Well, I asked for this video just a couple of days ago in a comment to another AC video of yours! Of course you must have been working on it for way longer than two days, but still I thank you as if it were a direct answer to my personal request. I'm egotistic like that. (LOL!) Thanks for your videos, and for this series in particular! p.s. I liked this game a lot, having played it in its original version but when the vast majority of bugs and problems was already fixed. I always liked both: - the extended prologue, that to me is a strong point of this chapter among the series' story telling used methods (vs other chapters, I mean), - and Connor as a main protagonist, as I think he is indeed the perfect central piece of the puzzle for holding the whole thing together (he cannot be some lighthearted kind of character, in a story that is not a joke anywhere and in any way).

He isn't hunting Lee for vengeance anymore, he's hunting Lee because Lee is a templar and templars, even when not evil, are corrupting and poisonous to every society they interfere. @@vinnie19971 You can climb trees the mechanic is still there it's just that Ubisoft didn't design the Dense forested areas in Valhalla with Tree-Running in mind, which to me is a huge wasted opportunity considering the parkour still sucks, and you can only get places by longship or by horse which limits your options significantly, adding in Tree-Running would spice things up so you could get off your Longship kill a target in the woods if one is there escape by Tree-Running and jump off a cliff into the ocean at the edge of a forest and get into your longship or jump off a tree onto your horse and ride away and escape, just adding tree-running would make gameplay more fun, Unity as it stands is still the best Assassin's Creed Game in terms of gameplay mechanic and the assassin feel and no other game comes close, you could literally remake AC1 and the Ezio Trilogy with Unity's gameplay and they would be the best AC Games in terms of story and gameplay.

I remember playing the Homestead missions and thinking "I really wish this kind of stuff was a part of the main story." And i know the missions gameplay wise weren't all that engaging, but we saw a different side of not only Connor's personality, but his life, being the master of this Homestead and caring for the workers and Achilles. And I was surprised that the last Homestead mission was Achilles' death. I didn't expect such a major character to die in a side arc, but funny enough that made it more impactful, in a way? It made me feel like I put in effort into something that wasn't just revenge and death and was very much a sort of celebration of life, which was kind of what someone like Connor and Achilles needed. It was a lot more of a personal story in the end and the pay off of sending Achilles off with a smile on his face was satisfying.

I wrote a whole giant essay comment on why it is among my least favorite AC games but DAMN it does have it's moments. The most heartwarming moment was in the Homestead bar and the flag that the tailor made is shown off to everyone. The camera cuts to Connor with a little smile and that just might be the only shot of Connor being happy. It's a buried seen and understated, not pay much mind and you miss it, but I loved seeing Connor have a nice moment that he could enjoy and be present in. The moment can be seen in the video: Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered: Homestead Missions Compilation Cutscenes Gameplay at 47:48

I miss Desmond :( I think Ubisoft lost the ac feel when they killed him, apart from that, there was something on the original assassins creed (1) that grounded the game to real and mysterious history, something as deep and rich as the plot throughout time between assassins and templars, each time they added some mystical godlike magical theme they departed from that original feel,

I believe they could have brought him back it's a low possibility but there was a mention of a peice of Eden that could bring someone back to life, I thought they'd eventually suprise us with that and say yeah it exists but if you did bring back desmond you'd have a very tough path ahead which would lead into a world war setting in which Hitler turns out to be a Templar leader who has a very dark power you need to discover throughout the story but a new mechanic could be desmond becomes a lot more involved and you can upgrade him throughout the game (eqiup various hidden blades and lost armour)/learn new ways to be an assassin and a new 'timeslip feature' were you can go into that time period as Desmond as what you're facing now is more dangerous than you first thought. Through the game you build a new assassins guild on top of a dying one.

Connor was honestly my favourite protagonist. That laser focus you describe is exactly how he should be. Unlike Ezio who still had a familiar world full of people like him after his family died, Connor was left completely alone and thrust into an alien world of people who look at him like he's less than them. This is a feeling any person of colour in the english-speaking world knows. He has to go further and be better than everyone around him to survive. And that one scene where Connor is being escorted to his execution and we can see his fellow assassins in the background clearing the way to rescue him, wow! Connor is so cool through that whole segment, even saying to the Templar enforcer "I will not die this day. The same can not be said for you!"

I tink it's partly because of his closing monologue being cut because that kinda ties everything together in a nice little bow and without it his arc feels a bit incomplete. And partly because of his voice direction. It's accurate to what a non native English speaker would sound like as I understand it but it does kinda come off as overly stiff and wooden at times especially if you don't have the for want of a better term meta knowledge that they were going for accuracy, he's a victim of the "Reality is Unrealistic" trope essentially. Last but not least Ezio is one of the best characters in all of gaming, with a cradle to grave arc spanning 3 games, that is a hell of a tought act to follow and even as good as Connor is he had basically no chance of 1 upping Ezio sadly and the comparison wound up being unfavourable.

