Assassin's Creed hidden blade: Would it be practical in real-life?

Lots of people have asked me about the hidden blade, so here is my opinion on the hypothetical practical efficiency of such a weapon design.
This is of course all just for entertainment, so don't get any ideas to make of these in your garage to play Altair in a crowded city area... That wouldn't make you very popular.
From a martial arts perspective it doesn't make a lot of sense to strap a blade to the wrist instead of holding a knife or dagger in the hand. It's not as stable, doesn't allow the user to apply as much pressure, and it's not as safe or reliable. You kind of have to be a video game character to care more about badass style than your own safety. :)

Reg Fife It made sense in the early parts of the very first game since the main character wasn't carrying tons of weapons and his outfit actually blended in with some of the locals. In the later games it's ridiculous because your character is always armed to the teeth and dressed very conspicuously, but I guess they kept the hidden blade because people like it and it's become sort of a series trademark.

Otimo well in syndicate they big ass coats had a ton of places so unless a officer searched it would be invisible no one would care or notice. Think of it this way irl cops miss a thousand things every day back then they caught maybe a quarter of a thousand things. That was back when gangs just did whatever and ruled cities and police had little to no power like today. And as far as knowing they were coming Jacob was really the only one but that's because he let his presence be known. Even while being hunted you can be stealthy and syndicate actually put a step in the right direction with showing nothing on you and sword in cane etc. And honestly if you know of the assassins you know what to look for hiding isn't easy.

The original hidden blade from the first game was very much like a push dagger, though it requires the sacrifice of the ring finger. The blade pops up where the ring finger would be, and it held in a fist between the middle and little fingers, then the assassin can punch it into the enemy instead of palming it like later games.

They never really describe it in detail, but I read in one of the novels that there is a little string that goes around the little finger. The blade stays inside the bracer and will only pop out when the wearer tilts their wrist and bends their pinky a certain way. Its spring activated, so when the person bends their pinky again, the blade retracts.

I think it's possible. There definitely needs to be a bracer to make it safer for the user. There is an issue to keep it locked so it doesn't accidently go off and when you block/fall. From the videos I have seen, there are retraction and activation variations that would cause issues for speed and reliability. It can be engineered better tho.

When people say, "It's just a video game, who cares?", they tend to assume that critiques of the game elements are complaints. But that's generally not the case! Often when people evaluate video games, it's a way of having fun and obtaining more knowledge! For example, we all know gold armor, weapons, and tools would be quite impractical. So why bother critiquing them in video games? Well, it's a wonderful way to learn about the properties and value of gold. It's also a great way to learn more about armor, weapons, and tools. The KZbin series "Game Theory" takes video games very seriously - not because the videos are complaining about the games or because it's important for us to know whether or not Princess Peach has fake tits, but because it's a wonderful way to learn more about the world around us! Sure, it's all fun and games trying to decide if the Nintendo girls are fake, but we get to learn about real implants. Of course diamond armor in Minecraft ridiculous, but we learned about the properties and value of diamonds. Of course we can pawn getting shot in the head as "video game logic" and not give a damn, but isn't it awesome learning about the actual plausibility of surviving such a wound? If anyone ever complains about these weapon videos taking video games too seriously, Skall should respond with, "You aren't taking these weapons seriously enough." These aren't complaints about unrealistic weapons, but critiques used to help us better understand the real world around us. I can't speak for why Skall does these reviews, but I can say that there's plenty of good that comes from them. Even if you don't learn anything new, at least you can laugh and have a good time.

The idea of being a assassin, a blade in the crowd, having to run away and go back to being low profile asap while also experiencing real world history I must say is very unique and I think is cool. Sure, theres a few historical inaccuracies and too many games out there that also have History as their theme, but like what I just said just its just a theme. Assassins Creed USED TO revolve around history, mixing with the fantasy of being a deadly exaggerated swagger of a 14th century italian assassin. Not just as a setting but also a focus.

***** I'm a mechanical engineer and a huge AC fan and I agree with all your observations. I've already spent some time considering all of these issues and a few more. For example: if the blade is wet with blood and retracts, when the blood dries out, it would jam and ruin the mechanism. Even though, I still dream someday building one which will overcome those problems and satisfy the criteria of resistance, ‘concealability’ and reliability… BTW: the slipping bracer issue could be fixed if the device is attached directly in the glove (and the glove's palm is resistent enough).

i actually was thinking the same thing with the glove lol, nice going, i think a gravity/momentum deployed knife would be more practical due to the lessening of moving parts& looser tolerances that would be allowed, i think that the overall length of the item would likely be almost the length of the forearm to be practical (as in order to keep the rigidity needed for a slash you would want part of the tang to stay in the housing).

