The one I really wish would get more love is the Joan of Arc dream/voice one I did, where you're her POV. While that one looked strange, I tried to imagine how someone in her time period would see her "saint," and spent some time thinking about what happened the night she un-recanted and decided to face death. She was just a kid, so while obviously I spend a lot more time in that one talking about historical reality than her POV voice would have, I really spent time trying to imagine what would convince a super-religious kid to go against the church of her day. That one meant a ton to me and I think doesn't get any love!