I think my biggest and most unforgivable gripe with this game is that they wrote in and recorded the end game monologue for Connor that showed tons of character development and made him seem so much more real. The past affecting the future, the American Revolution in the eyes of a Native American. Connor is caught between several worlds and the world he loved ,and was loved by, was destroyed. That builds something in someone. That rage of losing a piece of yourself is what drives many stories and it works. Connor didn’t get 3 games in the franchise, but if he did have a second game I think people would have loved him some more. The parkour, the homestead, the combat and relationships where amazing. Desmond was a confused young character and that was exactly what I was as a kid playing these games at 6-10 years old lol. From AC1-AC3, I was in love with the story. That will never change :/

Talking to the slowly growing community, advancing their skill and homes to become bigger.... The only downside to homestead missions I can even think of is how missable they can be if you're not careful. AC3 is a game to take your time with. Rushing through main missions and over using fast travel is a great way to miss out on those incredible homestead missions.

I really liked Assassin's creed 3 , it wasn't a 10/10 masterpiece with no flaws whatsoever , but I understood Connor and felt his pain , when he tried to work together with Haytham I saw how badly he wanted to get through to his father and when he eventually had to kill him I felt guilt , also the ending was really sad and hit hard plus the score was masterful a native american version of Ezio's Family

The one problem in this game I'm never able to get over is the fact that Connor finds out about Haytham off screen. It's just so incredibly disappointing to me and it just takes away any of the impact any of their scenes have afterwards. He literally trained and brought together the guys that killed Connors mother and destroyed his hometown but we don't even see Connors reaction to that. It's like if Luke learning about Darth Vader happened offscreen.

AC3 combat was my favorite back when it came out, and I think it's the best among the AC games with guns. It's very easy to master once you get the hang of it, but it isn't mindless. You still need to pay attention to each enemy type - Agiles can't be disarmed, Officers can't be counter-attacked and have hard-hitting counter-attacks + a pistol, Grenadiers can't be counter-attacked and have strong attacks + grenades, and Jaegers are like a hybrid of the Officers and Grenadiers. And all of them have muskets, so even the basic Militia and Regulars could threaten you with a single shot or a volley and you had to pay attention to that or get bullets to the face. It was balanced by human shields and how inaccurate the guns could be. So I was kinda disappointed when AC4, as good as it was, went back to pinpoint-accurate muskets and less variety in the enemy types.
@tacotruck2595

Yes man, you nailed it. Also the double counter animations! Different ones for different weapons and enemy types. And even if you were double countering two regulars with the tomahawk you’d still get a few different animations. It was all so smooth and satisfying. Black Flag had a fraction of the variety and Unity was way less smooth.

agreed. It definitely has the best guns of all ac games (the original only tho), cuz you can aim without pulling out your weapon, charge a shot, and the game allows you to fucking aim without the cursor, so you need to guess it right if you hold high profile

Finally someone who understands the value of AC3. Personally, I never saw AC3 as a game about Connor, for me it was always Desmond’s story, and Haytham and Connor merely represented the conflict within Desmond, the doubts he had, the questions he developed about the creed and the constant uncertainty he faced about his journey and especially about where and how that journey would end.
@jirkazalabak1514
@jirkazalabak1514 3 жыл бұрын
Sure, but that still doesn´t excuse shit writing. Connor´s motivations make no sense, and ultimately, he fails in everything he set out to do. He swore to protect his village, but he destroys it by supporting the Patriots, even AFTER he already knows that their leader (Washington) was responsible for burning it down the first time. Like WTF is wrong with him? Not to mention that all of those betrayals do nothing to transform his character. He still remains the naive child he is when he first approaches Achilles. Maybe if we got some sort of sequel, where we could see a more mature, more nuanced Connor, they could have saved the character, similar to Arno in Dead Kings.

@@YoruWasTaken Honestly, Haytham´s presence saves the game. If it was just Connor, the game would be far worse. However, we don´t get to play as Haytham long enough. Most players will spend about 90% of their playtime with Connor. What you said about him is exactly the problem. The character needs to be more than a "device". Sure, the main story is about Desmond, but there was no reason to just ditch Connor like that. In the grand scheme of things, Ezio´s only purpose was to deliver messages to Desmond, and he´s one of the greatest characters in history of fiction. Good stories are written by characters driving the plot, not the plot driving the character. Connor´s story (sadly) falls into the latter category. Not to mention that the Desmond story "conclusion" was also a massive letdown. Having played as Desmond for 5 games at that point, watching him learn and grow into a badass, only for him to die in a Deus Ex Machina moment. What a shitshow! That game really started the downfall of the AC as a franchise, because the modern day story became mostly irrelevant at that point.