By the time Ezio got to use it. I know that people say his design uses a ring with a string tied to the release and retract mechanism of the blade. Probably DaVinci modified the release and retract mechanism because he couldn't replicate the release mechanism that most others used since he was basically going off of codex entries

Skall, do remember, that the point of the blade was as an assassination weapon, not as a combat weapon. Some of those issues are somewhat reduced by the fact that they basically should be limited in use to a quick knife to something soft and important. Also, the between the fingers issue was moderated by the fact that the original version necessitated the removal of the ring finger for just that reason. Not saying its practical, its just not quite as bad as you say.

@Cheater500k That doesn't even prove that what I said was incorrect. The video does point out that the early blades could be used but the threat of cutting a digit was still present until the blade was elevated in the Renaissance era. I guess I was wrong about De Vinci "creating" the new hidden blade, but Altair technically just viewed the future and stole the idea

true. c&p of my comment: ah i remember this video. but now seeing it again i just realized for the resistance thing, assassins are often seen wearing gloves of some sort. not saying that this is concrete what they do, but possibly the whole blade could be connected to the glove. in that sense your hand and fingers are providing the opposite pull to counteract the stabbing resistance; especially when ur hand is flexed up or in a fist. that which also flexes ur forearm muscles, creating a tighter fit on the straps around ur arm.
@hiimchrisj
@hiimchrisj 4 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure that's what he's referring to when he talks about how all it's fastened to is a bracer. I'm looking at all the designs for the hidden blades in the games right now and they're all just leather or armored bracers around the forearm. He's right, obviously it's not just gonna fall off, but there's nothing reinforcing the blade against an opposing force when stabbing.

@BrentonDusk 4 жыл бұрын
@@hiimchrisj yeah, in-game most just use a bracer, but if the blade was actually attached to a glove (gauntlet, as written in the first post), that would provide the resistance to prevent slipping backward. There is also a lot of additional friction when you've got the bracer on multiple layers of clothing, and if the ring & string were threaded in a way that they could only be intentionally activated (such as a knot preventing the string from being pulled while at the wrong angle), the string could serve as a resistant force as well. Plus, as the hidden blade is designed to be a stealth weapon as opposed to an open combat weapon, the user can usually choose the path of least resistance for the blade to enter. I personally think that the main advantage of the blade over a handheld weapon is that apart from being broken (and the blades are fairly unbreakable due to being typically made from the metal Adamantine), you can't be disarmed. Unless you're literally disarmed, in which case you have bigger problems. It's also readily accessible as a lightning fast surprise attack at any time, and works as an extension of the arm which most daggers don't boast.
@glutenfreeair8970
@glutenfreeair8970 4 жыл бұрын
True, however, He does say how there is a bracer. If this wasn’t fiction and they did have a hidden blade it wouldn’t really be a stabbing motion, faulting his argument, in the cgi trailers its more of a throat slitting or neck stabbing, which is easy due to less resistance. Of course in the gameplay they tend to stab not slit which is why he brought it up, but realistically you are correct of how the gauntlet stops it from moving from side to side when slitting.
@AnaseSkyrider
@AnaseSkyrider 9 жыл бұрын
Skallagrim's concern about accidentally extending your hand to fire the ring mechanism could be solved by attaching the ring to the thumb, and giving the string enough slack that you can't pull the mechanism even if you bend your wrist as far as you could. Then, to actually activate it, you'd have to grab the slack of the string with the rest of your fingers as you flick your wrist. So you can't release the blade by extending your hand too far, and it still only requires one hand to use.

I completely agree with you. It’s really funny how everyone sees this video and is like ‘oh so it’s a useless and retarded weapon’ No! It’s not useless... if you assume the mechanism isn’t prone to failure and the blade isn’t prone to breaking then the hidden blade would be fucking perfect for doing the dirty work. It just wouldn’t be for fighting.. just for finishing moves really. If it has the ability to put a hole in someone and not break, then it’s not a useless weapon. Besides I think you would be able to draw it far faster than a regular dagger. Even if you have a dagger in the perfect spot to draw it, you still have to reach and grab it before you draw. With a hidden blade that problem is removed. Yes it’s complicated and has the potential to be impractical but back in old times where most people would never have even heard of such a weapon, it would have so much potential.

