if theta1= -90 degrees (parallel to x axis) then the displacement will not be in the z axis but will now be in the x axis right?

The displacement d(0 --> 1) in all these examples will always have a component in the z axis, regardless of the theta1. What do you mean by 'parallel to x axis'?
