Sequence 13 Memory 5 - LAST RITES
In his quest to dismantle the regime of Girolamo Savonarola, Ezio targets the fourth lieutenant, a priest who has taken refuge atop the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. The priest, seeking solace, offers his prayers to the Lord, unaware of the approaching danger.
Ezio, moving with the silent grace of a master Assassin, begins his ascent of the grand Duomo, undetected by the priest or any onlookers. The climb is arduous, but Ezio's determination and skill see him through. Upon reaching the top, he swiftly and silently assassinates the priest, addressing him in his final moments.
The priest, realizing his end is near, laments his misplaced faith. He had believed Savonarola to be a true preacher of the word of God. Ezio, with a mix of empathy and resolve, informs the priest that Savonarola's sermon is a lie. The priest, stricken with guilt, confesses that he led his flock astray, driven by his desperate desire to believe in something greater.
Ezio acknowledges this human frailty, understanding the priest's misguided faith. He assures the dying man that they all long for something to believe in, but that does not absolve them of their actions. With a solemn promise to see his father's work completed, Ezio offers the priest a final wish for peace.
As the priest succumbs to his fate, the realization of Savonarola's deceit weighing heavily upon him, the Medici guards seize control of the district.