Late to the party. While I do agree that using a dagger the regular way is more practical, I think that the hidden blade is just faster in terms of actually getting a strike as well as stealthier. I'm approaching from how they work in the video games. In the video games, Ezio/Altair's hidden blade can launch and retract quite fast with barely any movement needed. You can basically walk up to a person, literally touch them, stab them then sheathe the weapon almost simultaneously. Then walk away immediately after. With a dagger, you always have to unsheathe it first with your other hand. Then do the attack of your choice. Then you unsheathe (unless you want to walk around with a weapon drawn). Also as seen in the games, you can kill two people in one motion with hidden blades on both of your arms because you eliminate the need to unsheathe with the free hand. The initial movement of your hand is basically the attack itself.
@casanovafiems1508
@casanovafiems1508 Жыл бұрын
However, you need to remember that the strikes they use wouldn’t always be lethal and they would always be loud. The only place you can strike is the artillery and vein on either side of the neck. This would mean 30 seconds until that person dies so you have to hold their mouth so they can’t scream, but they still would it will just be muffled. So you wouldn’t be able to take two people out. Also if you cut the vocal cords that person can still scream.

James Loucks The reason that you they could use the hidden blade in combat actually made sense. You know you can actually fight with the hidden blade in the first game, right? Just in AC 2, it was expanded upon. The hidden blades from Ezio and onwards were equipped with metal bracers that allowed Assassin's to block attacks from weapons, the hidden blade itself doesn't block it, if you did try to block an attack with the actual blade, it would brake, Ezio broke one of his hidden blades when it was shattered by a sword in AC: Revelations. Plus, the hidden blade in combat is more about dodging attacks, then going in for the killing blow, so it's basically unnarmed combat, but with the hidden blade :P
@jamesloucks2562
@jamesloucks2562 9 жыл бұрын
Emerald Alien yeah you COULD fight with it in the first game but it wasn't as easy to kill hundreds of guards single handedly. " The hidden blades from Ezio and onwards were equipped with metal bracers that allowed Assassin's to block attacks from weapons" No, firstly you can SEE that when he is fighting he blocks with the blade, not a "bracer" on his arm. Second, how thick does a bracer have to be to be both light enough to move, large enough to safely shield your whole arm and strong enough to block heavy weapons? that's fucking bullshit. " Plus, the hidden blade in combat is more about dodging attacks, then going in for the killing blow" because its so easy to just kill someone in full armor or even half armor with a 6 inch blade awkwardly strapped to your wrist, while fighting multiple people. dude, enough excuses this is NOT a usable weapon for anything but maybe stealth, and even then ANY small dagger would be just as good if not better. its fun to kill lots of guards with neat assassins blades but its an absurd fantasy.
@jadonmiller9942

James Loucks I didn't make that up. They did equip metal bracers to block attacks. And Ezio DID break one of his in Revelations when a sword hit it. And why are you so upset by this? You're really angry at me for no reason. Who cares if it's realistic? This is the series where you can leap off of large buildings and land in haybales everytime. And you didn't really acknowlege anything I said, I said that they CAN block sword attacks, but usually they just dodge and go in for the killing blow, like unarmed combat with a hidden blade. You say that they do block with the blade itself, yet how can you possibly know that, did you pause the game and screen cap it? Just to prove a point? Whereas I know it is actually a fact that they have metal bracers to block sword attacks. Why are you so angry by this?

For the most part all your comments are sound, and I'm not disagreeing with you, but I'd like to point of a few things: 1. In the AC books they explain that hidden blades are activated by flexing the forearm to press some kind of button, so I reckon that would be a more deliberate action than pulling a string. 2. The only real advantage to a hidden blade rather than a normal blade that I can think of is speed; it can be extended and retracted in an instant, so the user can kill someone without drawing a weapon, and can conceal the blade in less time than it would take to sheath a normal knife. You can probably see why this could be advantageous if you wanted to climb up a building before anyone noticed your kill. 3. This one is a more specific use that obviously doesn't justify an entire weapon, but at one point in AC2, Ezio's arms are being held, and in order to escape he extends his hidden blades into his captors. I'm sure there are more reasons having a weapon that could be used with your arms bound would be useful.

Erudito otidurE Actually activating it with nothing but a muscle twitch in the forearm would make it even less safe, very likely to accidentally go off. The time it takes to sheath a normal knife is about 1 second or even less when you're trained.

