Roofing is still hard work! I did this in my high school summers in the early 60s in hot, hot Florida. We carried many squares up ladders and nailed many, many when there were no pneumatic nail guns. We got it done with a lot of sweat and a lot of laughs.

Had Tamko 25 year premium architectural shingles installed on home in 2009, by 2023 they had lost 30% of the mineral overlay and the roof has only 3-5 yrs of life left according to 3 roofers. Expect 15 to 17 years from a 25 year Tamko shingle.

That looks like a good roof and a good crew. I'd chalk layout on a roof that cut up but it looks like the underlayment was put on straight. With metal valleys I put a strip of painters tape over the center rib during install because the loose shingles will scratch the paint and rust holes can appear 20-30 years down the line. I'd kill for some more shinglers but we don't have many immigrants in Alaska so finding hard working young guys that do good work is difficult.

To me, shingle color and shade are important to help control the temperature in the attic. Down here in the South (and NE Texas) is to use a lighter color. I used a dark color on my house in Michigan to gain heat from the sun to help melt the snow. I also like those valley strips. I laid paper down the valley, then the metal strip held down with nails against the strip sides so no nail went through the metal. All of the shingles extending out onto the valley strips were full-length for total strength.

Hi Nate, we in Cyprus built our houses concrete-brick-and-mortar style and usually, we don't construct pitched roof systems. We instead have our house built with "terraces", flat rooftops where we place the solar water heaters, solar panels, water tanks and aircon compressors. The way we insulate the terrace is with asphalt "paper" quite similar to those shingles, which we adhere on the floor of the roof by melting it at the joints.

It should be. We put it on every roof because of the rains we get. Any competent roofer does here. This is a gag to save $200 in metal. Now all the fascia will be taking the burden of all the water wicking back into it as well as OSB around the soffits soaking up the water like a sponge will expedite the rot.

Always great to see good craftsmanship. Now that this is out of the way, - the videos of this build have been few & far between - the viewer has little connect with what is going on; both with the house & the presenter - the spec house series was very good, with the right amount of detail & great, simple, honest presentation Even with the words ‘keep up the good work’; the delivery is mechanical & there is no connect. I watched the spec house series just to hear those words, in addition to great content, during Covid times All said, this series of videos, of this house, is uniformly below par & does not cut it!

He was a factory guy and said there was nothing wrong with the shingles and offered me one bundle to replace the few he notice that "might be loose." I ended up replacing them all on my own expense and have NEVER nor will I ever suggest them to anyone. I have been in the building trades for nearly 50 years and I have never been treated so badly.

10:23 Nate: "They [our installers] are going above and beyond" Me: "Well, they're installing shingles on your roof, they kind of have to..." Joking aside, I think that, as you more or less said, the success of using shingles in the US has to do with the availability of the materials. This subject has been talked about in this channel before when it came to why the use of wood instead of brick and mortar. I think that if your houses are not built with bricks because it's scarce and therefore relatively expensive, then your roofs won't be built with tile for the very same reason. Here in most of Spain we use tiles, which may have a few different shapes, even some variations in colors. In the North, mainly in the Northwest as there are a few quarrys here, we also use slate which, from a distance, may look relatively similar to shingles. I've never seen a shingle roof here in Spain, in fact I've only seen them in a couple of "big box stores" very recently and, to be honest, I didn't see myself willing to install them if I ever build my own house. Yes, I'm also "biased" in a way, and shingles may have their advantages but tiles here are absolutely tested and, to be honest, I don't think whatever shingles are sold here have much to do with those over there in terms of quality and technology.

all moisture from the building phase of a home goes should go away quickly enough to never cause an issue, no matter how much it rains during building, but the roof is especially a non issue because a roof gets so much hotter than the ambient temperature. the water leaves the roof in the form of heat driven vapor. if there's ever a moisture issue inside the guts of your house that supports ongoing mold, something else is wrong

Asphalt shingles are still a sub par product compared to what’s out there today. It’ll still need to be replaced in Nathan’s lifetime. This was just an add for the company. Especially because lumber yards don’t stock this in or close to Roseburg. Metal roof with hidden fasteners would have been the way to go. More up front cost but pretty much actual lifetime product. But free is even better than cheap one would suppose.

2:15 they add some fabric fibers… and that makes them stronger. But what you are failing to observe is… these are not as tough as you think. Some 1”-2” hail…. Will damage them pretty bad!

Jeepers. Whereabouts do you get 25 to 50mm balls of hail regularly enough to be a concern ??!!!! Sounds pretty intense!!

@@bushratbeachbum well if you look at last year depending where you have your house it was hail the size of softball and yes 1-2” was a lot of it on the east central US! Way more than in previous years…

After watching Stud Pack's most recent roofing video using synthetic underlayment AND shingles.. these crappy asphalt shingles are so laughable.

Indeed. For a fascinating grit-free synthetic alternative to asphalt shingles, with asphalt-like installation, see the latest Stud Pack video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHqri5aihJdjl8k. p.s. Speaking of father-son teams, one of these years Scott and Nate really should get together with Paul and Jordan! (Matt Risinger has been on Stud Pack as well as on Essential Craftsman, if they need an introduction.)

Have fun trying to keep the moss from growing and ruining the roof long before the expected perfect conditions warranty period expires.. Steel is the cheapest roof you’ll ever put on a home you plan on living in for decades.. Cheap 3tab is cheap every 10yrs 😂

I will never go back to asphalt shingles again. Metal is far better. In fact, I recently replaced my roof with metal and my insurance company reduced my premium by nearly $200 a year. And I have a 40 year roof out of it.
