Hattori Hanzõ was a genius! Shinsengumi also had ninjas as allies. It's what helped them get intell of crimes and movements. The fact they did not use Shinsengumi that has a history worthy of a 52-episode live series and countless movies is such a waste. I would have bought my first Assassin Creed game if I could play as Hijikata-san or Okita-san! It would have been such a great story, too, playing as the last samurais as they try to keep the westerners out of Japan. Japanese history is a gold mine, and they couldn't even read one book... just a Wikipedia page...

Based on the leaked original story for Shadows, the main character "Taka" was supposed to be Hattori Hanzo (the 2nd). It's THE guy outright known for being a historical samurai while also known fictionally for being a ninja clan leader. They wanted their black samurai so bad they had to make it "impossible" to mix "both fantasies of ninja and samurai" together.

The difference between Samurais and Ninja's only having distinct roles as Samurais were seen as a formal warrior class and ninjas being only for the lower classes like peasants or farmers who are trained with specialized operatives. Samurais can be Ninja's but Ninja's cannot be Samurais as they have different social statuses Also the fact that Samurais do indeed in fact not use katanas to fight and they'd rather use it as a secondary weapon but in the later periods katana became a status symbol of Samurais because it says you're a part of the Samurai class. Real japanese samurais would prefer to use weapons such as bows or spears cause samurais usually fight on horseback (originally) but as guns came along they increasingly became used to using it along with spears formations during battles but in the Edo period this is where katanas became weapons because of times of peace all u really need is a sword to scare pedestrians Lastly Yasuke wasn't even a Samurai he was a retainer likely a body guard for Nobunaga and when he died Yosuke was taken away by the Jesuits and was never heard from again. The first act ends with you assassinating your own lord before he can give an order to do something heinous, like wipe out a portion of the village or burn the orphanage. Next, you’re caught and imprisoned. Trapped in a jail and set to be executed, you are resigned to your fate knowing you saved Tanako, the blacksmith’s boy who was going to die in the culling you thwarted (who we would have been shown a connection to during the first act - the blacksmith would act as our Alfred/the guy who makes our tools and hidden blade - like DaVinci in AC2. Suddenly, a voice calls to you from the window, and you meet an Assassin. He praises you for your work, and explains that your lord was a Templar, and a truly evil man. He invites you to come with him, and with that, the 2nd act starts and we begin training with the Assassin’s Brotherhood, Japan sect - black assassin’s robe, stylized more like a shinobi’s garb, of course we have hidden blades, shuriken, kunai, caltrops, sleep/poison/frenzy darts, etc. The rest writes itself. Genuinely, these people don’t put any effort in.

I would just like to remind everyone that 10 years ago when fans were begging them to do a Chinese ninja game (not Japanese samurai) because they set a Chinese assassin up perfectly with ezios death. They replied by saying “it would be to generic and boring, we can do better”. Oh how the tables turned after Tsushima. Rise of the Ronin was such an underrated gem that got trashed on by reviewers complaining about the graphics and other things that shouldn’t determine how good a game will be. Glad it’s finally getting some recognition! Edit: Also I understand nowadays that paying $70 dollars for a game is very pricey and the least you can have is good graphics. However, graphics are and always have been, just the cherry on top. Most people I’d say… don’t play games for the visuals unless there’s a game with heavy emphasis on it. ROTR is a game that was also originally developed on older hardware, so if they wanted to update the visuals to today’s standards, it’d probably have to be scrapped and probably would’ve had to restart from the ground up.

​@@MightandLight in Valhalla the canon version was even more stupid, because the 'canon experience' that was a mode you could choose in the game would have you play as female Eivor most of the game, but genderswap to male in the Norse mythology segments. So Kassandra is the canon protagonist because she's descendant of a female god... but female Eivor is still canon even though the character is a reincarnation of a male god (gonna avoid spoilers here, but it's so obvious which god it is that everyone's first guess will be correct). these are some incredible mental gymnastics to justify making female assassins canon in the new games. Meanwhile they could have just said that Kassandra is canon because her voice actress did a great job while Alexios' voice actor made him incredibly boring while being essentially the same character. That's it. Everyone would accept that without any problem. But they just had to justify it with made up lore reasons just to ignore the rule they set up themselves in the next game when it stopped suiting their agenda.

@@samuraidoggy AC3 has very hard chases that you really _had_ to run from, some of the biggest ships in Black Flag were definitely challenging even when maxed out, and Unity had a genuinely pretty difficult combat system (although the guns _are_ buggy and bullshit) I haven't played anything more recent, but Ubi _has_ had a decent amount of challenge occasionally. It's really only the beloved Ezio trilogy that was too easy for its own good.

The whole idea of Yasuke historically being a badass samurai warrior is ridiculous. I hate to break this to anyone out there but Yasuke was relegated as nothing more than a party treat to WOW his guests with. Considering Assassin’s Creed has basically been centered around Naoe’s play style since the beginning, it really doesn’t make sense to have someone like Yasuke playable. It’s even been said that playing as Yasuke, half the game is taken from you because of the heavy reliance on parkour that only Naoe can do; Yasuke’s really only there for fighting and piss poor fighting at that.

While peasants did technically serve as Shinobi, it was almost always in a supporting role, creating distractions, blending into the populace, providing information.

that's big mistake, even me, a chinese know that ninjas in Japan all live in some kind of small village away from any city. for what? to hide themself, to avoid to be target of their enemies. you know what? those ninjas hired by many daimyos to carry out some underhanded operations. so they almost have many enemies, especially other ninjas in other villages hired by enemy daimyos. for example, the Iga Ninja and the Koga Ninja were enemies because they hired by fixed different faction daimyos. so, they are NOT Japanese nobles, the Japanese emperor never granted them noble status, and because of the sensitivity of their status, no daimyo granted them noble status. ninjas have always been mysterious and cannot be exposed. there have been cases in Japan where some ninja villages were discovered by the enemy daimyo's army and then destroyed, which is why they had to live in seclusion. some smaller ninja villages simply cannot find regular employers, so they are similar to modern mercenaries, with their allegiance to masters changing frequently, making them even less suitable for living in the sun.

Most assassins in feudal Japan WERE samurai wearing masks, doing unsavory tasks for their lords. The idea that you can't combine the two fantasies is beyond false. It's often said ninja or Shinobi never officially existed in the first place. Because the idea that rice farmers had the time or calories to be doing secret ninja clan activities without ANY oversight by a ruler is verifiably ridiculous. saying that ninja and samurai were two different social classes, when ninja didn't actually exist as a social class. Is flat out untrue at a minimum.

Aikido was basically made in around 14th century to train Samurai in art of combat against armed opponent (potentially assassin) with bare hands or Wakizashi. It was efficient so it was also even more deeply implemented and adapted by said assassins as the best method to assassinate someone was either poison or being able to eliminate them with bare hands. In both cases due to any officials being disarmed in presence of lords. So yeah... Samurai being adept in Shinobi like hand to hand combat is not only historically accurate but kinda requirement. Reason why one was not doing it while in full armor and armament is due to it being inferior and inefficient compared to just using armor and weapons to own advantage. But without said armor and weapons they would be able to use 'Shinobi moves' to quite adept degree. Ubisoft had basically NO KNOWLEDGE. Not even surface level.

The fact that the blueprint for this game was already established 5 years ago makes this collapse all the more incredible. Ghost did everything better and Sucker Punch endeared themselves to the Japanese so much that they were made official and permanent ambassadors of Tsushima.
