Sequence 13 Memory 8 - HITTING THE HAY
Ezio continues his mission to dismantle the oppressive regime of Girolamo Savonarola. The seventh target is a farmer, one of Savonarola's nine lieutenants, tasked with overseeing the hay essential to the city's sustenance.
The farmer addresses his workers with a mix of urgency and frustration. He outlines their orders: to keep watch over the hay and ensure no harm comes to the bundles of hay. The farmer explains that without this basic resource, their enemies will lose the means to resist, forcing them to stand down. Many have already succumbed to the lack of essentials-clothing, food, shelter, and warmth-all derived from hay.
He acknowledges the grumbling among his workers, understanding their perception of the task as a waste of time. However, he stresses that their very existence depends on securing the hay. He elaborates, detailing how the hay feeds their horses, which in turn pull carts to transport goods to other cities, thereby fueling their economy. Furthermore, the hay sustains livestock, providing wool, meat, and milk. The farmer underscores the vital role of hay in maintaining their way of life and prosperity.
As the farmer speaks, Ezio stealthily approaches. With his unparalleled skill in blending into the environment, he hides under a bundle of hay. In a swift, unnoticed move, Ezio takes down the farmer. The farmer, in his final moments, is confronted by Ezio’s words: "You would have let your own people starve! And for what?"
The farmer, grappling with the end, reveals his motivations. He speaks of suffering insults for too long, being called simple and low-class, and his desire for respect. Ezio, unwavering and resolute, responds that the farmer does not have his respect. He reassures the farmer that although his passing may be painful, it will be a gentle sleep. With a final wish for the farmer to rest in peace, Ezio completes his mission.
Following the dismissal of the farmer, the Medici guards regain control of the district. Ezio's actions continue to weaken Savonarola’s hold on Florence, bringing hope and stability back to the city. Ezio continues to liberate his city from the grip of Girolamo Savonarola's tyranny.