@@YoruWasTaken If that character is the MAIN character, then I most certainly can. If the player spends almost the entire game playing as Connor, then his character will have a big impact on their overall impression of the game. Also, Connor isn´t the only problem. As I said, the modern day storyline is also a huge disappointment. Many of the side activities are extremely boring as well. Assassination contracts are basically just like "kill these 5 random people with muskets in the Boston area". Like WTF? No guards? No scenarios? The Frontier, while beautiful to look at, is a pain to travel through, and the shiny new parkour system is almost useless there. Stealth is mostly passive and boring, and the mission structure doesn´t promote it very much. Missions in BF and Rogue are much better when it comes to stealth gameplay, which is weird, because you are a pirate in one game and a Templar in the other. The game has it´s positives of course. The soundtrack is good, the animations look pretty good (the best in the Kenway saga probably). The ship gameplay is also decent. The foundation of the game is stable. It´s just a shame that they didn´t come up with better story and setting (more parkour-friendly) to build on that foundation.

I just recently finished all of 3 (minus the dlc) and i love Connor. He is an absolute beast when it comes to combat and i found myself really liking his character. He can be EXTREMELY aggressive and naive at times, but it is understandabpe considering his enviroment and the time period he lives in. He is shown to have a big compassionate and soft side with the homestead missions and how he cares about the people he practically rule over. Running through trees and the frontier is surprisingly satisfying. I also liked that twist with Haythem in the beginning and loved the modern day stuff in this one (made me wish we got more modern day segments where you do assassin style missions in later games). I loved the Homestead missions and how assassin recruits were given more depth and personality in this one. This game also has my favorite costumes with the spirit animal costume and warrior gear. The parkour in this one is also one of my favorites. I love the weapons and kills. Im also one of those people who actually loved exploring the sewers for fast travel points. Exploring this game in general was alot fun. And that ending...just so good. Things i didn't like were the qtes when hunting animals because they can glitch out and not read your inputs. Free falling from trees into haystacks was also janky 90% of the time with you aiming for it, on for Connor to jump to his death. I also found myself not really utilizing the trade systen because money rarely ever became an issue and the interface can be confusing especially when navigating the menus. The optional objectives were also awful (i hate them in most the series though, especially Brotherhoods and Revelations). I also experienced a few glitches in some areas with the physics, but not enough to really ruin anything. I also felt cities were WAY too saturated with guards at times. I found it borderline impossible at times to lose guards.

I agree about the prologue bit. I just picked up AC3 to play through for the first time. I actually found myself appreciating the Haytham section because we got to know, on a more personal level, who would ultimately be the villains in this story arc. When I was playing Haytham’s bit I was surprised they were Templars - they seemed like decent people. It wasn’t until you saw through Connor’s eyes the reality of who they were. There’s something to appreciate there, making your villains more personable. They aren’t just random nobodies you learn about during a 2 minute exposition dump before you assassinate them. You actually know the people you’re going after. It was pretty cool. I can’t say it was executed in the perfect way, the rushed some of it, but I appreciate it nonetheless. I also very much enjoy exploring early America, running through the trees. It’s a good change of pace from all the cities we got in the previous installments.

I've never related to a character more than I have with Connor. He's in a lot of ways, how a real human being would behave if they experienced what he had to go through. I love that he will never give up on his ideals no matter what others say. Some may call that naïve. But it shows how strong he is mentally as he is physically. He's not corruptible and there's nothing that could sway him. He always calls out the injustices happening in front of him. He would not simply stand by and watch evil take over. He fights. Even if it's a losing battle. He always fights. He's headstrong and nothing stands in his way. I personally think AC3 is a game you have to let it flow rather than trying to get to some objective (Trying to skip the prologue ASAP, Trying to play as Connor etc.). Taking your time and exploring everything the game has to offer does wonders. This is the only game I felt 100%-ing actually felt rewarding and I have 100%-ed most AC games (You can skip the tunnels though). I love that Templars aren't Saturday morning cartoon villains again. The Ezio trilogy really turned Templars into that after all the effort AC1 went through to show their complex nature. Haytham is arguably one of the best characters in the entire franchise. PS: The soundtrack is amazing. You should've mentioned it. But I'm extremely happy with how thought out this video essay is.

I've been replaying all the old ac games starting with 2. Ac revelations was the most fun to replay. But then I got to ac3 and everything about it just gave me a different feeling than the rest. A good feeling. You have to look at Conner's story as a tragedy. Not a happy ending. You'll have a different level of appreciation for him if you look at it that way.

