to answer your question: if the target is not in the direction/path of the beacon then motion is allowed but if the target IS in range and in the forced direction motion is not allowed.

I once lost to a gorgeous Vulcan "retreat" beacon that suckered me into aggro positioning my steel balls only for them to never get a lengthy lock on as they burned down

From my understanding it is segment-wise. So if there is an enemy unit in the current segment of the beacon, the unit will stop when attacking regardless the target and only continue to run-and-gun when the segment is clear of enemies. That's why the length of the segments matter

thank you man for casting this replay)) I tried this strategy more times after that one, it actually works pretty consistently if you have enough speed and can obtain good amount of resources early when you get the lead by score you also can go straight into some kind of experimental units to get even more resources