Some of the points in this are valid, depending on the model you are talking about. Only the earliest of the blades had the issue of getting in the way of the ring finger. Anything beyond altairs time by atleast 20 to 30 years(just guesstimating) would have been modified to have a higher blade mount preventing the need for removal of the finger. And the blade would be mounted on a full bracer with glove(why do you think almost all of he assasin had some kinda glove with he bracer) to prevent sliding or misplacement of the blade. And in regards to the accidental release, only someone that wasnt meant to wield the blade would harm themselves in the use of it. An assasins arms are usualy lax, preventing the blade from releasing unless there was a malfunction which wont happen often. The blade was meant for assassinations, quick,quite, events that would take no longer than a moment. If they were to swing a knife with the same force the blade produces when released others would have noticed, and in the grand bazaars of Jerusalem there Is little chance someone will know who exactly caused the person to fall through the crowd

I see where you're coming from, but all of these problems can be fixed very easily. 1. In the games, the Assassins take the ring off when they're not using the blade. Then again, you could use a twist ring that tightens and loosens the cord, such as the one fashioned by Ammnra. Another great way is to create a rig that allows the blade to detach from the bracer. 2. As shown by Altair's codex, the mechanism in the game deploys via a scissor system, not OTF. The only spring in the whole construct is a spiral torsion spring inside the pulley. 3. Lastly, you should always make sure to wear a properly-fit bracer and fasten its straps. This can avoid the sliding issue you mentioned. Better yet, you can wear a gauntlet instead, just as Aguilar did in the Assassin's Creed movie. I hope this helps! 🙃

ah i remember this video. but now seeing it again i just realized for the resistance thing, assassins are often seen wearing gloves of some sort. not saying that this is concrete what they do, but possibly the whole blade could be connected to the glove. in that sense your hand and fingers are providing the opposite pull to counteract the stabbing resistance; especially when ur hand is flexed up or in a fist. that which also flexes ur forearm muscles, creating a tighter fit on the straps around ur arm. as for the accidental activation tho, the most common believe concepts are pulling a string or fully flexing certain forearm muscles, so itd be fairly hard to do that on accident. especially when looking at the game activation usually calls for a decent amount of flexing ur hand upwards. even if u see some irl homemade iterations(like rawice511's), the pull up is quite large for activation.

The best part of this video? All the armchair weapons "experts" trying to explain why this weapon would've totally teh worked, guys. Instead of accepting the obvious. To any such "expert", you should look up "Occam's Razor." There, you might realize why a simple, established, known, easily reproducible design is far superior to a ludicrously complicated one with a massive number of gears and moving parts, any one of which could fail at any time and render the weapon useless. Not to mention that if you're caught with it, there's no question it's meant for some a'murderin'. Daggers could be used for hunting, skinning animals, whittling wood or any other number of perfectly socially acceptable endeavors. A hidden blade? Yeah, you're gonna use that to shank somebody, period.

That is assuming it's a time/area where it would be acceptable to be carrying a dagger. A prime example would even be in the AC2 trailer, and more specifically, the carnival. It would have likely drawn a lot of attention for a non-guard to be carrying a weapon. In contrast, if it were along the road, no one would look twice. And what would be the difference in terms of intent of being caught with a hidden blade, or a knife up your sleeve? Probably none, so that would be kind of a moot point in that regard. And yes, 9 times out of 10, the simpler solution is better. But then there is still that one time where you can't just carpet bomb the area, and you need something with a bit more finesse. And it really just comes down to the design. A guy who goes by Ammnra designed one based off of a switchblade action and appears to be a quite reliable system.

To make this weapon practical I would change it to having the blade and mechanism attached to a glove with bracer. It's secured to your arm and the glove gives you something to keep the blade from sliding back, allowing for powerful thrusts. It would probably need a safety to stop it from accidently triggering. But that is ok since the weapon is used for planned surprise killings (a.k.a. assassinations). When you think you are getting in to a situation where it would be needed, you disengage the safety. You might ask. But even if it works, what's the point? Well, it's quicker than having a mechanism to eject a normal dagger into your hand. While at the same time still being less noticable. So it would be an extremly quick way of producing a weapon from (seemingly) nowhere.

Pontus Welin And when your cover is blown, what then? The blades position makes it terrible for open combat, it won't have the striking power of a dagger, requires you to be incredibly close, the blade isn't long enough to actually kill someone unless you get them in the throat, etc. Why should the speed of drawing a assassination weapon matter? If I'm stalking someone in a dark alley, I probably drew my blade some time ago as I'm following them. In a crowd it wouldn't work due the angle you have to put your hand in.

