This is funny. I have an old H170 ITX motherboard that behaved exactly like yours and I also figured it was the BIOS weeks ago but I couldn't for the life of me find the BIOS IC on the motherboard to reflash so I shelved it. when I saw your video today I thought I'd see if you maybe had the same problem, but you also ended up suspecting the BIOS so I decided to search for the BIOS IC again. Turns out it was hidden under a plastic trap door that I thought looked like an inductor. The trap door turned out to be an SMD SOIC8 socket, something I have never seen before. I flashed the BIOS and voila, a working motherboard. Thanks!
@LearnElectronicsRepair Жыл бұрын
That's good to hear. I've seen those little 'trap door' things on adapters for my eprom programmer, but never on a motherboard

Just the mini-ITX case itself is worth more than 25 euros around here. I wish I had access to this flea market 😁
@LearnElectronicsRepair Жыл бұрын
There expect there are flea markets in most places. I used to go to them regularly in the UK though they were called 'car boot sales' there and I bought (and sold) many things over the years. Also auctions are a good place to look, especially commercial/liquidation auctions

Vinicius Fonseca...yes...it's an InWin Chopin version 1...i bought a version 2 without a power supply for 50 pounds from eBay seller (about 60 Euros just for the case)...if it's with a power supply it would be about a 100 Euros...so definitely a bargain at 25...i've been to car boot sales here but i'll never see tech..usually peoples old kitchenware pots cutlery clothes toys and garage junk

I used to have the right hand left hand rule. That's where you hold it in your right hand and toss it back and forth from hand to hand. And it will work again.

Did you happen to compare the bios copy that you dumped vs the good one? It would be an interesting autopsy maybe.

A lot of newer motherboards don't bleep at start up. That computer can only be 5-6 years old considering the Kaby Lake (7th gen) CPU.

@luc_libv_verhaegen Жыл бұрын
Did the other CPU come good as well? Also, these H110 motherboards were designed for the skylake (6xxx) series cpus, and needed a bios upgrade to be able to run kaby lake. But how do you update the bios when you have the wrong cpu, and no bios programmer... But since this thing was sold on the flee market, the chances of someone sticking a newer CPU in it and then selling it for 35GBP as "not-working" is pretty low...
@LearnElectronicsRepair Жыл бұрын
Yes both CPU are working. "But how do you update the bios when you have the wrong cpu, and no bios programmer." If it won't boot then you don't, you sit there twiddling your thumbs and ask yourself why one earth you don't own an eprom programmer whens you can buy a CH341A (which will program these 24/25 series eproms used on many motherboards and even GPUs) for less than €5. So why would you *not* own one? I have a CH341A as well as the TL866CS Iused in this video, it works just fine www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005226746307.html?af=ler2022 The ITX PC cost me €25, which is £22 (GBP) actually 😉
@luc_libv_verhaegen Жыл бұрын
@@LearnElectronicsRepair I am not sure anymore as this was 7 or so years ago, but i am pretty certain that i ended up bailing out my dad's kaby lake system (7xxx) with a sky lake (6xxx) of mine. But yeah, a ch341 is on my wishlist, especially since it is well supported by flashrom. 25EUR was a pretty good deal indeed.

Bios battery.
@LearnElectronicsRepair Жыл бұрын
@@jimnicosia5934 In my experience a discharged battery will mess up the CMOS settings but I can't see how it would corrupt the BIOS, especially with the eprom chip being non volatile read only memory and all that. I mean, in this video I removed and programmed it, took it out of the programmer (no battery) plugged it into the motherboard and it then worked. That kinda disproves your theory, or so it seems.

Had the same kind of issue with an ASRock H170 Pro4 and Z170 Pro4. Both came back with a reflash of the bios. Seems to me that the issues came up after the bios battery had insufficient voltage.

I see a graphics card slot, that’s empty. Does the i5-7400 have integrated graphics? Maybe someone tried to update the BIOS/UEFI and “bricked” it?
@LearnElectronicsRepair Жыл бұрын

Yes, unlike amd, intel desktop cpus came/come with integrated graphics. Intel had no separate GPU to sell you for 25 years :)

@luc_libv_verhaegen Жыл бұрын
@@1pcfred Only the G variants. Desktop level cpus from amd are more often without integrated graphics than with. Whereas for intel, at least a few years ago, you would have to go with xeons to not have integrated graphics.
@1pcfred Жыл бұрын
@@luc_libv_verhaegen if you don't need an iGPU then it is good to not have to have one. What does an iGPU do when you're not using it? Can the hardware even be used? It annoys me that it's there. There's certainly a cost associated with it that the user is bearing.

you must have swapped the bios chip as the original chip had a sticker on it, then it suddenly changed to a chip without a sticker on it
