Aspiration Pneumonia in Dogs

Pneumonia, by definition, is an infection in the lung. Although it’s commonly seen in humans, our furry friends are also prone to this condition. We typically see this in dogs more so than cats. Especially young dogs and brachycephalic breeds such as French Bulldogs Bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, anything that has a squashed up face. There seems to be an overrepresentation of these breeds when we're talking about pneumonia.
So, how do their lungs become infected? The most likely cause of pneumonia is what we would call aspiration pneumonia, which means that foreign material has been aspirated into the lungs. It's secondary to an episode of vomiting, secondary to an episode of regurgitation or secondary to drowning or being underwater for an extended period of time.

My 12-year-old male yorkie was admitted to the hospital 7/10/22. He has aspiration pneumonia and is in an oxygen chamber. The vet said his progress is slow and he still can't breathe on his own. His trachea collapsed in May of 2021. He was doing okay with that. We're hopeful that he will get through this. It's just a matter of when. I'm hoping soon.

my 13 week old puppy is still hospitalised after 5 days of oxygen therapy and IV. vets said that there's minimal improvement but he's stabilised. we're not sure how long it's going to take him to get well