@@SophisticatedDogCat they are both blades regardless, sure Id admit that the hidden blade really shouldnt be the go-to plan for murdering someone, but you shouldnt prioritize getting the kill only with the Hidden Blade either. You have to keep in mind that the Assassins in the game used a broad arsenal and the hidden blade is actually often not really that used, if anything it was catered mostly to swords, ranged weapons like a bow, throwing knife or even like you said a dagger. Which is why the assassins (Or atleast what AC1 showed) trained so much when it came to combat. The HB seemed to be only really used when it was more convenient than using a dagger. Regardless of what I stated earlier how both are still blades, the hidden blade can easily pop out and retract, not only will it be quick and unnoticeable to pull out and conceal again, but the blade also retracts effortlessly. Depending where you stab someone of course, itll still take force and strength to pull out a blade esp if it penetrated an area where it has bone and muscle like the neck. The Hidden blades strength on popping out and retracting is proven when Bayek accidentally loses the entirety of his finger to his hidden blade, proving how quick and effortlessly it can be unlike manually stabbing someone with a knife. You also have to remember the hidden blade was mostly used in the 11th-17th century, even earlier times like the 400s if we include the recent games like Valhalla, how would people back then be able to recognize what your 'massive death machine' is? People wore a lot of whacky stuff back then and wearing armor everywhere was the norm. Bracers are the least that attracts attention

Altair - the original user - had his 4th finger removed, so that he could use this whole contraption with closed fist. There was also metal finger guard around the blade so he wouldn't cut neighboring fingers. Using it this way makes a lot more sense to me. More control, more accuracy and this way he can actually do both: cut and thrust.

What your not seeming to grasp is how instantly this weapon may go from concealed, to use able, then back to concealed. You could be within the distance of just patting a mans cheek in a friendly gesture, and they would have no idea there was a blade on your arm, that could kill them, within under a second. It is far more concealable than any dagger you've described, and if made properly, would be very sturdy. The ring could be placed on the finger so that only a movement that is very difficult, (stretching your hand as open And as far back as it can go) would initiate the mechanism via hair trigger Release. It is in no question, the most concealable a knife can be, and that is why it is more practical in real life. The abillity to make the kill, not get away without people knowing you did it. And no,I am not some fanboy desperately clinging to my favorite games. I've played about half of 2 and a quarter of 1. This is just an efficient weaopon that frees your hands for anything else. Well no the person is not instantly dead. (Unless you were to say, puncture a point into the skull or from under, into it.) They have their little moment to bleed out, say 2min until death, but aside from somehow stopping the bleeding, that person is dead. And yeah, blood could get into it, but if your smart about it, you make the stab quick, wipe off the blade, then retract it.

dalton jones no even stabbing someone in the head doesn't kill. you only incapacitate them until either enough blood has been lost or they went into shock or swelling builds up in the brain. with medical attention they could save him. even in the time periods you see in the games. you hear or see the guy that got shot in the head and lost half or most of one side of his brain. he survived a gun shot to the head which is amazing. he wasn't the same but he is alive.

I think the main advantage of the hidden blade was it's "surprise factor", I mean you don't exactly expect an oponent with empty hands to suddenly draw a blade right out of his sleave. And also that you operate it with just one hand with a flick of the wrist. Though as much as I enjoyed using the twin hidden blades in the game I seriously doubt you could use them against a sword in real life.

That's a bit more likely to be actually useful. It's loud, and people would be bewildered... You'd have be at really close range, but... If you could be in a large crowd? Far more likely to work without problem. Over the range that Ezio and the rest use it, though? Pfft, fuck no. Those things were so damnably inaccurate back then. They didn't have rifling and the like. So, it wouldn't work, in that regard. But, at anywhere between 1 to maybe 2 meters? Probably would work. Probably. No promises.

