The skateboard I 3d printed using recycled PET filament. The skateboard would be supported by two smooth rods, a threaded rod would hold together the middle parts, and the trucks would attach and keep it all together. Would it withstand me? Or, how about my 9 year old son?

On Penny boards they're made of a grippy silicone like material with no actual sand paper. Maybe either a dual extrusion or separately printing the top out of a rubber-like flexible material? Also, adding some sort of interlocking system would probably add just enough strength to really make it last.

Using aluminum angle iron between the trucks likely would’ve made it so an adult could stand on it. It was a trick used by a DH longboarder to get added stiffness

The black "pads" are called risers. :D You need to fortify it better and send it out to me here in L.A. and I'll test the next version at a skate park here. Also, yes, all boards should have some grip tape on it. Dope that someone printed a board! I'd love to try it out. You definitely wouldn't need to wax any crubs or anything before sliding on them. I hope they do a modern street deck design, that would be fun af.

Very cool! You should try printing some wheels for it too I've been experimenting with some 2 part printed wheels: Pla hubs and TPU tires they seem to hold up quite well. I might put up a video with my results in a few days

Can you print a one piece complete deck on you biggest printer, maybe corner to corner across the bed? That should increase the strength nicely. And, yeah, YOU need to ride your creation Joel! Using your kids as guinea pigs. What ever next? Ah, wait, do you have them insured? Hmmm,

Honestly, I don't think that this design will ever perform well as-is. That threaded rod is really soft and is only "designed" to support a load in one direction - along it's axis. As your son found out, if it's subjected to a bending load, it's done. All of those threads that are rolled into it act as stress risers and concentrate all of the stress at those little valleys. Another danger is: as the board is ridden, that threaded rod could fatigue and harden and then break, which would cause the board to come apart. No way is the remaining rod keeping that thing together. Some ideas: use steel bar for the inserts. Maybe aluminum, but even that is pretty iffy. You could also print some ribs or flanges into the bottom of the deck so that the steel rods run through the middle, and the segments are held together with the flanges. Most of the bending load would be taken up by the steel rods, and the flanges with nut/bolt pairs (with washers) could keep the segments from pulling apart. Maybe another cool aesthetic cool be to make the skateboard segments mate via a edges that were a few dovetail joints? Snap them together, push the steel rods through, and then put small bolt/nut combos in the flanges on the underside?
@boomerangfreak
@boomerangfreak 6 жыл бұрын
All good ideas yes though I can't help but wonder how this design would perform if it were to be designed to use profiled tubes like triangle or square shaped. Using that in carbon fiber tubes that are bit bigger than what they seem to be now, I do think this would then be a very usable cruiser board. But ofc a total redesign would most likely offer the best solution even though I still have my doubts this would ever become common practice as well wooden boards, let's just say there is a reason they are so widely used.

@toastrecon
@toastrecon 6 жыл бұрын
Lots better than the threaded rod. I might also look into the steel bar that you can get at Home Depot. I would say that you could also look into carbon fiber tube that you can find online. A lot more stiff, really light, and could be glued in with epoxy?

That is true, but it still is a decent engineering material (as seen in many aerospace applications). Catastrophic failure, in my opinion, is more important of a consideration where you're pretty sure there will be severe impacts or shocks. Think of car body panels where you want them to be able to deform without shattering because you want them to absorb the crash impact. Maybe in the form of a fuel tank on a car where you'd rather it dent than crack and then leak. In this case, if you were to use correctly-sized CF tubes for the interior structural spars, I'd think that the chances of them being more prone to breakage than steel or threaded rod would actually be pretty low. They wouldn't be exposed to rock chips or sliding on rails where the CF could be damaged or abraded, and if the board were shocked with enough force to break the CF, chances are that the rider is hurt anyway and the plastic parts are toast.
@paulvo7818
@paulvo7818 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Joel, try separating the board into 3 parts to avoid the joint right in the center of the board. The bending moment and therefore strain is highest in the center and that shouldn't be the location for weak points. Engineers know that as 3 point bend. Good luck!

It needs some type of interlocking at the joins. Print both faces flat and use butterfly patches or keys glued into the bottom side. That cheap smooth rod is too soft. It needs hardened steel rod, like is used for 3D printer rails. Can't cut that with bolt cutters!

I have to disagree with your blanket statement of "goodness", Jason: my teenage son has turned out _way_ better than he ever should have given that he's got me and my wife for parents, so for all we know David might be a great kid merely due to genetics rather than parenting. XD
@jasonbaker541
@jasonbaker541 6 жыл бұрын
Well I was considering making some clever statement that Joel loaded great filament into his wife's extruder and made a great print, but was not sure how that would be received. Nature/Nurture is an age old argument, but parenting can have a definite impact on your child's perspective and behavior, but yes you are correct, there is a chance it was just genetics, which by the way came from the parents also so either way Joel is a good Dad, genetically or sociologically.

my 2 bobs worth as i dare say the redesign of the skateboard has no dout been hashed rehashed and then one more time because he was getting into the job!. So all i have to say is when you want strength along a board be it surf,skate,or ironing? (hey I like to push hard on my collars lol....you Need lateral stringers eg: stiff flat say 3/4 " wide or 20 mm Steel - Carbon Fiber - Hard Timber or any other material thats quite light and resisits bending ,then put on it's side it will give incredible lateral strength even 3mm aluminium will be strong enough to take your weight Mr Joel Print or make slot's down the boards length so they fit into them snug and Epoxy the crap out of them :-).....That'll dooittt Yehhh. cheers from Australia Joel .... P.S. Love those HUGE printers (actualy I love all 3d printers theyre cool tool Yeh! Your doing a fantastic job there 3DPN looking forward to lots more fun in the printing Sun.....Cheers

Hey Joel, wouldn't you want some kind of underside ribs to help hold the torsion a bit better? Maybe using the rest of the smooth rods you chopped off would help? Like this: static1.nordic.pictures/4150810-thickbox_default/plastic-skateboard-28-flipgrip-board-nijdam.jpg
@jjvansly
@jjvansly 6 жыл бұрын
Cool project. The bending issue is because the rods are on the neutral axis for bending and round rods don't have a very high moment of intertia, which affects bending. The plastic parts did not help because they were not glued together. Gluing the parts together would help, but is probably not enough by itself because half of the plastic joint will be in tension and the other half in compression, and I don't know how well the plastic joints will handle the tension. Taking shorter rods or metal plates and gluing them to the bottom of the skate board between the tracks will help stiffen up the board also by shifting the neutral axis down and putting most of the plastic joint in compression.

Maybe use a pair of door hinges in the middle or put C beam down the middle of the bottom? The door hinges will probably be cheaper, but less useful. The C beam would make it really strong if the wheel mounts are attached to it. That would make the 3D printed part just a platform on a nice sturdy base.

Very interesting idea, especially considering I weigh quite a bit more than my son :)

Joel (referring to how solid the first set of trucks attached): Thats not going anywhere me (only 1/2 paying attention): No of course its not, you still need to attach the other 2 wheels first... oh...

Dang David! Nice work! That's great you finally got the chance to put the board together. Have you considered sending a 3D printed bored to the people of Braille skateboarding? They do a great torture test! They have even skated on 3D printed wheels!

glad you guys gave it a shot and were both very positive with it. While the obvious bracing would be to add 90 degree angle strips underneath in the model for strength and reprint. But maybe a more practical approach is to make the board like most boards are made: in layers. print the board thinner a few times and sandwich glue them together?