To me, Connor is the best Assassin. He never gives up no matter what the fuck happens. He’s like Batman. Many mistake him being serious and stoic as boring, but to him, emotions are a burden and useless to him. He’s good to a fault, and the best IML

AC3 is the first AC game for me so I couldn't compare Connor to anyone. And for me, AC3 got a great story and characters. Homestead mission doesn't feel like side missions because it adds dimension to Connor. And the scene where they gave Connor a flag is a tearjerker.

I loved ac3 the moment it came out. Connor was by far my favorite character of the entire series. I've bought the remastered for my ps4 pro and will play it for nostalgic reasons. The only thing I will say is that the first engine was more realistic. The remaster makes everyone look like they have claymation faces.

I also don't think Connor is a bad character. As you said, once you take into account his life and his motivations you can easily understand why he is the way he is. I agree that Ubisoft should have showed more of his more compassionate side and the other aspects of his character on the main story, like they did in the Homestead missions. However, after I recently replayed AC 3, I realized that it's not that Connor is just brooding and angry that makes him appear bland, it's the way his lines are delivered. There were times where I thought he sounded bored or disinterested when scenes clearly meant him to be tense, sad, reflexive, thoughtful, etc. No disrespect to his VA, it just comes across that way somehow. Contrast that with Bayek, who can be similarly brooding and stoic at times, but the VA's performance is so good he never once sounds repetitive, disinterested or bland even in the moments the writing is not that great.
@Agito4774

I agree so much with this 100% and Connor’s dialogue with his lines definitely could’ve been a lot better but I don’t think that he’s a bad character too by any means 😊
@biofriik
@biofriik 3 жыл бұрын
In regards to Connor's dialogue, you have to remember that the English he speaks is not his native language. People who speak languages they do not grow up with tend to speak more slowly and maybe even monotonously. In fact, Connor doesn't use any contractions in his speech which is also something that non-native speakers tend to do. Overall, I think the "monotony" was a conscious decision by the writers and to me, it helps bring home the fact that Connor is a fish out of water throughout most of the game.

One of my fav games in the entire franchise! I just simply love Connor, and a native american protagonist is not a very common thing! I speak for myself, when i say, that this game is one of my favourite in the entire franchise, it received too much hate and stupidity from annoying fans back then. Connor had too much dedication, devotion and atitude. Its funny, when you are playing Assassins Creed lll, the game feels so correct in the both sides (Templars and Assassins) giving us the oportunity to have an experience of different ideas. To choose our own decisions. In some point in the game, i was with Haytham, in others with Connor. For me, there's no enemies in this game, only two factions with different ideas. I played, all the entire franchise and this game is the only one, that you are feeling that the Assassins persuit an empty goal and the templars only want to follow an order, direction and purpose.

I liked Altair and Ezio but they didn't move me as much Kenwey family did, they were and are my favorite, i can't say how sad i was when Haythem died. I still think Connor received a lot of unfair flack. Great character with a lot of depth. It was super obvious how many people chose not to play the Homestead missions, where we see a totally different side to his character. I still remember the joy in his voice when he finds out two characters he meets in the homestead missions are getting married, one of the few times Connor seems happy in the game. Wish we got to see more of Connor, a character who was still growing, even by the end of the game. One of my only gripes with the story is how biased the writers were towards the Bluecoats. I wish the writers had the balls to not pick a side and show both the British and Americans as two sides of the same coin. Its crazy to think how many quality AC games we got with so little turnaround.

Answering the title; No, it REALLY wasn't "THAT" bad. It wasn't bad at all. The problem is, everyone is so obsessed and nostalgic for Ezio's story, that Connor's story gets so overlooked and essentially becomes underrated. Connor's story is the one that I connected to/with, the most and I make absolutely no apologies for that. For me, to this day, this is still my personal favorite in the series. Plus, it was back in a time when Assassin's Creed ACTUALLY felt like Assassin's Creed and not just another Witcher 3 wannabe, like the modern day games have become. Altair and Connor will always be the best Assassin's, for me. Ezio? Eh.. I don't hate him, but I honestly couldn't care less.

Loved this game and the replay potential still holds up to this very day. I loved Connor and his serious personality. It fits when you chalk up his life story compared to other assassins. If I was a guy who lost everything and was basically alone in a single minded quest turned conspiracy, im not gonna be happy go lucky lol. It also contributes that his background as a warrior led to him being more disciplined. The only thing I didnt like personally about the game was the homestead missions and how large the frontier was. It was always a pain to traverse and since I didnt know how the homestead and trading worked, I could never upgrade my arrow quiver and other stuff Edit: I also wished we had more Haytham missions or even an entire game dedicated to Haytham. Hes so badass, underrated and all his combat animations are silky smooth and graceful as you would expect befitting a distinguished Templar. He was like the Count Dooku of Assassins Creed. It sucks that the only other stuff of Haytham which we have is the novels.