I always thought the hidden blades would have made a lot more sense as a thin, pointed steel spike instead of an actual dagger blade. Basically like more of a hidden rapier than dagger. Mind if I add something? yes, i plentifully agree with Skallagrim here on this since for an an actual hidden knife is on different than a hidden balde, plus, it is much quicker. but .... it does have its benefits. the weapon itself is practically meant to conceal it as much as possible. think about it. think of a VIP in the middle of a crowd or an important event in a large hall with the media and cameras, and you see someone pulling up a side of his jacket, making the maneuver as if he is about to reach something in his jacket pocket. what is the first thing that comes to your mind? you probably think he is reaching for his knife, his gun, any weapon. does not matter if you are seeing him from the front, side or back, you will instantly think he is going to pull out something dangerous. now think of how the assassins wield the blade, by just flicking the wrist or finger. think of when you see someone flicking his wrist and forget how questionable the mechanism is or if you see you do see a blade in his hand (cause obviously, the blade is like the size of a dagger, of course it can be seen) think you do think when you see someone flicking his wrist, if you do see it anyway? probably someone re-arranging his watch or relaxing the muscle of his hand (maybe because it got tired?) or maybe a twitch feeling like as if the guy is anxious because he is about to meet someone important? whatever it is, that manner looks very harmless compared to the other tactic. (and it can be easily hidden, like when you place your fists together to your crotch like a gentleman, or under the table when you sitting down) but ... it has its flaws. not only you are wearing a hoodie (obviously), which certainly draws suspicion, but this tactic is very outdated. sure, it is more concealed than just drawing a gun in the middle of the crowd, but the technology has changed. in a firefight between a knife vs a gun ... who will win? never bring a knife to a gunfight. plus, dont you think it is better to use a sniper instead? a long-range shot where NOBODY will see it coming? plus, not only a stab will probably draw out a lot of blood, so it is not as concealed as we thought, (it is better to use something more stealthy like a poison to make it look like it was done by a heart attack), but if you see someone holding on to their chest with blood coming out of his shirt, they will probably look at the guy who was VERY close to him, cause of course, they will quickly deduct it was an assassination by something pointy, where they have found out about this during when the guy is slowly dying in public or after the autopsy report and the playback from the camera feed or if someone holding a videocamera saw it. it has its pros but unfortunately, times has changed and technology has changed so this tactic looks outdated I am surprised that the Assassins, according to the series, survived this long, by using stabs of a hidden blade where technology like snipers and drones are being used, MUCH more beneficial, when they could easily use better concealed tactics for espionage like poisons or something to make it look like an assassin like Agent 47 does in the Hitman series That might have worked in the past but since forensic science can find it instantly and messages spread much faster now and assassinations and deaths are not as common or as open as it was in different eras like the mediaval era were seeing a dead body out on the street was like another Tuesday for everyone, but today, history has changed and tactics had to change too

If it can be engineered correctly it can work. Nobody actually made one that actually works how it's supposed to. For practicality the reason the weapon is very dangerous is because of the fact no one would know your wearing it. And it can be you secondary means of attack if u have a sword in the other. Let's say you have a sword and your bracer/hidden blade. And we engage in a fight we sword lock and I managed to seemingly punch you but In actually it's a lethal stab to the stomach face or chest. The weapon gives a huge element of surprise. So it's practical to me. Just need to be made by a genius to get the mechanics right.

Well unless you're good at controlling the kickback force to provide more lethal approach and precision for the death to be instant then you're good to go. But since you said you were in a sword fight first then apparently you decided to just punch him with your hidden blade...are you sure you can handle and provide the enough force needed to give a deadly blow? I'm pretty sure you just used like 3/4 of your energy by then. So...I don't think so. Well unless your Bruce Lee then, yeah. It's maybe cool and working but it is undeniably IMPRACTICAL.

Failed physics? haha wanna see my grades bro? it'll make you cry and by the way it is not practical bec not everyone can use it. And when a non-trained civillian get in line with trouble, are you sure he/she is gonna go for the neck? are you serious? haha And if you want physics then I'll give you one, the knife and the hand will have the same motion as long as it is secured in your hand but it can never have the same force. Remember the knife is 'strapped', it doesn't have the direct force transferred like the knife being held in continuous linear pattern since your knife is in parallel form and thus the force executed by the arm should be more for the knife to acquire the required force, since its the one making contact, to execute a damaging effect for you to have time to run. And if you can't execute that properly, then you're dead meat. How bout dat 'teacher'?

I see two utilities of it : avoiding to lose the dagger and unexpectedly hitting in a fight (so the opponent wouldn't expect that you pull a dagger so fastly). Instead of complicating things by putting a safety, it'd be enough just removing the ring to another finger where it can't accidentally activate the system. Also I think it's better to stab horizontally (like cutting a throat) instead of stabbing frontly

+Raccoon The ideas for some of them are good, but in a lot of cases, the mechanisms wouldn't have enough strength to hold themselves together. Often times there just isn't enough actually holding the weapons together to make them work very well. If that were improved and the designs made more solid, then yes, they would work. Although, in some cases, there really wouldn't be a way to make them work without changing them at the fundamental level. Obviously Logarius' Wheel beats everything, though. Wheels are OP.
